Innovation In Health Science Education: An Experiential Learning Program, Lily Apedaile
International Journal of Health Sciences Education
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic disrupted health professions education on a number of different levels. Many health professions and pre-health professions students lost access to real-world clinical experience which has lead to disruptions in the healthcare workforce pipeline. At the University of Montana a diverse group of health professions educators designed an innovative experiential learning program, called Griz Health, that would allow UM students to engage in healthcare experiences while helping the campus with COVID-19 response. Because of the overwhelmingly positive response from students and community members that participated in this program, the Griz Health program was shifted from a volunteer response …

The three-dimensional (3D) genome structure plays a fundamental role in gene regulation and cellular functions. Recent studies in 3D genomics inferred the very basic functional chromatin folding structures known as chromatin loops, the long-range chromatin interactions that are mediated by protein factors and dynamically extruded by cohesin. We combined the use of FISH staining of a very short (33 kb) chromatin fragment, interferometric photoactivated localization microscopy (iPALM), and traveling salesman problem-based heuristic loop reconstruction algorithm from an image of the one of the strongest CTCF-mediated chromatin loops in human lymphoblastoid cells. In total, we have generated thirteen good quality images …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been shown to play important roles in viral infections, but their associations with SARS-CoV-2 infection remain poorly understood. Here, we detected 85 differentially expressed miRNAs (DE-miRNAs) from 2,336 known and 361 novel miRNAs that were identified in 233 plasma samples from 61 healthy controls and 116 patients with COVID-19 using the high-throughput sequencing and computational analysis. These DE-miRNAs were associated with SASR-CoV-2 infection, disease severity, and viral persistence in the patients with COVID-19, respectively. Gene ontology and KEGG pathway analyses of the DE-miRNAs revealed their connections to viral infections, immune responses, and lung diseases. Finally, we established …

The Community Health Worker: Improving Prenatal Health In Rural And Minority Populations, Deirdre A. Martinez
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
The United States continues to have an unacceptably high rate of preventable deaths among pregnant and new mothers—the highest rate among developed countries. Pregnancy outcomes are especially poor in minority, rural, and medically-underserved populations, with lack of access to healthcare being identified as a primary factor in poor pregnancy outcomes and pregnancy-related deaths. It is imperative that action be taken to reverse this disturbing trend. Introduction of the Community Health Worker (CHW) into the multidisciplinary healthcare team is a solution that results in increased access to healthcare, along with many other positive health outcomes, and is one way in which …

The Effect Of Platelet-Rich Plasma On Recovery In Athletes With A Grade Iii Lateral Ankle Sprain, Matthew Attolino
The Effect Of Platelet-Rich Plasma On Recovery In Athletes With A Grade Iii Lateral Ankle Sprain, Matthew Attolino
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Lateral ankle sprains are the most common cause of missed athletic participation. One emerging therapy that has been used to hasten recovery from orthopedic injuries is injection with platelet-rich plasma. However, the effect of platelet-rich plasma on recovery from lateral ankle sprains has only been studied in the context of less severe injuries (grades one and two). We hypothesize that a platelet-rich plasma injection will decrease the mean days to return to play in athletes with a severe (grade three) lateral ankle sprain. We will conduct a multicenter randomized controlled trial to investigate the mean days to return to play …
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Facilitated-Resuscitation For Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Gloria Ho
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Facilitated-Resuscitation For Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Gloria Ho
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest are abysmal and have largely remained unchanged over the last several decades. A recent single center study of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest found that early cannulation with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation could improve mortality rates. It is unclear if these findings are generalizable to and reproducible at other hospitals. The goal of this study is to assess the rate of survival to hospital discharge for patients treated with early extracorporeal membrane oxygenation compared to standard advanced cardiovascular life support. To this end, we will conduct a multi-center, intention-to-treat, randomized controlled trial in adults with …
Efficacy Of Topical Silymarin In Melasma Treatment During Pregnancy And Breastfeeding, Warunee Nowak
Efficacy Of Topical Silymarin In Melasma Treatment During Pregnancy And Breastfeeding, Warunee Nowak
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Melasma is a common hyperpigmentation disorder that negatively impacts quality of life. Melasma predominately affects women of reproductive age and is commonly acquired during pregnancy. Current treatment options focus on prevention with limited therapies available once melasma has developed for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. One potential therapy that has shown promise for the treatment of melasma is silymarin, a derivative of milk thistle. However, the effect of silymarin on melasma in the pregnant and breastfeeding population has never been investigated. This double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial will investigate whether topical silymarin can improve the severity of melasma in pregnant …
The Effects Of Mindful Meditation Skills-Training For Healthcare Providers On Patient Satisfaction, Gaia Mohr-Tonachini
The Effects Of Mindful Meditation Skills-Training For Healthcare Providers On Patient Satisfaction, Gaia Mohr-Tonachini
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Mindfulness-based interventions have become an increasingly popular and accepted approach to reducing burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress among healthcare professionals. However, the effects of how a mindfulness-based intervention might impact a clinician’s patient care and patient-provider relationship are not known. In this study, we aim to discover if providing healthcare professionals with a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program will improve their patient-provider relationship as indicated by a statistically significant change in Press Ganey patient satisfaction scores. Providers recruited from Yale Health will be randomized into an intervention group or wait-list control group. Mean patient satisfaction scores will be analyzed for each …

