Pedometer Recorded Activity And Self-Report As Measures Of Treatment Outcome In Primary Dysmenorrhea: Relationship To Premenstrual Syndrome, Vicki Link Trejbal

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was threefold: first, to determine if a pedometer measure of motor activity could be used as one indicator of the degree of dysmenorrhea present in an individual; second, to determine the degree, if any, of the relationship present between the measure and self-report measures of symptomatology used in a modified Daily Symptom Rating Scale; and third, to assess the effects of naproxen sodium and a placebo on the self-report measures and the behavioral measure of symptomatology. Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the main and interaction effects of two oral hygiene regimens and periodontal instrumentation on the periodontal health status of subjects between the ages of 18 and 70 over a two-month period. The sample consisted of 16 subjects with moderate periodontitis. A split-mouth design was used; subjects brushed with fluoridated toothpaste on one side of the mouth and brushed with a hydrogen peroxide-sodium bicarbonate paste on the contralateral side. For each treatment, scaling and root planing were randomly assigned to one arch. At two-week intervals, the periodontal health status was measured using the …

The Frequency Of Vestibular Disorders In Developmentally Delayed Preschoolers With Otitis Media., Roseann C Schaaf

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

This study investigated the frequency of vestibular disorders in developmentally disabled preschoolers who did and who did not have a history of otitis media. Fifteen children with a history of otitis media and fifteen children with no history of otitis media were given two tests for vestibular functioning: the Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test (SCPNT) and the Lateral Labyrinthine Righting Reaction (LLRR), acting on the head. The scores on these tests were dichotomized, and a correlation between these two tests as measures of vestibular function was obtained. Because this correlation did not reach a satisfactory level, two a satisfactory level, …

The Strange Story Of Jay Mclean, The Discoverer Of Heparin, Conrad R. Lam

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Since 1939, the use of heparin has become widespread in the prevention of postoperative thrombosis and embolism and is the basis for modern open-heart surgery. What is not generally known is the story of Jay McLean, the second-year medical student at Johns Hopkins who is given credit for the original discovery. McLean's first scientific publication concerning the use of heparin does not contain the word "heparin," and not until 25 years later did McLean publish a short paper about heparin. Some personal letters and other research have indicated a checkered career. He was trained as a surgeon in the Halsted …

Central Pontine Myelinolysis In A Patient With Adrenal Insufficiency, John E. Brunner Mar 1985

Central Pontine Myelinolysis In A Patient With Adrenal Insufficiency, John E. Brunner

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Central pontine myelinolysis is a demyelinating process that has occurred in association with rapid correction of hyponatremia. Presented here is the case of a patient who had adrenal insufficiency and who experienced signs of central pontine myelinolysis after rapid correction of severe hyponatremia (28 mEq/L of sodium administered in the first 24 hours, initial serum sodium level 97mEq/L). Sustained hyponatremia and the use of intravenous contrast material after hyponatremia correction are discussed as possible risk factors in the development of central pontine myelinolysis.
