Context: Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is a major cause of congenital hypopituitarism and is known to be associated with overweight and obesity in up to 44% of children. Given the role of the hypothalamus in hormonal regulation, we sought to assess the association of resting energy expenditure (REE), appetite and physical activity with SOD. Objective: To characterize REE and other metabolic features in patients with SOD and evaluate relationships with elevated body mass index (BMI). Methods: Children with SOD above 5 years of age attending Perth Children's Hospital participated. A CosMED Q-NRG indirect calorimeter was used to calculate mean measure REE …

Autologous Blood Pleurodesis Through An Indwelling Pleural Catheter For The Management Of Prolonged Air Leak In A Malignant Hydropneumothorax, Vanessa Wong, Sathya Balaguruswamy, Bapti Roy
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The British Thoracic Society guidelines recommend a surgical opinion in cases of prolonged air leak or failure of lung re-expansion after 3–5 days. The management of prolonged air leak in non-surgical candidates often proves to be more challenging, with no expert consensus guidelines on treatment options. There is a paucity of data for the treatment of patients with a prolonged air leak in the setting of a hydropneumothorax, who are not suitable surgical candidates. We present the case of a novel treatment approach for an 89-year-old male with a symptomatic, large malignant pleural effusion treated initially with a routine chest …

Deceased donor kidney allocation relies on HLA compatibility at the antigen level, as optimal matching reduces the risk of acute rejection. Whether HLA allele-level mismatches improve, the prediction of acute rejection after transplantation remains unclear. Using data from the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) from 2017 to 2020, HLA antigenic and allelic mismatches between recipients and deceased donors were calculated with imputation of two-field allelic equivalents undertaken where required. The discordance between antigen and allele mismatches was calculated, and oblique random survival forest models were used to predict acute rejection. Predictive performance of antigen (HLA-A, -B, …

Opportunistic Measurement Of Sagittal Abdominal Diameter With Bone Densitometry Predicts Death And Cardiovascular Events, William D. Leslie, Fatima Zarzour, Lisa M. Lix, Neil Binkley, Joshua R. Lewis, John T. Schousboe
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Supine sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), also known as abdominal height, has been proposed as a simple measure for assessing abdominal adiposity. We aimed to determine whether SAD from DXA performed for osteoporosis assessment predicts major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) using the population-based DXA registry for the Province of Manitoba, Canada. The study population comprised 72 974 individuals aged 40 yr and older with baseline DXA assessment between February 1999 and March 2018. Incident MACE (composite of all-cause mortality, acute myocardial infarction [MI], non-hemorrhagic stroke) was ascertained from linked healthcare databases. During mean 8.4 yr follow-up (611 862 person-years), 14 457 …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: The age of people who inject drugs appears to be increasing in some high-income countries. We aimed to explore trends in the age of people injecting and recently starting to inject drugs in Australia, and to model incidence of initiation over time. Methods: We obtained data from the Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS) and the Australian Needle Syringe Program Survey (ANSPS), which comprise annual cross-sectional surveys with people who inject drugs (2000–2019). Outcome measures were current age, age of initiation, and time since initiation (both surveys), and drug first injected (IDRS only). We estimated time trends in age using …

Background and Objectives: Screening for elder abuse can improve detection, but many health providers lack the necessary skills and confidence. To address this, training for health providers on elder abuse screening was codesigned as part of a trial aimed at improving elder abuse detection and response. Research Design and Methods: Between March and April 2023, 7 health providers and 10 older people and family carers participated in 2 national Australian online codesign workshops. Using the World Café method, discussions focused on what knowledge and skills health providers needed for screening; clinical and social issues affecting screening and referral; and support …

PURPOSE: To characterize the relationship between academic productivity, as defined by the h-index, and industry payments for fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeons in faculty positions at sports medicine fellowships.
METHODS: The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine fellowship directory was used to create a comprehensive list of all fellowship programs nationwide. Fellowship websites were then reviewed to generate a list of the teaching faculty associated with each program. Total nonresearch lifetime earnings were obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services website. Academic productivity of each fellowship faculty was assessed via the h-index. Frequency counts and other descriptive statistic measures …

Philippine Journal of Physical Therapy
Introduction: Orthopedic manual physical therapy (OMPT) is renowned for its positive biophysical and psychosocial effects, making it an important tool in clinical practice. Although OMPT has long been a stable intervention used in developed countries, its adoption has spiked in developing countries, including the Philippines. Despite this progress, no comprehensive study has explored the factors that may hinder or enable Filipino physical therapists (PTs) from utilizing OMPT into their daily clinical practice. The aim of this study was to conduct a thorough behavioral analysis to determine Filipino PTs' capabilities, opportunities, and motivations for using orthopedic manual therapy in their clinical …

The disparity between physicians' preparedness to treat people with disabilities (PWD) and the prevalence of disabilities is a critical healthcare issue. The 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System reported that over 25% of U.S. adults have a disability, yet many healthcare providers feel unprepared. A poll found that only 40.7% of 714 physicians were confident in providing quality care to PWD, while 61% of 600 surveyed PWD indicated that their providers needed more training. Additionally, only 36% of medical schools included disability education in their curricula, often focusing on brief simulations rather than immersive experiences. To effectively address the diverse …

As a first-year medical student on the osteopathic path, my art is a reflection of my journey to balance creativity and the principles of holistic care. Osteopathic medicine’s focus on treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—aligns closely with my approach to art, which aims to capture the connections between humanity, healing, and empathy.
Through my work, I explore themes of care, connection, and the values I hope to uphold as a future physician. Whether it’s through symbolic imagery or simple, heartfelt compositions, my art reflects the importance of compassion and the human connection in both medicine and life.

This essay is built off of a paper I wrote in a college global health course on culture and mental illness. I have always been fascinated by cultural interpretations of illness & believe that as a future physician, it is my responsibility to educate myself and others on the complex interplay between religious ideologies & recognition/management of biological disease in order to provide appropriate patient-centered care.

I titled this work “Layers,” symbolic of the many intricate layers to healing, just as we see the many literal layers of a landscape in this photograph. In the foreground, you are met with a firm, unforgiving boulder — almost analogous to how difficult the initial phase of healing can be, or the setbacks that may be experienced throughout a healing journey. Your eyes then drift on to find the abundance of evergreens, some vibrant and thriving, while others are in their last stages of life. Finally, the mountainous layers take shape before ascending into the sky. Just …

This painting was conceptualized after a particularly impactful patient visit. During the visit, the patient described a traumatic event in greater detail, stating that the doctor and I were the first people he had ever spoken to about the event.
I felt both honored and disheartened by this statement. I was honored that this man trusted us with this knowledge. Still, I was immensely sad that he dealt with the trauma of this event alone for decades. I believe he released some of the grief, pain, anger, fear, and hurt when he shared his burden with us, and I will …

As a hopeful pediatrician, I find my sacred oath of healing to be inspired by the radiant positivity and resilience of children. My goddaughter was not even three years old when she had her first major surgery, and I was so worried about her future recovery. Then, she was just a few hours post-op and already cracking a smile. Her innocence and purity extended to the point where she made sure that she wasn't the only one being taken care of; after all, her "baby" Julie needed to be taken care of, too.

We both tried to find a photograph that could demonstrate what our sacred oath to healing looked like. The stethoscopes symbolize this because they represent more than just a tool for auscultation, they are objects that directly connect a healthcare provider to their patient. When we place the stethoscope on our patient’s chest we listen to their heart and lung sounds and the unique vibrations and rhythms that the individual makes. This action demonstrates deep trust and responsibility for healing.
