A Spectrum Of Experience: A Community Art Project To Build Empathy Through Identity Sharing In A Suburban High School, Allison Stansfield Apr 2018

A Spectrum Of Experience: A Community Art Project To Build Empathy Through Identity Sharing In A Suburban High School, Allison Stansfield

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Having empathy for others is an important aspect of living within a healthy community. However, teaching empathy can be difficult. High school is a natural setting for learning and developing many social skills. If adolescents can learn to develop empathy at this age, they can carry it with them into their future communities. Research shows that story-telling and shared experiences have the potential to foster empathy. This paper describes a community-based art project within a suburban high school that was designed to use personal narrative and art-making as a way of developing a sense of empathy in adolescent-aged students. Students …

Correcting For The Inconveniences Of Cultivation: Foraging As A Food Source In Southwestern Burkina Faso, Julia Deryn Morgan Apr 2018

Correcting For The Inconveniences Of Cultivation: Foraging As A Food Source In Southwestern Burkina Faso, Julia Deryn Morgan

Geography Honors Projects

Malnutrition is an important public health issue in Burkina Faso where 30 % of children are underweight for their age and 92% suffer from iron deficiency. Such statistics indicate that there is a significant lack of adequate nutrition in the country. With approximately 80% of the population employed in the agricultural sector, development projects have focused on increasing agricultural production and commercializing output to ameliorate poor nutrition. However, this strategy ignores the importance of local knowledge and food traditions, most notably by neglecting to acknowledge foraging as a significant source of food. To address this concern, I seek to understand …

Histones are an important aspect in human cells because they play a role in gene regulation. Histones package DNA into structural units, where DNA wraps around the histones form nucleosomes. Histone acetylation is important in human cells because these modifications open up chromatin to allow for gene expression. Bromodomains are protein domains that can recognize and bind to histone acetylation. Bromodomains play a significant role in gene transcription and the regulation of chromatin. BRD3 is a gene that contains two bromodomains and recognizes/binds to acetylated chromatin. BRD3 is mutated in some cancers, though many bromodomain mutations have not been investigated. …

Oncoplastic Surgery: Is It Time To Change? From Innovation To Adoption Using Mentorship Program, Eman Khayat Apr 2018

Oncoplastic Surgery: Is It Time To Change? From Innovation To Adoption Using Mentorship Program, Eman Khayat

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Oncoplastic surgery is considered the standard of care for breast cancer therapy in numerous Western World countries, particularly in Europe. Despite the advancement of knowledge, Canada still lags in adoption of oncoplasty into the standard surgical practice. In our study, a mentorship program was used to introduce oncoplastic surgery to practicing breast surgeons at LHSC. The change in perception and adoption of oncoplastic surgery were evaluated using semi-structured interviews, before and after the intervention, by qualitative thematic analysis method. Mentorship program was validated as a superior method of learning new surgical techniques by practicing surgeons, demonstrating acceptance of different levels …

Increased Mitochondrial Calpain-1 Is An Important Mechanism Contributing To Mitochondrial Ros Generation In Cardiac Diseases, Rui Ni Apr 2018

Increased Mitochondrial Calpain-1 Is An Important Mechanism Contributing To Mitochondrial Ros Generation In Cardiac Diseases, Rui Ni

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Both calpain activation and excessive mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiac diseases. We investigated whether and how calpain regulates mtROS generation in mediating cardiac diseases.

In mouse models of streptozotocin-induced type-1 diabetes and lipopolysaccharides- induced sepsis, we show that the protein levels of calpain-1 and calpain activities in mitochondria were significantly elevated in diabetic and septic hearts. The elevation of mitochondrial calpain-1 correlated with an increase in mtROS generation and oxidative damage. Importantly, cardiomyocyte-specific deletion of capns1 disrupted calpain-1 and calpain-2 in the heart and prevented mtROS generation in both septic and diabetic …

Where Trying To Conceive Becomes A Community Effort: A Digital Ethnography Of Online Infertility Forums, Megan Burns Apr 2018

Where Trying To Conceive Becomes A Community Effort: A Digital Ethnography Of Online Infertility Forums, Megan Burns

Sociology Honors Papers

Online forums for women using in vitro fertilization (IVF), or similar assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), provide a useful setting to further evaluate and understand women’s expectations of motherhood, the relationship infertile women have with physicians and biomedicine, and their interactions on the forums. Some critics of ARTs consider them a tool of oppression in a pronatalist state. The pressure and desire to become a biological mother leads the women with access to these technologies to use them regardless. Through digital ethnographic research on four online ART forums, this research examines the intersection of altruism and self-interest in the ways forum-users …

Evaluation Of A Novel Finite Element Model Of Active Contraction In The Heart, Xiaoyan Zhang, Zhan-Qiu Liu, Kenneth S. Campbell, Jonathan F. Wenk Apr 2018

Evaluation Of A Novel Finite Element Model Of Active Contraction In The Heart, Xiaoyan Zhang, Zhan-Qiu Liu, Kenneth S. Campbell, Jonathan F. Wenk

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Finite element (FE) modeling is becoming a widely used approach for the investigation of global heart function. In the present study, a novel model of cellular-level systolic contraction, which includes both length- and velocity-dependence, was implemented into a 3D non-linear FE code. To validate this new FE implementation, an optimization procedure was used to determine the contractile parameters, associated with sarcomeric function, by comparing FE-predicted pressure and strain to experimental measures collected with magnetic resonance imaging and catheterization in the ventricles of five healthy rats. The pressure-volume relationship generated by the FE models matched well with the experimental data. Additionally, …

