Background Studies looking at perceived stigma and mental health in sub-Saharan African (SSA) populations have been limited to examining stigma in HIV-affected populations. Mental health issues are of increasing concern for college students, and this rise necessitates understanding perceived stigma in African immigrant students in the US to address their mental health care needs. Methods Data on SSA undergraduate and graduate students (n=723) was obtained from the 2016-2019 cycles of the Healthy Minds Network (HMN), an annual survey conducted on US university campuses. Biofilms are typically studied in bacterial media that allow the study of important properties such as bacterial growth. However, the results obtained in such media cannot take into account the bacterial localization/clustering caused by bacteria–protein interactions in vivo and the accompanying alterations in phenotype, virulence factor production, and ultimately antibiotic tolerance. We and others have reported that methicillin-resistant or methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA or MSSA, respectively) and other pathogens assemble a proteinaceous matrix in synovial fluid. This proteinaceous bacterial aggregate is coated by a polysaccharide matrix as is characteristic of biofilms. In this study, we identify proteins important for this …

Background

Prior research examining the relationship between cannabis use, sedentary behavior, and physical activity has generated conflicting findings, potentially due to biases in the self-reported measures used to assess physical activity. This study aimed to more precisely explore the relationship between cannabis use and sedentary behavior/physical activity using objective measures.

Methods

Data were obtained from the 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 2,092 participants (ages 20–59; 48.8% female) had accelerometer-measured sedentary behavior, light physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. High-quality metadata annotations for data hosted in large public repositories are essential for research reproducibility and for conducting fast, powerful and scalable meta-analyses. Currently, a majority of sequencing samples in the National Center for Biotechnology Information's Sequence Read Archive (SRA) are missing metadata across several categories. In an effort to improve the metadata coverage of these samples, we leveraged almost 44 million attribute-value pairs from SRA BioSample to train a scalable, recurrent neural network that predicts missing metadata via named entity recognition (NER). Community Psychiatric Services for the Elderly (CPSE) at a large teaching hospital in Toronto has offered a monthly support group for caregivers of persons with dementia for over 30 years. Participants were surveyed in January 2018 about group attendance, benefits of attending the group, and areas for improvement. Results are shared in this case study. A total of 8 participants responded to the survey with a response rate of 47%. The feedback was predominantly positive. Findings aimed to inform the development of a prehabilitation program to empower patients to optimize their recovery and enhance their experience of general surgery. In April 2020, the New York State Department of Health issued guidelines regarding suspension of hospital visitation due to coronavirus disease 2019 to protect staff and patients and prevent spread of the virus. Recognizing that patients would need extraordinary emotional support as they faced this frightening journey, two hospitals from a health system in the national epicenter provided avenues to bridge gaps in connectedness and communication. Our program provided virtual, visual and emotional connectivity by utilizing repurposed staff to serve as patient experience ambassadors.
