Sex Differences In Mood And Anxiety-Related Outcomes In Response To Adolescent Nicotine Exposure, Tsun Hay Jason Ng
Sex Differences In Mood And Anxiety-Related Outcomes In Response To Adolescent Nicotine Exposure, Tsun Hay Jason Ng
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Nicotine dependence is causally linked to increased risk of mood/anxiety disorders in later life. Females are reported to experience a higher prevalence of anxiety/depressive disorders and challenges in smoking cessation therapies, suggesting a potential sex-specific response to nicotine exposure and mood/anxiety disorder risk. However, pre-clinical evidence of sex-specific responses to adolescent nicotine exposure is unclear. Thus, to determine any sex differences in anxiety/depressive-related outcomes, adolescent male and female Sprague Dawley rats received nicotine (0.4 mg/kg; 3x daily) or saline injections for 10 consecutive days, followed by behavioural testing, in-vivo electrophysiology and Western Blot analyses. Our results revealed that adolescent nicotine …
"The Land That Feminism Forgot": Birthzillas, Madwives, And The Politics Of Chilbirth, Amber Vayo
"The Land That Feminism Forgot": Birthzillas, Madwives, And The Politics Of Chilbirth, Amber Vayo
Doctoral Dissertations
“The Land that Feminism Forgot” is an in-depth exploration of the politics of childbirth that draws together qualitative and quantitative evidence to theorize the connections between treatment in childbirth and maternal mortality. Situating the qualitative research in the larger national context, the second chapter offers a State Reproductive Autonomy Index that provides an overview of the reproductive policy landscape at the national level. The dissertation then explores the role of institutionalized childbirth, medical mistrust, and obstetric violence in the U.S.’s longstanding maternal mortality crisis and offers policy suggestions in key public health areas. Through 120 qualitative interviews with people who …
Role Of Fat Content On The Structure And Function Of Human Skeletal Muscle, Joseph A. Gordon Iii
Role Of Fat Content On The Structure And Function Of Human Skeletal Muscle, Joseph A. Gordon Iii
Doctoral Dissertations
Muscle size does not fully explain variations in muscle strength. Fat content has been implicated in muscle weakness, though this relationship remains unclear. The relationship between fat and strength may vary between scales (e.g., cellular, organ, and organism). The goal of this dissertation was to clarify the role of fat in the structure and function of muscle using in vitro and in vivo techniques across multiple scales in adults 21-45 years old. Study 1 tested the agreement of intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) content between oil red o (ORO) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) techniques. These measures of IMCL were also compared …

BACKGROUND: Active upper extremity (UE) assistive devices have the potential to restore independent functional movement in individuals with UE impairment due to neuromuscular diseases or injury-induced chronic weakness. Academically fabricated UE assistive devices are not usually optimized for activities of daily living (ADLs), whereas commercially available alternatives tend to lack flexibility in control and activation methods. Both options are typically difficult to don and doff and may be uncomfortable for extensive daily use due to their lack of personalization. To overcome these limitations, we have designed, developed, and clinically evaluated the NuroSleeve, an innovative user-centered UE hybrid orthosis.
METHODS: This …
Overview Of Iron Deficiency And Iron Deficiency Anemia In Women And Girls Of Reproductive Age, Richard J. Derman, Anmol Patted
Overview Of Iron Deficiency And Iron Deficiency Anemia In Women And Girls Of Reproductive Age, Richard J. Derman, Anmol Patted
Global Health Articles
Over 50% of pregnant women are anemic and the majority of these are iron deficient. Micronutrient deficiency, the symptom of heavy menstrual bleeding in nonpregnant individuals, and loss of blood associated with pregnancy and obstetric delivery contribute to iron deficiency (ID). Poor outcomes with low maternal iron can affect not only the pregnancy but can also have major bearings on the offspring. Correction of ID and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant and prepregnant populations with single-dose intravenous iron supplementation may offer improved outcomes. A harmonization process that incorporates all major randomized controlled trials studying the use of single-dose IV …

