The Influences Of Medical Students' Consent To Participate In Thalassemia Research, Raditya Wratsangka, Donna Adriani, Endrico Xavierees Tungka, Aditya Krishna Murthi

Kesmas

An effective way of learning about thalassemia, a complex public health issue with multiple perspectives, is through participating in research. This study used an inductive approach to presume the influencing factors of students' consent to participate in thalassemia research voluntarily. Nested in the preliminary stage of a research series on thalassemia, this study used a consecutive sampling to recruit 140 medical undergraduates. Their knowledge, experience, and attitude to thalassemia and the perception of self-quality life were assessed using self-administered questionnaires. Blood samples were drawn for carrier screening. Students' GPAs were collected from faculty records. Of 140 participants, only 123 had …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Adverse early-life experiences (ELA) affect a majority of the world's children. Whereas the enduring impact of ELA on cognitive and emotional health is established, there are no tools to predict vulnerability to ELA consequences in an individual child. Epigenetic markers including peripheral-cell DNA-methylation profiles may encode ELA and provide predictive outcome markers, yet the interindividual variance of the human genome and rapid changes in DNA methylation in childhood pose significant challenges. Hoping to mitigate these challenges we examined the relation of several ELA dimensions to DNA methylation changes and outcome using a within-subject longitudinal design and a high methylation-change threshold. …

BioMedicine

Background: Metastasis of breast cancer cells to distant sites including lungs, liver, lymph node, brain and many more have substantially affected the overall survival outcome and distant metastasis free survival rate amongst the diseased individuals. Several pre-clinical and clinical studies were carried out to determine the potency of vigorous inhibitors but they extensively deteriorated the patient’s quality of life. Hence, there exists an urgent need to explore potent natural remedy to fight against metastatic breast cancer.

Methods: Ayurvedic medicinal plants documented in literature for their ability to fight against breast cancer was screened and their respective active moieties were evaluated …

BioMedicine

Background Fatty acid synthase (FASN), a key rate-limiting enzyme in the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway has been identified to be overexpressed in breast cancer. This overexpression has been affiliated with poor prognosis and resistance to chemotherapeutics. Consequently, FASN has come into focus as an appealing potential target for breast cancer treatment. Available FASN inhibitors, however, are unstable and have been correlated with adverse side effects. Objective This present study aims to investigate the potential of Andrographis paniculata ethanolic crude extract (AP) as a potent FASN inhibitor in breast cancer cells. Materials & Methods This study used MTT assay and flow …

Glutaminase - A Potential Target For Cancer Treatment, Josephine Anthony, Sureka Varalakshmi, Ashok Kumar Sekar, Nalini Devarajan, Balamurugan Janakiraman, Rajendran Peramaiyan

BioMedicine

The overexpression of glutaminase is reported to influence cancer growth and metastasis through glutaminolysis. Upregulation of glutamine catabolism is recently recognized as a critical feature of cancer, and cancer cells are observed to reprogram glutamine metabolism to maintain its survival and proliferation. Special focus is given on the glutaminase isoform, GLS1 (kidney type glutaminase), as the other isoform GLS2 (Liver type glutaminase) acts as a tumour suppressor in some conditions. Glutaminolysis linked with autophagy, which is mediated via mTORC1, also serves as a promising target for cancer therapy. Glutamine also plays a vital role in maintaining redox homeostasis. Inhibition of …

Unveiling The Power Of Flavonoids: A Dynamic Exploration Of Their Impact On Cancer Through Matrix Metalloproteinases Regulation, Peramaiyan Rajendran

BioMedicine

Cancer is a prominent contributor to mortality rates globally, with its progression and spread being the primary factors underlying this assertion. Despite advancements in cancer therapy, the existing therapeutic strategies are rendered useless as a result of their toxicity and the development of chemoresistance. Hence, it is imperative to assess alternate therapy modalities, and natural compounds present a promising prospect due to their demonstrated anticancer capabilities in several research models. This article provides an overview of the regulatory mechanisms involved in the expression of metalloproteinases (MMPs) and explores the potential therapeutic function of flavonoids as agents with anticancer activity that …

Al-Mustaqbal Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Sciences

A category of inherited blood illnesses known as beta-thalassemias are defined by abnormalities in the synthesis of hemoglobin beta chains, which can result in a wide range of phenotypes, from severe anemia to people who show no symptoms at all. People who have thalassemia major typically experience severe anemia during the first two years of life, necessitating frequent red blood cell (RBC) transfusions.

Management of individuals with β-thalassemia is centered on appropriate, safe blood transfusions (free of transfusion-transmitted illnesses) and prevention of iron excess. Complications from iron overload are brought on by routine transfusion therapy.

This study is a retrospective …

Al-Mustaqbal Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Sciences

The worldwide outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic compelled scientists to develop new, highly effective therapeutic approaches to fight it. Multitarget drugs have been proven to be effective in managing complex disorders. But designing multitarget drugs is a great challenge. In this study, to prevent a lack of efficacy due to viral mutation escape, a multi-target agent against the COVID-19 virus was discovered. As crucial targets, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), COVID-19 main protease (Mpro), and SARS-CoV-2 Nsp15 were selected. A pharmacophore model was developed using the native ligands of the chosen targets. This model was used to screen the ZINC Drug …

Internal Family Systems And Codependency: Finding Self In Relationship With Another Person’S Addiction, Jillian Ostlund, Mandah Gombosuren

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Codependency is a concept that is currently not considered a disorder in the DSM-V, yet people have been identifying with the traits of codependency since the 1940's (Bacon et al., 2018). In IFS the concept of blending means Parts are not able to differentiate from one another, making it difficult to sense Self Leadership (Schwartz & Sweezy, 2020). The researchers for this proposal were not able to find literature on the treatment of codependency using IFS. It is believed that IFS can help a codependent person to gain access to Self and be able to recover from the effects of …
