The Relationship Of Abdominal Breathing And Relaxation During Labor, Loann Mac Dougall, Judith Miller Jun 1968

The Relationship Of Abdominal Breathing And Relaxation During Labor, Loann Mac Dougall, Judith Miller

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A causal-comparative, study was done in a university hospital using twelve subjects to determine if the "unprepared" patient could learn and carry out abdominal breathing during contractions. It was hypothesized that the "unprepared" patient in early labor could be taught and could carry out deep slow abdominal breathing during uterine contractions with decreased skeletal muscle tension as measured by an electromyograph.

Two tools were used for data collection, (1) a portable electro myograph to obtain an objective evaluation of the effect of abdominal breathing upon skeletal muscle relaxation; and (2) a supplementary data sheet for the collection of identifying material …

Everyday Living Needs Of The Non-Acute Medical Patient That Can Be Met By Public Health Nursing, F. Yvonne Miller Jun 1968

Everyday Living Needs Of The Non-Acute Medical Patient That Can Be Met By Public Health Nursing, F. Yvonne Miller

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The elementary principles of home nursing care have been employed since the dawn of time. These principles have evolved into the present-day home care programs. Due to the increase of chronic disease, a longer life span, a rise in hospital costs, and the changes in medical care — new demands are being made in planning for nursing care in the home.

The problem of this study was to determine by patient evaluation which everyday living needs would be present upon discharge and if these needs could be met best by Public Health nursing. For the purpose of this study patient …

A Study Of Alveolar Bone Loss And Two-Hour Postprandial Blood Sugar Levels, R. Leslie Arnett Jun 1968

A Study Of Alveolar Bone Loss And Two-Hour Postprandial Blood Sugar Levels, R. Leslie Arnett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Two-hour postprandial blood sugar determinations were carried out on 500 patients referred for periodontal care. The mean percentage of alveolar bone loss around the mandibular bicuspid teeth was established for each individual. The subjects were then grouped according to blood sugar levels and the mean alveolar bone loss was calculated. The group was separated into male and female sub-groups and data was computed for these segments as well as the total sample. The data was evaluated in a similar manner for those subjects between 40 and 49 years of age.

No Chi-square determinations were statistically significant but significance in differences …

The Advantages Of A Condyle-Gnathion Reference Line In Roentgenographic Cephalometry, Ernest N. Chan Jun 1968

The Advantages Of A Condyle-Gnathion Reference Line In Roentgenographic Cephalometry, Ernest N. Chan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Evaluation of the cephalograms of 150 patients showed a wide range in the angulation of the lower border of the mandible to the various facial planes. The degree of this angulation did not always correspond with the severity of malocclusion. Group I represents normal occlusions, Group II comprises malocclusions.

A new reference line is submitted for the investigation of its advantages in cephalometric roentgenography. The mandibular radius drawn through the geometric center of the condyle to the point gnathion is correlated with several indices of facial growth, namely (1) ANB difference, (2) upper facial:lower facial height and (3) PoNB distance …

The Development Of An Instrument For Three Dimensional Analysis Of Micron Quantities Of Tooth Movement, M. Clark Lamberton

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In order to quantitate initial tooth movement in response to forces applied to the tooth crown, an instrument for intraoral use has been developed. The photomicrometer consists of nine photosensitive cells mounted in an assembly of two layers. Eight of the cells were mounted to form X and Y axes, top layer and bottom layer, to measure horizontal movements. The ninth cell was mounted in the center of the bottom layer and was used for alignment and for measurements in the Z or vertical axis. The photocell assembly was approximately 10 mm diameter and 6 mm high. This assembly when …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Robert G. Ingersoll's Lectures On Religion., Stanley E. Paregien May 1968

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Robert G. Ingersoll's Lectures On Religion., Stanley E. Paregien

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this thesis was to present a rhetorical analysis of Robert G. Ingersoll's lectures on religion. Twelve of his lectures, spanning his career as a proponent of rationalism, free thought, and agnosticism were studied as a representative sampling of his public speaking. This rhetorical analysis of Ingersoll's lectures reveals that his popularity was not the product of calculated rhetorical chicanery or sophistry. Such an approach would have been unsuccessful, since his audiences had every reason not to listen and many persons were constantly looking for faults in his lectures. Caught up in an era of sweeping social changes, …

Normal Development Of The Aortic Isthmus, Elizabeth Short May 1968

Normal Development Of The Aortic Isthmus, Elizabeth Short

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The development of the aortic isthmus, that region of the arch of the aorta between the left subclavian artery and the attachment of the ligamentum arteriosum, has received little attention. While the developmental history of the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale has been well documented, as have the cardiac malformations associated with failure to complete this developmental sequence, little work has been done to define the normal sequence of isthmus development in its transition to an adult configuration in the postnatal period. It has long been recognized that the cardiac malformation known as infantile or preductal coarctation of the aorta …

Teacher's Attitudes And Teacher's And Student's Knowledge Of Alcohol And Alcoholism In Selected Utah High Schools, Ladawn Anderson Gibbons

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A comparison of teacher's attitudes and teacher's and student's knowledge of alcohol and alcoholism were studied in nine selected high schools in Utah.

It was found that some teachers knew important positive facts about alcohol and alcoholism, but when personal obligations were written into "attitude" questions, their responses changed.

Some health and driver education teachers were poorly informed on the subject of alcohol and alcoholism. Some important facts known by teachers were either being deleted from instruction on alcohol or not being communicated very well.

In some schools it appears that students are learning about alcohol and alcoholism from other …
