Death Becomes Us: The Consumptive Body In Nineteenth-Century Gothic Literature, Jennifer Marie Mcmahon
All NMU Master's Theses
This thesis examines the impacts of nineteenth-century tuberculosis epidemics on gothic literature published between 1842 and 1872. In this period of time, tuberculosis was the leading cause of death in the United States and in Europe, killing an estimated one in seven people. Using theoretical lenses of psychoanalysis and material ecocriticism, this project considers borders between material bodies—specifically those between bacterial agents and humans—to be illusory and socially constructed. The first chapter focuses on the ways in which representations of tuberculosis, and its associated entanglement with the environment, appear in the work of two authors from the United States: Edgar …

Interprofessional education (IPE) is a forward-looking strategy in healthcare education that unites students and professionals from various disciplines to enhance interprofessional collaboration (IPC). IPE is designed to prepare future health and social care professionals to navigate and address the complexities of modern healthcare systems. In the Philippines, despite being a developing country with a fragmented healthcare system, there have been efforts over the last 15 to 20 years to introduce and institutionalize IPE and IPC in both higher education and healthcare settings. However, significant challenges persist, including the dominance of medical professionals, inadequate regulatory mechanisms, and a lack of strong …

In cases where Child Abuse Pediatricians (CAPs) diagnose abusive head trauma (AHT) in young children, some factors surrounding the diagnosis have been challenged including causative shaking, necessity of external signs of impact, or concomitant suspicious injuries. Evaluation of CAP diagnoses in children with subdural hemorrhage (SDH) can give insight into factors related to the frequency of abusive head trauma (AHT) diagnoses. Additionally, characterization of those with SDH+CSI without evidence of impact may inform controversies around AHT diagnoses. Objective We aim to compare CAP diagnoses in subjects with SDH across clinical presentations and in the context of evidence of head impact. …

Steroid receptors are ligand-induced transcription factors that have broad functions among all living animal species, ranging from control of sex differences, body weight, stress responses, and many others. Their binding to coregulator proteins is regulated by corepressors and coactivators that interchange upon stimulation with a ligand. Coregulator proteins are an imperative and understudied aspect of steroid receptor signaling. Here, we discuss steroid receptor basics from protein domain structures that allow them to interact with coregulators and other proteins, their essential functions as transcription factors, and other elemental protein–protein interactions. We deliberate about the mechanisms that coregulators control in steroid receptor …

Lysyl hydroxylase 2 (LH2) is highly expressed in multiple tumor types and accelerates disease progression by hydroxylating lysine residues on fibrillar collagen telopeptides to generate stable collagen cross links in tumor stroma. Here, we show that a galactosylhydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase (GGT) domain on LH2 modified type-VI collagen (Col6) to promote lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) growth and metastasis. In tumors generated by LUAD cells lacking LH2 GGT domain activity, stroma was less stiff, and stable types of collagen cross links were reduced. Mass spectrometric analysis of total and glycosylated peptides in parental and GGT-inactive tumor samples identified Col6 chain α3 (Col6a3), a component …

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically altered the way clinical research is conducted through a widespread adoption of telemedicine practices to continue clinical trial procedures during peak periods of global COVID-19 spread. Using telehealth/telemedicine services allows researchers to conduct “decentralized clinical trials”, or DCTs, for all or portions of study protocol procedures while maintaining safety measures implemented for pandemic control. However, research sites are hesitant to adopt DCT policies due to concerns around digital health technology, data safety and quality, and limited information in the literature specifically assessing telemedicine use for pediatric clinical research via DCTs or how equipped pediatric research sites …
Unveiling The Dynamics Of Intersectional Aging: A Qualitative Exploration Of Aging And Social Participation Among Transgender Older Adults, Tiff Cunin
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
For more than thirty years, extensive research has focused on understanding and supporting healthy aging among older adults in the United States. This research has emphasized the importance of community engagement, access to resources, and interpersonal relationships among the broader older adult population, However, it has largely overlooked how transgender older adults experience aging and how those experiences shape their social participation. Additionally, understanding how intersecting marginalized identities—such as race and transgender identity—affect social participation is essential.
This study employed a qualitative multiple case study design to explore the experiences transgender older adults have while aging and how those experiences …

Integrating Mental Health And Substance Use Treatment Using The Integrated Care Model: Policy Analysis, Victoria Reis
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Purpose of Statement
Policy analysis evaluates the integration of mental health services into substance use treatment, particularly for co-occurring disorders. It identifies gaps in existing policies and offers recommendations to enhance access, coordination, and effectiveness of integrated care.
Background
Integrating mental health services is crucial due to the high prevalence of co-occurring disorders. However, the fragmented treatment landscape leads to poor patient outcomes and rising healthcare costs. Policies such as the 21st Century Cures Act and Texas House Bill 4 provide a framework for improvement, but significant gaps hinder effective integrated care.
Methodology
Using the Bardach Policy Analysis Framework, this …