A collaborative partnership launched the Great Grocer Project (GGP) in March 2021 in Detroit, Michigan where health inequities, including deaths due to COVID-19, have historically been politically determined and informed by socially entrenched norms. Institutional and structural racism has contributed to a lack of diversity in store ownership among Detroit grocers and limited access to high-quality, affordable healthy foods as well as disparate food insecurity among Detroit residents. The GGP seeks to promote Detroit’s healthy grocers to improve community health and economic vitality through research, programs, and policies that have the potential to advance health equity. A cross-sectional design was …

Prevalence Of Postpartum Depression In Occupied Palestine, Amneh Amro
Prevalence Of Postpartum Depression In Occupied Palestine, Amneh Amro
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
In a world where everything has been modernized and progressively accepted, has modern medicine kept up? With a growing population, is the accessibility to healthcare service meeting the demand and without bias? More importantly, has the growing population broken down the stigmas associated with medical conditions, like postpartum depression? There has been a notable disparity in mental health treatment worldwide, and even more so in Palestine and other third world countries of similar nature.
Improving Quality Of Communication In Pediatric Perioperative Outpatient Setting Using Aidet And Commit To Sit, Hyo Ryung Kim
Improving Quality Of Communication In Pediatric Perioperative Outpatient Setting Using Aidet And Commit To Sit, Hyo Ryung Kim
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: Effective and therapeutic communication in the health care setting is multidisciplinary,
complex, and has unique challenges for each microsystem. The perioperative setting is an
especially challenging environment for healthcare workers to provide therapeutic
communication, as uniquely high-risk and time-sensitive information must be disseminated in a
language that is understandable for the patient(Osborne-Smith & Kyle Hodgen, 2017). A
microsystem assessment of an outpatient pediatric perioperative setting reflected some of the
challenges the healthcare workers were facing when communicating with their patients and
family members. Upon evaluation of the monthly NRC (National Research Corporation) score
prior to implementation of two …
Save Lives And Sanitize: Prevention Of Surgical Site Infections Post-Cesarean Section Through Increased Hand Hygiene Compliance, Lindsay N. Nance
Save Lives And Sanitize: Prevention Of Surgical Site Infections Post-Cesarean Section Through Increased Hand Hygiene Compliance, Lindsay N. Nance
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Surgical site infections (SSIs) occur in 3-15% of cesarean sections, making SSIs one of the most common hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Surgical site infections (SSIs) have increased within a Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit in a large California teaching hospital for the past three years, affecting reimbursement and creating a range of adverse outcomes for patients. Performance of consistent and thorough hand hygiene practices is key to preventing infection, yet the unit’s hand hygiene compliance of 66.7% is well below the facility’s target goal of 90%. Based on recommendations from the organization’s Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) specialist, the …
Every Milliliter Matters: Quantitative Blood Loss In Postpartum, Iana Vatsenko
Every Milliliter Matters: Quantitative Blood Loss In Postpartum, Iana Vatsenko
Master's Projects and Capstones
Postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States. Postpartum hemorrhage occurs when mothers are bleeding excessively, have uterine atony, or the placenta has failed to come out completely. Research has shown that quantitative methods of blood loss estimation revealed a higher incidence of PPH than visual estimation. That is why using quantitative methods on time is essential for diagnosing PPH. Quantification of blood loss should be replaced by estimated blood loss since it is more accurate. The project's main focus was implementing quantification of blood loss and using the Triton Scale, a smart system to …
Every Milliliter Matters: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Postpartum Quantified Blood Loss, Amy O. Quinones
Every Milliliter Matters: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Postpartum Quantified Blood Loss, Amy O. Quinones
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: The microsystem for maternal-child healthcare in 2020 had 5.9% of deliveries progress to a postpartum hemorrhage. In 2021, the percentage of deliveries that progressed to a postpartum hemorrhage increased to 12.3%. The nearly two-fold increase in postpartum hemorrhage occurrence led to the creation of the Quality Improvement (QI) initiative to identify postpartum hemorrhage at an earlier stage. The QI initiative aims to extend the quantitative blood loss (QBL) measurement beyond labor and delivery, and support identification of postpartum hemorrhage in the postpartum period.
Context: The microsystem that this quality improvement project occurred on were three postpartum units in a …

Surgical Site Infections: Reducing Excessive Foot Traffic In The Surgical Room To Minimize The Risk Of Surgical Site Infections, Christopher D. Pobre
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: In 2021, a perioperative unit experienced 21 different surgical site infections (SSIs). SSIs are associated with increased medical complications and financial costs. One risk factor for SSIs is the increased or excessive operating room (OR) foot traffic, which increases airborne contaminants within the OR.
Context: A seven-room operating department performing 5,800 surgical procedures annually. The unit specializes in general, elective, and emergent procedures for the adult population predominately in the East Bay Area. A diverse mix of surgical procedures was observed throughout this project.
Assessment: A microsystem assessment was conducted to determine the causes and patterns that lead to …
Supporting The Nursing Workforce And Addressing The Phenomena Of Nursing Burnout With Evidence-Based Mental Health Interventions, Kelly Leung
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Burnout within healthcare has been an existing phenomenon, contributing to increased hospital staff turnover rates and the nationwide nursing shortage. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this issue leading to a decrease in the quality of patient care, nurse satisfaction, and organizational financial security.
Context: At a South Bay Area public healthcare system, staff were displaced throughout the community to support the overflow of COVID-19 patients at ambulatory clinics. Due to the nature of COVID-19, this healthcare system has experienced barriers in maintaining available staff for the demand of work. Studies indicate that signs of increased stress and burnout observed …
