Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Retail value of wholesale meat cuts is influenced by quality and the proportion of lean, fat and bone. Wholesale cuts vary widely in value; for example, loins and ribs sell for more than rounds, rounds more than chucks, and chucks more than flanks, plates, or briskets. This value difference has prompted many attempts to find breeding and feeding systems that will increase the proportion of high-priced cuts.

Results shown here characterize the composition of carcass wholesale cuts from 14 breed combinations that were part of a cattle germ plasm evaluation program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, …

Maxillary Periapical Actinomycosis: A Case With An Unusual Roentgenographic Appearance, Danny R. Sawyer, Dennis G. Page Jan 1978

Maxillary Periapical Actinomycosis: A Case With An Unusual Roentgenographic Appearance, Danny R. Sawyer, Dennis G. Page

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Actinomycosis was once a fairly common disease and one that has a long history. “It was undoubtedly observed early in the 19th Century, as actinomycotic lesions were described erroneously in 1826 by LeBlanc as osteosarcomas and later in the 1800s Bollinger (1876) first recognized it as a specific entity which he named ‘lumpy jaw.’” The most frequent clinical form of actinomycosis is the cervicofacial type which is seen in 60% of reported cases, the other forms being abdominal (20%), pulmonary (15%) and cutaneous (5%). Young adult males are most frequently affected with actinomycosis. The actinomycetes, the so-called “higher” bacteria, are …

Glomerulonephritis, William F. Falls Jr. Jan 1978

Glomerulonephritis, William F. Falls Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this paper the histologic picture of the most common disorders usually classified under the heading of glomerulonephritis will be reviewed, and the subject of angiitis will be briefly addressed. A special effort will be made to relate renal biopsy findings to the immunologically mediated pathogenetic process which is thought to be operative in each case. Where it seems appropriate, a few comments will also be made on clinical and pathological correlations. The specific entities to be covered include: diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis; focal proliferative glomerulonephritis; membranous glomerulonephritis; antibasement membrane antibody disease; rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (crescentic disease); membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis; lipoid nephrosis …

The Influence Of Isotonic And Isokinetic Weight Training On Vertical Jumping Proficiency, Jeffrey Thomas Spielman Jan 1978

The Influence Of Isotonic And Isokinetic Weight Training On Vertical Jumping Proficiency, Jeffrey Thomas Spielman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of isotonic and isokinetic weight training on vertical jumping proficiency as measured by a modified vertical jump. The subjects were college students enrolled in the Fitness and Lifetime Activities Program at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. Isotonic and isokinetic training were assigned to the two experimental groups with the third group serving as controls. Training for the experimental groups consisted of isotonic circuit training on a Universal weight machine and isokinetic training on a Leaper machine. Data analysis included a reliability and reproducibility assessment, and a one-way …

Taste-Masking: Function Of Exaggerated Prandial Drinking In Desalivate Mice, Richard C. Lewis Jan 1978

Taste-Masking: Function Of Exaggerated Prandial Drinking In Desalivate Mice, Richard C. Lewis

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Taste thresholds for the bitter compound sucrose octaacetate (SOA) were elevated by desalivation in mice. Thresholds were determined for control and experimental animals both before and after ligation of all salivary ducts. There was a significant increase in SOA thresholds in the desalivate mice, and the pre- to post-operative differences in threshold between the control and experimental groups were significant. The altered response to SOA by desalivate mice is shown to be due to the assumption of a prandial pattern of drinking as a result of desalivation. This conclusion is based on experiments with wet mash which failed to show …

Relationship Of Auditory Short-Term Memory And Articulation Ability Of Eight-Year-Olds, Winona Eugenia Hoffinger

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the relationship of auditory short-term memory and articulation ability of eight-year-old children to determine if a relationship existed between auditory short-term memory ability and articulation ability. The specific question posed was: Is there a statistically significant difference in the auditory short-term memory ability of eight-year-olds with three or more phoneme errors and eight-year-olds with no phoneme errors?