‘Safe Couch, Safe House’ Program (Scshp): Reducing Exposure To Toxic Flame Retardants For Children In A Low-Income Public Housing At Hunters View, Bayview-Hunters Point, San Francisco., Aliza Khan
Master's Projects and Capstones
Since the 1970s, flame retardants have been used extensively in consumer goods, including furniture, textile, and electronics, to meet California’s flammability standards. (Gibson et al.,2019) Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs), once the most widely used flame retardants being used in consumer products, were phased out from use in manufacturing as evidence emerged about PBDEs persistence and toxicity. (Hoffman et al.,2017) PBDEs were replaced by Organophosphate Flame Retardants (OPFRs), which has proven to be a case of ‘regrettable substitution’ as exposure to OPFRs is ubiquitous and pervasive in humans due to their volatility and propensity to leach from products into the environment. …

Innate Immune System In The Context Of Radiation Therapy For Cancer, Boopathi Ettickan, Robert Den, Chellappagounder Thangavel
Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
Radiation therapy (RT) remains an integral component of modern oncology care, with most cancer patients receiving radiation as a part of their treatment plan. The main goal of ionizing RT is to control the local tumor burden by inducing DNA damage and apoptosis within the tumor cells. The advancement in RT, including intensity-modulated RT (IMRT), stereotactic body RT (SBRT), image-guided RT, and proton therapy, have increased the efficacy of RT, equipping clinicians with techniques to ensure precise and safe administration of radiation doses to tumor cells. In this review, we present the technological advancement in various types of RT methods …

Lung Volume Reduction For Emphysema Using One-Way Endobronchial Valves: An Australian Cohort, Calvin Sidhu, Nicholas Wilsmore, Narinder Shargill, Kanishka Rangamuwa
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Emphysema can be associated with gas trapping and hyperinflation, which negatively impacts on quality of life, life expectancy, and functional capacity. Lung volume reduction (LVR) surgery can reduce gas trapping and improve mortality in select patients but carries a high risk of major complications. Bronchoscopic techniques for LVR using one-way endobronchial valves (EBV) have become an established efficacious alternative to surgery. A bi-center retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with severe emphysema who underwent endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) using Pulmonx Zephyr EBVs. Symptomatic patients with gas-trapping and hyperinflation on lung function testing were selected. Target-lobe selection was based …

Pannexin3 In Exercise, Obesity, And Osteoarthritis, Brent Wakefield
Pannexin3 In Exercise, Obesity, And Osteoarthritis, Brent Wakefield
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Pannexin 3 (PANX3), is a glycoprotein that oligomerizes to form mechano-sensitive channels expressed in musculoskeletal tissues, and has been identified as a potential target for the treatment of obesity and osteoarthritis (OA). Obesity and OA are two of the most prevalent diseases worldwide, leading to disability and even death. These conditions are thought to originate from a complex interaction between genetics, aging, sex, and modifiable lifestyle factors, such as exercise. Investigating the interactions between genetic and exercise may provide a more comprehensive, context-specific understanding of gene function. This thesis aimed to understand the interactions between PANX3 and exercise interventions on …

Within one month of weekly sessions, Alison was able to be on her tummy, began to crawl, became more agile in seated play, was squatting and standing and took her first steps.
The Role Of Dlc1Β In Attenuating Cardiac Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury During Heart Transplantation, Samantha L. Collings
The Role Of Dlc1Β In Attenuating Cardiac Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury During Heart Transplantation, Samantha L. Collings
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) occurs intra-operatively during heart transplantation (HTx), underpinning graft survival. Past research implicated the PI3K/Akt1 & RhoA/ROCK pathways in IRI. Rho-GTPase activity/Akt regulates Deleted-in-liver-cancer 1 protein’s beta-isoform (DLC1β). Therefore, we hypothesized that DLC1β overexpression (OE) had anti-apoptotic effects. In vitro, HL-1 cells (mouse cardiomyocytes) received chamber hypoxia-oxygenation reperfusion (H/R) for 24H4R with/without DLC1β plasmid, before collection for protein/mRNA analyses. DLC1β-OE resulted in downregulated pro-apoptotic mRNA expression (Bax/Cycs/Casp3), upregulated protective mRNA targets (BCl2/Akt1) and less late/early apoptosis via flow cytometry. Results were confirmed via H9C2 (rat cardiomyocyte) cell lines. In vivo, C57/BL6 mice received heterotopic HTx with/without DLC1β-OE …
