INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on mental health globally, with limited access to mental health care affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) the most. In response, alternative strategies to support mental health have been necessary, with access to green spaces being a potential solution. While studies have highlighted the role of green spaces in promoting mental health during pandemic lockdowns, few studies have focused on the role of green spaces in mental health recovery after lockdowns. This study investigated changes in green space access and associations with mental health recovery in Bangladesh and Egypt across the …

BACKGROUND: The May 2022 global outbreak of monkeypox (MPX) poses a threat to the health of men who have sex with men. However, there is limited data on the willingness of MSM to receive monkeypox vaccination in Southern China. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of MPX, concerns regarding MPX, and willingness to receive monkeypox vaccination, as well as their correlates, among MSM in China.

METHODS: We conducted a Web-based online survey of MSM in Southern China from August to September 2022. Data were collected on the socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, worries, concerns regarding MPX and willingness to receive monkeypox …

Genome-Based Pathogenicity Potential Of Salmonella Isolated From Diverse Sources, Jared Mr Crocco Jan 2024

Genome-Based Pathogenicity Potential Of Salmonella Isolated From Diverse Sources, Jared Mr Crocco

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Bacterial human pathogens are among the leading causes of death around the world, especially in low income and developing countries. One important element in a bacterium’s ability to cause disease are genes that directly contribute to pathogenicity called virulence factors. A second significant aspect are antimicrobial resistance genes which allow microorganisms to persist in the presence of antimicrobial agents. In this project I aimed to determine if Salmonella isolated from different sources differed in pathogenicity profiles based on the complement of genes identified through genomic analysis. Accordingly, Salmonella genomes were organized into 8 groups: animal, clinical, human, environmental, food, water …

Abortion Disorientation, Greer Donley, Caroline M. Kelly Jan 2024

Abortion Disorientation, Greer Donley, Caroline M. Kelly

Articles

The word “abortion” pervades public discourse in the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. But do we know what it means? Not only do law and medicine define it differently; state legislatures have codified wildly different definitions of abortion across jurisdictions. Our analysis exposes inherent ambiguities at the boundaries of the term, particularly as abortion intersects with other categories that we often think of as distinct: pregnancy loss, ectopic pregnancy, and other forms of medically necessary care. By juxtaposing statutory text next to real people’s experiences of being denied care in states with abortion bans, we reveal …

Presentations Of Cutaneous Disease In Various Skin Pigmentations: Steroid Atrophy, Marshall Hall, Ysabelle Martinez, Wenqin Du, Christian Scheufele, Christopher M. Wong

North Texas Research Forum 2024

Introduction: Topical steroids are commonly prescribed first-line medications for various inflammatory and autoimmune dermatologic conditions. Their widespread use raises the importance of proper use. Topical steroids have well-known side effects including skin atrophy, redness, striae, and telangiectasias. These side effects have not been well documented in patients of various skin tones. Primary care clinicians must recognize topical steroid side effects and their appearance in various skin tones. This paper will focus on representing skin atrophy, the most common steroid side effect, in a variety of Fitzpatrick skin types. Case Presentation: We present a series of images illustrating skin atrophy …

Comparison Of 3 Treatments For Fractures Of The Humeral Shaft, Neil Werthmann, Mason Poffenbarger, John Riehl

North Texas Research Forum 2024

INTRODUCTION: Over the past 40 years, surgical treatment for humeral shaft fractures has become more common. The purpose of the study was to evaluate complication rates seen with different treatments for humeral shaft fractures. Nerve injury (NI), infection, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and nonunion (NU) were the specific complications investigated. METHODS: A retrospective database review was performed looking at all patients with humeral shaft fractures. Data was analyzed for complication rates for non-surgical (NS) treatment, open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), and intramedullary nailing (IMN). Inclusion criteria were: 1) patients ages of 18 to 89 and 2) those with humeral shaft …

Association Of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Treatment With Perioperative And Postoperative Complications In Patients Undergoing Elective Bariatric Surgery, Justin Sanchez, Enith Espinosa, Sean Sojdie, Michael Green, Lauren Wonderly Jan 2024

Association Of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Treatment With Perioperative And Postoperative Complications In Patients Undergoing Elective Bariatric Surgery, Justin Sanchez, Enith Espinosa, Sean Sojdie, Michael Green, Lauren Wonderly

North Texas Research Forum 2024

Glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA) are FDA-approved medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity, and are also beneficial in cardiovascular risk reduction. However, due to known GLP-1 RA adverse effects, notably delayed gastric emptying, the ASA has implemented GLP-1RA guidelines aiming to minimize potential complications related to GLP-1 RA use in patients undergoing procedures requiring general anesthesia. With the ever-increasing number of patients being prescribed GLP-1 RAs, more research needs to be conducted to investigate their potential impact in other areas of healthcare. This retrospective study aims to compare surgical outcomes before and following the …