Procedural Competency Training During Diagnostic Radiology Residency: Time To Go Beyond “See One, Do One, Teach One”!, Driss Raissi, Qiong Han, Michael A. Winkler, Edward J. Escott

Radiology Faculty Publications

Objectives: Achieving procedural competency during diagnostic radiology residency can impact the radiologist's future independent practice after graduation, especially in a private practice setting. However, standardized procedure competency training within most radiology residency programs is lacking, and overall procedural skills are still mainly acquired by the traditional “see one, do one, teach one” methodology. We report the development of a simple standardized procedural training protocol that can easily be adopted by residency programs currently lacking any form of structured procedural training.

Materials and Methods: An ad hoc resident procedural competency committee was created in our radiology residency program. A procedural certification …

Genomic Dna Methylation-Derived Algorithm Enables Accurate Detection Of Malignant Prostate Tissues, Erfan Aref-Eshghi, Laila C Schenkel, Peter Ainsworth, Hanxin Lin, David I Rodenhiser, Jean-Claude Cutz, Bekim Sadikovic

Paediatrics Publications

Introduction

The current methodology involving diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa) relies on the pathology examination of prostate needle biopsies, a method with high false negative rates partly due to temporospatial, molecular, and morphological heterogeneity of prostate adenocarcinoma. It is postulated that molecular markers have a potential to assign diagnosis to a considerable portion of undetected prostate tumors. This study examines the genome-wide DNA methylation changes in PCa in search of genomic markers for the development of a diagnostic algorithm for PCa screening.

Methods

Archival PCa and normal tissues were assessed using genomic DNA methylation arrays. Differentially methylated sites and regions …

The first tenet of medicine, "primum non nocere" or "first, do no harm", is not always compatible with oncological interventions e.g., chemotherapy, targeted therapy and radiation, since they commonly result in significant toxicities. One of the more frequent and serious treatment-induced toxicities is mucositis and particularly oral mucositis (OM) described as inflammation, atrophy and breakdown of the mucosa or lining of the oral cavity. The sequelae of oral mucositis (OM), which include pain, odynodysphagia, dysgeusia, decreased oral intake and systemic infection, frequently require treatment delays, interruptions and discontinuations that not only negatively impact quality of life but also tumor control …

Faculty Research 2018

Molecular profiling of urothelial cancers for therapeutic and prognostic potential has been very limited due to the absence of cancer-specific targeted therapies. We describe here 2 clinical cases with a histological diagnosis of an invasive sarcomatoid and a poorly differentiated carcinoma favoring urothelial with some neuroendocrine differentiation, two of the rarer types of urothelial cancers, which were evaluated for mutations in 212 genes for single-nucleotide variants and copy-number variants and 53 genes for fusions associated with solid tumors. In both cases, we identified variants in 2 genes, Case Rep Oncol 2018 Mar 27; 11(1):196-205.

Lagged Influence Of Fine Particulate Matter And Geographic Disparities On Clinic Visits For Children’S Asthma In Taiwan, Lung-Chang Chien, Yu-An Chen, Hwa-Lung Yu

Public Health Faculty Publications

Recent studies have revealed the influence of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on increased medication use, hospital admission, and emergency room visits for asthma attack in children, but the lagged influence of PM2.5 on children’s asthma and geographic disparities of children’s asthma have rarely been discussed simultaneously. This study investigated the documented diagnosis of children’s asthma in clinic visits for children aged less than 15 years old that were associated with PM2.5 in two counties located in west-central Taiwan during 2005–2010. The result shows that PM2.5 had a significant lagged effect on children’s asthma for up to 6 days. A significantly …

Quantifying Nitric Oxide Production In Platelets Using A Griess Reagent System, Chelsea Shultis Apr 2018

Quantifying Nitric Oxide Production In Platelets Using A Griess Reagent System, Chelsea Shultis

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that regulates many physiological processes in the human body. Common examples of processes that NO is involved in range from immune responses to the regulation of blood pressure. In intact blood vessels, nitric oxide is constitutively released by vascular endothelial cells in order to prevent platelet adhesion and clot formation. Platelets have also been shown to release small amounts of NO as they aggregate on damaged blood vessels. Platelet-derived NO is hypothesized to play an important role in limiting the extent of clot formation. Although platelets produce nitric oxide during aggregation, it is …

Altruism, Scepticism, And Collective Decision-Making In Foreign-Born U.S. Residents In A Tuberculosis Vaccine Trial, Sienna R. Craig, Timothy Lahey, Apoorva Dixit, C. Fordham Von Reyn

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

The current vaccine against tuberculosis, BCG, is effective when given in most TB-endemic countries at birth but has diminished efficacy against pulmonary TB after 15–20 years. As a result, new booster vaccines for adolescents and adults are being developed to realize the World Health Organization target of global elimination of TB by 2035. Multiple TB candidates thus are in active clinical development.

Methods:

One of these, DAR-901, is advancing in human clinical trials. These clinical trials are conducted in BCG immunized adults with and without HIV infection in order to assess safety and efficacy among the people most in …
