Maternal Perception Of The Neonate, Linda Bertucci
Maternal Perception Of The Neonate, Linda Bertucci
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the maternal perception of the neonate in two groups of patients. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure maternal perception. The Inventory was modified by the researcher for use with both primiparae and multiparae. The control group consisted of fifteen mothers receiving traditional postpartum care in the hospital setting. The study group was composed of fifteen mothers who, prior to delivery, chose to participate in an early discharge program. In the early discharge program the patient and her newborn returned home twelve to twenty-four hours after delivery with home follow-up …
The Berrigans At Catonsville: A Case Study In Symbolic Behavior As Rhetoric, Susan Baker
The Berrigans At Catonsville: A Case Study In Symbolic Behavior As Rhetoric, Susan Baker
Dissertations and Theses
In May of 1968, Father Daniel Berrigan, a Jesuit priest, and his brother, Father Philip Berrigan, a Josephite priest, and seven others, entered the draft board offices in Catonsville, Maryland where they removed 378 draft files and burned them with homemade napalm.
This paper examines that event as a case study in symbolic behavior as rhetoric. In doing so, the author first seeks a definition of rhetoric, and a definition of symbolic behavior. Background material, both on the Berrigans, and on symbolic behavior as rhetoric is provided.
The major portion of the paper deals with the analysis of the event …
The Use Of Discrediting Labels In The Maintenance Of Socially Constructed Reality, Nathan Church
The Use Of Discrediting Labels In The Maintenance Of Socially Constructed Reality, Nathan Church
Dissertations and Theses
Over the past two decades an increasing number of theorists and practitioners have called for a thorough rethinking of the underlying assumptions of the concept of rrental illness and the traditional psychiatric nodes of responding to mental disorders. The work of this group of writers has come to be referred to as the "antipsychiatry" literature. The insights of this perspective center largely about a rejection of those theories and methods of treatment that are based upon the medical model. Many writers point to the use of traditional psychiatric practice as an oppressive instrument of social control. While much of this …
Mercury Strain Gauge Assessment Of Lung Volume Partitions During Speech, Michael Susca
Mercury Strain Gauge Assessment Of Lung Volume Partitions During Speech, Michael Susca
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
The primary purpose of this study was to see if the mercury strain gauge could be used to assess lung volume partitions from chest wall motions. The air supply within any given lung volume provides the basic foundation upon which speech respiratory events rest. By assessing lung volumes in speech, the speech clinician is aided in the diagnosis and treatment of inappropriate uses of speech respiration. Although lung volumes have been assessed by a variety of instrumentation, only the respirometer has been widely used in speech physiology research. The major disadvantages of the respirometer over the mercury strain gauge are: …
An Examination Of The Clinical Efficiency Of Three Indexes Of Functional Hearing Loss, Debra Jane Giomi
An Examination Of The Clinical Efficiency Of Three Indexes Of Functional Hearing Loss, Debra Jane Giomi
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
In an investigation of the efficiency of typical Type V criteria (Rintelmann and Harford, 1967), atypical Type V criteria (Rotondi, 1976), and LOT-Bekesy audiometry (Rattler, 1970), Rotondi (1976) found atypical Type V Bekesy criteria to be the most efficient in the detection of functionality. Increasing the attenuation rate and sweep speed, and reducing the sweep frequency range employed by Rotondi (1976) reduces total bilateral Bekesy testing time from 24 to eight minutes, still allowing for application of atypical and typical Type V criteria. It was one objective of this study to determine if a clinically significant change was effected on …

The Role Of The Female Mental Health Professional In A Male Correctional Setting, Cheryl E. Biemer
The Role Of The Female Mental Health Professional In A Male Correctional Setting, Cheryl E. Biemer
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
There are increasing numbers of women psychologists and other professionals working within predominately male correctional settings. One finds, however, nothing in the literature on how they are viewed by the system or what it is like to be a woman working within this traditionally male dominated sphere. The dearth of written material on the subject became apparent in a search through the National Clearinghouse of Mental Health and the Criminal Justice Reference Service. The Psychological Abstracts, Social Science Citation Index and the Criminology Index also have no references that shed any light on this issue. There is one particularly good …

A Perspective On The Psychotherapist's Response To The Women's Movement, Harold S. Bernard
A Perspective On The Psychotherapist's Response To The Women's Movement, Harold S. Bernard
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The women's movement constitutes one of the most powerful sociological phenomena of modern times. Like any important movement, it has elicited reactions from every stratum within our society. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the response to the women's movement on the part of women, men, and man-woman relationships. It will then describe in detail an actual clinical case in which the issues involved were directly related to the concerns addressed by the women's movement, and it will offer a recommended attitudinal stance on the part of the psychotherapist to such concerns.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine creativity in dental hygiene students, dental hygiene educators, and dental hygiene practitioners.
Torrance's creativity test, What Kind of Person Are You?, was used to measure creativity in a convenience sample of 231 subjects. Data were organized according to ex post facto research design utilizing educational and occupational status as the non-manipulated independent ,, variables, and What Kind of Person Are You? creativity scores as the dependent variables. The statistical tests, analysis of variance and chi-square were employed to analyze data for significant differences between and among the mean scores of all sample …
Demonstration Of Unique Mycelial Components In Candida Albicans, David Jon Mancuso
Demonstration Of Unique Mycelial Components In Candida Albicans, David Jon Mancuso
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Mycelial (M) and blastopore (B) cell homogenates of Candida albicans strain BJ85 were compared to detect and recover unique M components. Qualitative differences in the protein and lipid content of Mand B homogenates were suggested by discontinuous polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (DPAGE). In addition, a quantitative and possibly qualitative shift in the protein content during germ tube formation was implied by DPAGE. Unique M components were detected using both DPAGE and immunoelectrophoretic (IE) techniques. One unique M component by DPAGE, four by IE, and two by combined DPAGE and IE techniques were suggested. Of these three methods, only DPAGE and the …

Three Linked Enzyme Loci In Fishes: Implications In The Evolution Of Vertebrate Chromosomes, D C Morizot, D A Wright, M J Siciliano
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
A three-point linkage group comprised of loci coding for adenosine deaminase (ADA), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and 6-phospho-gluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) is described in fish of the genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae). The alleles at loci in this group were shown to assort independently from the alleles at three other loci--isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2, and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 1. Alleles at the latter three loci also assort independently from each other. Data were obtained by observing the segregation of electrophoretically variant alleles in reciprocal backcross hybrids derived from crosses between either X. helleri guentheri or X. h. strigatus and X. maculatus. The linkage component …
Depression And Physical Rehabilitation, Mary Jo Deegan
Depression And Physical Rehabilitation, Mary Jo Deegan
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Depression is often expected in our society during physical rehabilitation. This and similar expectations structure the experience of a physical disability. Contradictions in expectations and demands by providers to conform to this paradigm create barriers in the rehabilitation process. Changes in the physical rehabilitation paradigm are briefly suggested.

The Divorce Experience And Its Impact On The Father-Child Relationship, Susan Coffman, Ellen Lane, Erika Worth
Dissertations and Theses
This project began with the notion that an in-depth examination of perceived changes in the parent-child relationship as reported by the noncustodial father would be both beneficial to mental health professionals as well as to paraprofessional groups and organizations working with divorced fathers. The authors were aware of much related research pertaining to the children of divorced parents and also the plight of divorced mothers, but felt there to be a lack of data concerning the noncustodial father and thus identified this area as an important mental health concern.
