Impaired Aicd In Senescent Cd8 T-Cells: Cell Death Pathwayselectivity & The Effects Of Alcohol, Nabil Essajee, I Welsh, Pm Mcternan, David A. Welsh, Robert W. Siggins

Medical Research Day

Background: Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is prevalent in People Living with HIV (PLWH). Chronic alcohol use and HIV infections are both stressors that can accelerate the onset of cellular senescence, a pro-inflammatory phenotype associated with unhealthy ageing and contributor to the phenomenon known as “inflamm-aging.” Furthermore, it has been observed that in senescent cells, there is an impairment of Activation-Induced Cell Death (AICD). The mechanism of impairment of AICD in senescent cells remains unknown. The goal of our research is to investigate by which pathway of cell death (apoptosis, pyroptosis, necroptosis) senescent cells are susceptible by analyzing markers of senescence …

The Potential Role Of Atn-161 As An Integrin Α5Β1 Inhibitor In Preventing Commonviral Infections, Peter Issa, H Wang, Ko Mcdonald, Be Ouvrier, Gj Bix

Medical Research Day

Integrins are transmembrane proteins which mediate many cellular signaling processes such as immunological function, extracellular matrix composition, apoptosis, and cell adhesion. In addition to these features, integrins have been implicated in viral infection. Integrin alpha5beta1, which has an arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) binding motif, has been shown to play a role in the pathogenesis of many viruses including porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (PHEV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1), and severe acute respiratory syndrome- coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, a concise review of the role of integrin alpha5beta1 with regards to viruses and its potential as an antiviral therapeutic, especially with regards to SARS- …

Differential Expression Of Fibrogenic Biomarkers In Naïve Human Synoviocytes Cultured In Synovial Fluid From Knee Osteoarthritis Patients, Jose Cruz Ayala, Peter Issa, Stefan Sarkovich, Jennifer Simkin, Vinod Dasa, Luis Marrero

Medical Research Day

The synovium maintains normal joint function by secreting the fundamental components of synovial fluid (SF), but is also susceptible to inflammatory and fibrotic thickening during osteoarthritis (OA), contributing to disease symptomology. We recently published evidence that synovial fibrosis (SFb) presents heterogeneously in a large sample of patients with end-stage OA in association with deficits in range of motion (ROM). During OA, diseased chondrocytes and synoviocytes undergo a dynamic crosstalk that influences severity of cartilage degradation and synoviopathy. Therefore, we aim to test the responses of validated commercial human fibroblast- like synoviocytes (HFLS) after stimulation with SF from high or low …

Characterizing Human Random-Sequence Generation In Competitive And Non-Competitive Environments Using Lempel-Ziv Complexity, Alice Wong, Garance Merholz, Uri Maoz

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The human ability for random-sequence generation (RSG) is limited but improves in a competitive game environment with feedback. However, it remains unclear how random people can be during games and whether RSG during games can improve when explicitly informing people that they must be as random as possible to win the game. Nor is it known whether any such improvement in RSG transfers outside the game environment. To investigate this, we designed a pre/post intervention paradigm around a Rock-Paper-Scissors game followed by a questionnaire. During the game, we manipulated participants’ level of awareness of the computer’s strategy; they were either …

Education Level Moderates The Effect Of Brain Atrophy On Cognition Inmultiple Sclerosis, Carrie Pham, Caitlyn Kelly, Jaeyeon Kweon, Jesus Lovera, Deidre Devier Oct 2021

Education Level Moderates The Effect Of Brain Atrophy On Cognition Inmultiple Sclerosis, Carrie Pham, Caitlyn Kelly, Jaeyeon Kweon, Jesus Lovera, Deidre Devier

Medical Research Day

The cognitive reserve theory refers to how clinical manifestations of brain pathology are affected by the brain’s ability to use preexisting cognitive processes to cope with and adapt to neurological insult or damage. Studies suggest that greater intellectual ability leading to greater educational attainment may attenuate the negative cognitive effects of brain atrophy by increasing cognitive reserve, protecting against cognitive impairment. Based on this theory, we were interested in seeing if the cognitive effects of brain atrophy, measured by the third ventricle width (TVW), would be attenuated in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who had more than 12 years of …

Effects Of Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines: A Retrospective Analysis Ofbreast Cancer Patients Under Age 50 In A University Academic Center, Kaylee Woodard, Jane Ball, Brooke Morrell

Medical Research Day

In 2009, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) released updated breast cancer screening guidelines recommending against routine screening mammography in women aged 40-49. The task forceconcluded that the decision to start regular, biennial screening mammography before age 50 years should be an individual one considering patient context, including the patient's values regarding specific benefits and potential harms. In January 2016, the USPSTF reinforced these guidelines in their Final Recommendation Statement grading screening mammography prior to age 50 as a Grade C, stating there is at least moderate certainty that the net benefit is small. Despite the USPSTF’s findings, it …

Medical Research Day

Abnormal lipid metabolism is the derivation of multiple retinal degenerative and blinding diseases. In the LSU Neuroscience Center, the membrane-type frizzled-related protein (MFRP), and adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) were shown to be vital to the maintenance of a healthy retinal lipidome. The two mice models of retinal degenerations Mfrprd6 and Adipor1 -/- resulted in a reduction of phospholipids containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6) and very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs). In a pathway involving the omega 3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6), the fatty acid elongase-4 (ELOVL4) elongates the fatty acid 28:6 into VLC-PUFAs, …

Analysis Of Maximal Intramedullary Nail Separation In Pediatric Femur Fractures, John Cooper, Michael Heffernan, Claudia Leonardi, Manaf Younis, William Arnold

Medical Research Day

Background: Pediatric femur fractures are the most common orthopedic surgery requiring hospitalizations along with monitoring for 12-24 months after discharge. Flexible intramedullary (IM) nailing is a common technique for the treatment of pediatric femur fractures and has yielded shorter time to weight-bearing and return to activity when compared to spica casting and external fixation. The nails pass through the medulla in either a ‘C-’ or ‘S-’ shaped configuration and, as a byproduct, produce three points of fixation: the proximal nail crossing, the maximal point of separation, and the distal nail crossing. Recent literature suggests that the point of maximal nail …
