An Investigation Of Psychological Disorders In Hearing Impaired Populations, Sandra A. Keiser Apr 1985

An Investigation Of Psychological Disorders In Hearing Impaired Populations, Sandra A. Keiser

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Research into deaf persons' personal and intrafamily patterns began in the 1950s. This research, however, focused on the "problems of the deaf" rather than looking deeper. This has caused a focus in the literature on problems rather than looking into similarities between deaf and hearing people, there would have been different results. This thesis looks to answer several questions: What are the factors tobe considered when doing research on deaf populations? Are there differences in children's social and emotional development between the two populations? Do deaf children exhibit emotional or behavioral disorders different in type or frequency than comparable hearing …

A Comparative Study Of Alcoholic And Nonalcoholic Women's Perception Of Their Relationship With Their Father, Judith A. Hinga Apr 1985

A Comparative Study Of Alcoholic And Nonalcoholic Women's Perception Of Their Relationship With Their Father, Judith A. Hinga

Dissertations

The literature review outlined the historical perspectives impacting current thinking about the role fathers play in child development. Theories of child development saw the mother as the important parent and all but ignored the father. Later researchers studied the father-daughter relationship and found that the paternal relationship is also an important factor in a female's personality development.

Theories of female alcoholism reviewed in this study indicate that there is a relationship between sex-role conflict and female alcoholism. Existing data show that the family of origin of female alcoholics is characterized by a cold, rejecting mother and a warm, accepting father. …

The Use Of Guided Imagery And Progressive Relaxation In Treating Hemodialysis Patients For Dietary Compliance, James B. Morrissey Apr 1985

The Use Of Guided Imagery And Progressive Relaxation In Treating Hemodialysis Patients For Dietary Compliance, James B. Morrissey

Dissertations

Studies have confirmed that many hemodialysis patients experience numerous psychological difficulties as a result of their physical illness. One behavioral manifestation of these psychological states is noncompliance to imposed dietary restrictions. In spite of life threatening implications, many hemodialysis patients find it very difficult to maintain dietary compliance.

Recently, guided imagery and progressive relaxation have been used as methods to assist clients to overcome negative psychological states. In most cases, the treatments are adjunctive to on-going counseling or psychotherapy. The purpose of this investigation was to test the idea that guided imagery and progressive relaxation alone can be successfully used …

Mmpi Characteristics Of Vietnam Combat Veterans Diagnosed As Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Requesting Outpatient Mental Health Counseling, Thomas M. Spahn

Dissertations

Throughout the history of warfare, the most difficult casualty to identify has been the emotionally wounded. Although policy changes were made to reduce the effects of psychiatric casualties, a number of Vietnam combat veterans continue to experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The purpose of this research was to survey the emotional conflicts of Vietnam combat veterans who were diagnosed as experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Subjects (n = 28) were voluntary outpatient clients of a V.A. Mental Health clinic who were free of psychiatric, substance abuse, or organic problems. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was used, and analyses included the …

An Ecological Study Of Coaching Behaviors And Corresponding Player Performance And Perception And Performance For The Sport Of Collegiate Ice Hockey, Joseph M. Kalinowski Apr 1985

An Ecological Study Of Coaching Behaviors And Corresponding Player Performance And Perception And Performance For The Sport Of Collegiate Ice Hockey, Joseph M. Kalinowski

Dissertations

This study examined the methodological feasibility of administering a behavioral assessment system on coaching behaviors under actual collegiate hockey game conditions. The observation system was found to be feasible and accurate with a .866 percentage of inter-rater agreement across all 10 behavior categories coded over 300 reliability observation minutes. The predominant coaching behaviors observed over 11 complete games were found to be general technical instruction (44.3%), general encouragement (21.4%), and organization (14.2%). Reinforcement (4.51%) and punishment (3.56%) coaching behavior rates were found to be unexpectedly low. Reinforcement was found to be inversely related to punishment but positively related to encouragement. …

Physiologic Responses To Maximal Exercise On A Treadmill, Monarch Bicycle Ergometer And Schwinn Air-Dyne Ergometer, Elaine Jason Naegele

Masters Theses

The study was conducted to determine which of three exercise modes would elicit the highest values for maximal oxygen uptake and maximal heart rate. Maximal graded exercise tests were performed by 20 healthy adults, ten women and ten men. Five of the women and five of the men were trained and the remaining ten were untrained. Each subject used, in a random order: (a) a motorized treadmill, (b) a Monarch bicycle ergometer, and (c) a Schwinn Air-Dyne ergometer. For each test, subjects were encouraged to complete successively harder workload stages, until they reached volitional exhaustion or localized muscle fatigue.

