Sociocultural And Socioeconomic Determinants Of Organ Donation, Amy Gagliano Jul 2020

Sociocultural And Socioeconomic Determinants Of Organ Donation, Amy Gagliano

Posters@Research Events

Recent research has indicated that community-level characteristics are predictive of donor designation in a given region. This current study extends the body of this work to consider the potential impact of regional level sociocultural and socioeconomic determinants of health on measures of Organ Procurement Organizations’ (OPOs) success at facilitating organ transplants. Using select indicators from The National County Health Rankings dataset, county-level indicators were aggregated to provide estimates of health within each of the 57 national OPOs donation areas. Significant associations were documented.

Workplace Bullying, Emotional Abuse And Harrassment In Fire Departments, John C. Griffith, Donna L. Roberts

John Griffith

Firefighters are heroes who save lives and protect property. They are highly revered in societies all around the world and perform under the most stressful of conditions. Drawing on literature from the United States (USA), this chapter reviews the culture, demographics and changing mission of the fire service as a backdrop to workplace harassment and bullying issues. The fire service has unique organizational dynamics that can lead to harassment and bullying and, at the same time, are the critical reasons for working to eliminate intentional and unintentional unfair treatment of women and minorities. Recent literature and studies show that the ...

The Relationship Of Age, Ethnicity, Parity, And Awareness Of The Midwife’S Role In Selection Of Pregnancy Care Provider In Childbearing Age Women, Marquida Morgan

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Birthing centers inside hospitals may offer women the choice of a pregnancy care provider. Mothers can choose either a physician or a midwife. The rise of birthing centers is parallel to the rise in the demand for midwives. It is essential for the continuous growth of midwives to examine the maternal selection process of pregnancy care providers.

Objectives: The object of the descriptive survey study was examining age, ethnicity, parity, and the awareness of the midwife’s role influence on a woman’s selection of pregnancy care provider. This information would provide midwives with a framework to understand ...

Reducing Benzodiazepine Use For The Treatment Of Insomnia And Supporting Nonpharmacological Therapies, Unchan Pyon Jan 2019

Reducing Benzodiazepine Use For The Treatment Of Insomnia And Supporting Nonpharmacological Therapies, Unchan Pyon

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Most medical organizations recommend against the use of benzodiazepine use for the treatment of insomnia, especially in the elderly. However, the percentage of the adult population on benzos increase with age: 7.5% in adults ages 51-64; 9% in adults over 65. Alternative therapies for insomnia, including online CBT, require more commitment than taking a medication so many patients opt for medication. This project aims to increase awareness of benzodiazepine use for insomnia and provide support for nonpharmacological therapies.

Comparison Of Emla And Diclofenac On Reduction Of Pain And Phlebitis Caused By Peripheral Iv Catheter: A Randomized-Controlled Trial Study, Faezeh Babaieasl, Hossein Y. Yarandi, Seyedehtanaz Saeidzadeh, Motahareh Kheradmand

Nursing Faculty Research Publications

Peripheral venous catheters (PVC) are often used to provide hydration, medications, and blood products when the length of therapy is expected to be less that one week. Pain and phlebitis are frequent complications of PVC. Diclofenac and EMLA have been used to minimize these adverse effects, however, conflicting results have been reported regarding which has better outcomes. This double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of EMLA and Diclofenac (TDP) in attenuating PVC pain and phlebitis. The inpatient setting was chosen because of the higher frequency of PVC insertions, allowing for a sufficient sample size. One hundred ...

