Perioperative Implication Of The Endothelial Glycocalyx, Jong Wook Song, Michael S. Goligorsky Apr 2018

Perioperative Implication Of The Endothelial Glycocalyx, Jong Wook Song, Michael S. Goligorsky

NYMC Faculty Publications

The endothelial glycocalyx (EG) is a gel-like layer lining the luminal surface of healthy vascular endothelium. Recently, the EG has gained extensive interest as a crucial regulator of endothelial funtction, including vascular permeability, mechanotransduction, and the interaction between endothelial and circulating blood cells. The EG is degraded by various enzymes and reactive oxygen species upon pro-inflammatory stimulus. Ischemia-reperfusion injury, oxidative stress, hypervolemia, and systemic inflammatory response are responsible for perioperative EG degradation. Perioperative damage of the EG has also been demonstrated, especially in cardiac surgery. However, the protection of the EG and its association with perioperative morbidity needs to be …

Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome Vascular Pathology: A Focused Review, Danielle M. Eschedor Apr 2018

Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome Vascular Pathology: A Focused Review, Danielle M. Eschedor

Senior Honors Theses

Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria is an accelerated aging disorder caused by a de novo point mutation in the LMNA gene which codes for an intermediate filament of the nuclear lamina called lamin A. The point mutation at c.1824C>T causes a 50-amino-acid deletion that removes the binding site for Zmpste24, a metalloprotease responsible for defarnesylating prelamin A and producing mature lamin A. Without the ability to be defarnesylated, the mutated protein, called progerin, is more lipophilic and has a myriad of cytotoxic effects. As cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in HGPS patients, it is important for both healthcare …

Fast And Robust Segmentation Of White Blood Cell Images By Self-Supervised Learning, Xin Zheng, Yong Wang, Guoyou Wang, Jianguo Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A fast and accurate white blood cell (WBC) segmentation remains a challenging task, as different WBCs vary significantly in color and shape due to cell type differences, staining technique variations and the adhesion between the WBC and red blood cells. In this paper, a self-supervised learning approach, consisting of unsupervised initial segmentation and supervised segmentation refinement, is presented. The first module extracts the overall foreground region from the cell image by K-means clustering, and then generates a coarse WBC region by touching-cell splitting based on concavity analysis. The second module further uses the coarse segmentation result of the first module …

Eat & Tell: A Randomized Trial Of Random-Loss Incentive To Increase Dietary Self-Tracking Compliance, Palakorn Achananuparp, Ee Peng Lim, Vibhanshu Abhishek, Tianjiao Yun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A growing body of evidence has shown that incorporating behavioral economics principles into the design of financial incentive programs helps improve their cost-effectiveness, promote individuals' short-term engagement, and increase compliance in health behavior interventions. Yet, their effects on long-term engagement have not been fully examined. In study designs where repeated administration of incentives is required to ensure the regularity of behaviors, the effectiveness of subsequent incentives may decrease as a result of the law of diminishing marginal utility. In this paper, we introduce random-loss incentive-a new financial incentive based on loss aversion and unpredictability principles-to address the problem of individuals' …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Primaquine (PQ) is the only FDA-approved drug for radical cure of Plasmodium vivax (P.v) malaria, but treatment can result in life-threatening hemolysis if given to a glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase deficient (G6PDd) patient. Therefore, the G6PD status of the patient with P.v must be known prior to prescribing PQ. However, patient G6PD status in rural malaria endemic settings is generally unknown, illuminating the need for reliable point of care G6PD diagnostic tests as a prerequisite to safely administer PQ. To increase community PQ access in Cambodia, performance of CareStartTM G6PD rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) needs to be evaluated in healthcare …
