Introduction Surgical site infections (SSI) account for 20% of all healthcare associated infections with an estimated yearly cost of $3.3 billion in the US alone (1). Cefazolin (Ancef) is a commonly used prophylactic antibiotic in orthopaedic surgery and has been shown to reduce SSI compared to other antibiotics, but potential cross-reactivity in patients with a penicillin allergy (PA) leads to concerns regarding the safety of cefazolin administration. This study evaluates the incidence of allergic reactions to cefazolin in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery with a PA. Introduction Lactic acid (LA) is a commonly used biomarker and is often indicative of severity of disease in critically ill patients. Lactic acidosis which is defined as LA > 4.0 can be divided into two categories: Type A which is the more common type is caused by systemic tissue hypoperfusion most likely due to shock and Type B which is caused by impairment of cellular metabolism and or decreased clearance of LA. An important cause of Type B lactic acidosis is medications including acetaminophen, anti-retroviral drugs, antibiotics and beta-adrenergic agonists including albuterol. Introduction: Right lower quadrant pain is a common presentation of acute appendicitis, but presentations in elderly patients may be subtle. Appendiceal obstruction is frequently caused by fecaliths; however, not all radiopaque findings in the appendix represent fecaliths. Rarely, these obstructions can mimic metallic foreign bodies on imaging, complicating interpretation and management. This case highlights an unusual radiologic presentation of appendiceal obstruction with metallic appearance, underscoring the importance of careful image analysis in atypical cases of appendicitis.

CONTEXT: The WHO Classification of Tumors of the Digestive System (2019) categorizes WDPanNETs as grade 1 (G1), grade 2 (G2) or grade 3 (G3) by mitotic count and proliferative index (KI67). INTRODUCTION Both lupus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis can affect any organ and can present with non-specific multi-organ involvement. In a patient with lupus, it may be difficult to distinguish between a lupus flare and a mycobacterial infection.

CASE A 28-year-old female with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), (anti-Smith and ds-DNA positive), presented with knee swelling, chest and abdominal pain. She had elevated inflammatory markers, hyperkalemia with AKI. CT chest showed bilateral lung micronodules and patchy opacity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping healthcare, yet its integration into nutrition and dietetics remains underexplored. This study investigates the adoption, perceptions, and opportunities related to AI technologies among Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) in the United States. Our survey was opened in April 2025 and is still ongoing, having gathered responses from over 70 RDNs. Findings reveal that while 58% of RDNs report some familiarity with AI, only 13% consider themselves very or extremely familiar. Attitudes toward AI are generally positive, with 56% viewing AI’s impact on dietetics as positive and 70% believing it could at least moderately improve patient outcomes. …

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) affects 40% of women and potentially decreases their quality of life. Currently, the primary treatment for HSDD is Flibanserin, which is a serotonergic agonist and an antidepressant. However, the limited efficacy of Flibanserin encourages the exploration of the utilization of traditional drugs such as Withania somnifera, otherwise known as Ashwagandha, as an alternative treatment for HSDD. Minimal studies examine ayurvedic medications or the symptoms of illnesses that traditional Western medicines are unable to treat. Chronic opioid therapy is widely used for managing persistent pain, yet its long-term efficacy is questionable and often associated with adverse outcomes such as opioid misuse and dependence. This study investigated whether central sensitization (CS), a condition of heightened neural response to pain stimuli, better predicts opioid-related outcomes compared to self-reported pain severity. Among adults with chronic pain currently using long-term opioid therapy, participants completed measures assessing CS, pain severity, and opioid-related outcomes including readiness and confidence to change opioid use, misuse, and dependence. In the two studies that I participated in, a behavioral economic demand curve and choice procedure, we assessed whether two alpha-2 adrenergic agonists (i.e., xylazine, clonidine, and lofexidine) altered fentanyl reinforcement in male and female sprague dawley rats. We hypothesized that xylazine and clonidine would enhance fentanyl reinforcement in a proportion-dependent manner. Lofexidine interactions with fentanyl were more difficult to predict. The data showed that xylazine did not enhance fentanyl reinforcement. Furthermore, these results were consistent with those of clonidine and lofexidine. In opposition to xylazine, clonidine and lofexidine are approved for human use for antinociception, reduction of blood pressure, …

This dissertation examines the quality of life among Arab-American breast cancer survivors, with a particular emphasis on dietary practices, physical activity, and mental health. Despite increasing survivorship rates in this population, there remains a significant gap in the literature addressing their unique post-treatment experiences and needs. Employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, this study integrates quantitative survey data and qualitative narrative interviews to assess adherence to health behavior guidelines and to identify culturally specific barriers and facilitators to well-being. Quantitative findings indicated suboptimal adherence to recommended dietary and physical activity guidelines and highlighted prevalent psychological distress among participants. Thematic analysis …