A Latent Spatial Piecewise Exponential Model For Interval-Censored Disease Surveillance Data With Time-Varying Covariates And Misclassification, Yaxuan Sun, Chong Wang, William Q. Meeker, Max Morris, Marisa L. Rotolo, Jeffery Zimmerman Jan 2019

A Latent Spatial Piecewise Exponential Model For Interval-Censored Disease Surveillance Data With Time-Varying Covariates And Misclassification, Yaxuan Sun, Chong Wang, William Q. Meeker, Max Morris, Marisa L. Rotolo, Jeffery Zimmerman

Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Publications

Understanding the dynamics of disease spread is critical to achieving effective animal disease surveillance. A major challenge in modeling disease spread is the fact that the true disease status cannot be known with certainty due to the imperfect diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the tests used to generate the disease surveillance data. Other challenges in modeling such data include interval censoring, relating disease spread to distance between units, and incorporating time-varying covariates, which are the unobserved disease statuses. We propose a latent spatial piecewise exponential model (PEX) with misclassification of events to address the challenges in modeling such disease surveillance ...

Level Of Satisfaction Among Food Pantry Clients, Staff/Volunteers, And Directors And Its Association With Client Choice In Food Pantry Layouts, Myranda Dunmire Jan 2019

Level Of Satisfaction Among Food Pantry Clients, Staff/Volunteers, And Directors And Its Association With Client Choice In Food Pantry Layouts, Myranda Dunmire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Objectives: Food insecurity is an issue in rural communities, particularly among food pantry clients. Food pantries may not provide clients with the opportunity to choose their own foods (client choice), and instead may just give a set amount and type of foods. Client choice is important in regards to client health status as well as perceptions of autonomy and quality of life. Although client choice can be promoted in food pantries, it may be difficult to grasp the process of food pantry transitioning and how well changes such as these may be perceived by clients or food pantry personnel. We ...

Referral Patterns And Service Provision In Child Protective Services: Child, Caregiver, And Case Predictors, Hannah Mead Holbrook Jan 2019

Referral Patterns And Service Provision In Child Protective Services: Child, Caregiver, And Case Predictors, Hannah Mead Holbrook

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Child maltreatment, and recurrent maltreatment in particular, occurs at an alarmingly high rate. Frequency of reports to Child Protective Services (CPS) is associated with negative psychological outcomes, and children whose reports are unsubstantiated experience similar risk of behavioral, emotional, and substance use disorders as those whose reports are substantiated. Prior research has demonstrated that children with no CPS reports and children with one CPS report showed no significant differences in rates of maltreatment perpetration or substance use in adulthood, suggesting that prevention efforts after one report may have strong merit in reducing negative outcomes in adulthood. However, patterns and risk ...

On The Subject Of Autism: Lacan, First-Person Writing, And Research, Adam Neil Poulin Jan 2019

On The Subject Of Autism: Lacan, First-Person Writing, And Research, Adam Neil Poulin

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

In his essay, Don’t Mourn for Us, Jim Sinclair describes autism as a “way of being.” He maintains there is “no normal child hidden behind the autism” and that “it colors every experience, every sensation, perception, thought, emotion, and encounter, every aspect of existence.” In an attempt to appreciate the depth of Sinclair’s statements, this thesis approaches autism as a “way of being” through the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan. By applying Lacan’s conceptual framework to first-person writing and scientific research, I lay an interdisciplinary foundation for the case I make. Although this project requires significant conceptual ...

Developing A Real-Time Translator From Neural Signals To Text: An Articulatory Phonetics Approach, Lindy Comstock, Ariel Tankus, Michelle Tran, Nader Pouratian, Itzhak Fried, William Speier Jan 2019

Developing A Real-Time Translator From Neural Signals To Text: An Articulatory Phonetics Approach, Lindy Comstock, Ariel Tankus, Michelle Tran, Nader Pouratian, Itzhak Fried, William Speier

Proceedings of the Society for Computation in Linguistics

New developments in brain-computer interfaces (BCI) harness machine learning to decode spoken language from electrocorticographic (ECoG) and local field potential (LFP) signals. Orienting to signals associated with motor movements that produce articulatory features improves phoneme detection quality: individual phonemes share features, but possess a unique feature set; classification by feature set allows for a finer distinction between neural signals. Data indicates vowels are more detectable, consonants have greater detection accuracy, place of articulation informs precision, and manner of articulation affects recall. Findings have implications for the multisensory integration of speech and the role of motor imagery in phonemic neural representations.