The Effects Of Religious Affiliation And Attendance On Illicit Sexual Behavior And Substance Abuse, Thomas W. Zane Apr 1985

The Effects Of Religious Affiliation And Attendance On Illicit Sexual Behavior And Substance Abuse, Thomas W. Zane

Theses and Dissertations

A sample of 7724 college students in Washington and Utah was selected to study the relationships of religious activity and religious affiliation to illicit sexual behaviors, use of marijuana, and getting drunk. For all religious affiliations (except for the Jews), there were significant correlations between church activity and the measured illicit behaviors. LDS rates of behavior were significantly lower at <.001 for the five illicit behaviors. Two factor analyses were calculated to determine which sexual behaviors would load on a single factor and which substances would load on another factor. Extramarital coitus, heavy petting, and passionate kissing formed the first "sexual" factor. The use of beer, liquor, and marijuana combined with the behavior getting drunk to form the "substance-abuse" factor. A canonical analysis reported a moderate relationship with a canonical coefficient of .534 between the two factors. A discriminant analysis based on each subjects' religious affiliation and activity level yielded a 70-80 percent correct classification percentage.

Pedometer Recorded Activity And Self-Report As Measures Of Treatment Outcome In Primary Dysmenorrhea: Relationship To Premenstrual Syndrome, Vicki Link Trejbal

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was threefold: first, to determine if a pedometer measure of motor activity could be used as one indicator of the degree of dysmenorrhea present in an individual; second, to determine the degree, if any, of the relationship present between the measure and self-report measures of symptomatology used in a modified Daily Symptom Rating Scale; and third, to assess the effects of naproxen sodium and a placebo on the self-report measures and the behavioral measure of symptomatology. Three subjects wore pedometers and completed modified Daily Symptom Rating Scale forms throughout the study. Each subject showed treatment …

Teaching Mentally Retarded Adults How To Shop For Personal Care Items On A Budget, Daniel Lee Cole

Masters Theses

Three ambulatory mildly mentally retarded adults (2 males, 1 female) were trained to independently shop for personal care items needed and to determine and select items within a $2.00 budget. A task analysis yielded 30 target behaviors. In training correct responses received descriptive praise and smiles, while incorrect responses received corrective feedback, prompts, and/or modeling. A laminated card was used which had typed on it the prices $1.00 to $1.89. Subjects were taught they could afford items whose prices could be matched to one on the card. A multiple baseline across subjects research design was employed. Subjects improved to performing …

The sample consisted of 16 subjects with moderate periodontitis. A split-mouth design was used; subjects brushed with fluoridated toothpaste on one side of the mouth and brushed with a hydrogen peroxide-sodium bicarbonate paste on the contralateral side. For each treatment, scaling and root planing were randomly assigned to one arch. At two-week intervals, the periodontal health status was measured using the …

The Frequency Of Vestibular Disorders In Developmentally Delayed Preschoolers With Otitis Media., Roseann C Schaaf Apr 1985

The Frequency Of Vestibular Disorders In Developmentally Delayed Preschoolers With Otitis Media., Roseann C Schaaf

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

This study investigated the frequency of vestibular disorders in developmentally disabled preschoolers who did and who did not have a history of otitis media. Fifteen children with a history of otitis media and fifteen children with no history of otitis media were given two tests for vestibular functioning: the Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test (SCPNT) and the Lateral Labyrinthine Righting Reaction (LLRR), acting on the head. The scores on these tests were dichotomized, and a correlation between these two tests as measures of vestibular function was obtained. Because this correlation did not reach a satisfactory level, two a satisfactory level, …
