Implementing Breast Milk Expression Education Protocol: A Quality Improvement, Brenda Balarezo
Implementing Breast Milk Expression Education Protocol: A Quality Improvement, Brenda Balarezo
DNP Projects
Significance and Background: Prematurity related complications (PRC) are the second leading cause of death for children under the age of five. Breast milk (BM) contains bio-actives that reduce PRC. However, delayed BM expression (BME) reduces BM availability. Adherence to Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative’s recommendation for BME within 6 hours in mothers of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) infants remain poor without a standardized BME protocol.
Purpose: To increase the percentage of NICU mothers initiating BME within 6 hours of birth. To educate labor and delivery nursing staff on early BME.
Methods: The Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Model for Improvement Plan-Do-Study-Act …
Dentistry And The Law: Yes, Dentists (And The Mda) Are Subject To Antitrust Law, Daniel Schulte Jd
Dentistry And The Law: Yes, Dentists (And The Mda) Are Subject To Antitrust Law, Daniel Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This legal article explains how antitrust laws apply to dentists and dental associations. It clarifies that violations occur when competitors agree to activities that unreasonably restrain competition. The article distinguishes between "per se" illegal activities (price-fixing, group boycotts, allocation of territories) and those evaluated under the "rule of reason." Specific examples of prohibited activities include agreements on fees, discount limitations, or refusals to participate with dental plans. Enforcement can come from the DOJ, FTC, state agencies, or private lawsuits, with penalties including imprisonment, fines, and treble damages.
Investigation Of The Effects Of The Peptidylarginine Deiminase Inhibitor Cl-Amidine On Apoptosis And Gene Expression In Ovarian Cancer, Victoria Walden
Investigation Of The Effects Of The Peptidylarginine Deiminase Inhibitor Cl-Amidine On Apoptosis And Gene Expression In Ovarian Cancer, Victoria Walden
Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal
Peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs) are a family of enzymatic proteins responsible for the conversion of arginine and methylarginine residues to citrulline. This conversion is important for several key cellular processes including transcriptional gene regulation. Recently, a link has been established between overexpression of a particular PAD, PAD4, and the accelerated progression of both autoimmune diseases and cancers. Ovarian cancer exhibits heightened levels of PAD4 in affected cells. High levels of PAD4 are associated with the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) that promote cancer metastasis, and downregulation of the p53 apoptotic pathway. Thus, it is important to explore inhibitors of PAD4. …

A Holistic Perspective On Pain Assessments, Focusing On The Multidimensional Measurement Of Comfort Levels: A Quantitative Analysis And Psychometric Evaluation Of The 13-Item Shortened General Comfort Questionnaire, Victoria A. Marner
Theses & Dissertations
Background: Pain is multidimensional. It is a physical, psychospiritual, environmental, and sociocultural experience (Ebrahimpour & Hoseini, 2018). Current measures of pain tend to be unidimensional, only focusing on the physical aspect of pain. The entire experience of pain may not be effectively communicated by patients or adequately controlled by interventions (e.g., analgesics, repositioning, physical therapy). Adults in pain may struggle to participate in daily activities and responsibilities. A scale encompassing all pain contexts and comfort levels could provide a more comprehensive view of the patient’s experience. Transitioning from measuring pain to measuring comfort holistically would provide patient satisfaction and improved …

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide, and childhood sarcomas such as Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) and Ewing Sarcoma (ES) are particularly aggressive with limited targeted treatment options. Despite advancements in cancer therapies, metastatic sarcomas still have a survival rate below 30%, emphasizing the need for new therapeutic targets. SOX18, a transcription factor has played a role in vascular development and endothelial differentiation, functioning as a key driver of angiogenesis. In cancer, increased SOX18 expression has been linked to dysregulated cell migration, invasion, and therapy resistance mechanisms. However, the extent to which SOX18 influences RMS and ES at the transcriptional level …

Model organisms are widely utilized in cancer research due to their ability to allow researchers to study biological processes that occur within cancer progression. One model organism that is used is the Chorioallantoic Membrane (CAM) assays. Chicken embryos are a sufficient model that are used to study processes such as angiogenesis, tumor growth, and drug effects. What makes these models useful is due to the cost efficiency, accessibility, and the increased speed the blood vessels can grow. Despite the results, it can be difficult to image the results or monitor the CAM assay. That is why Ex-ovo CAM assays have …

Posters - 2025
Repeated passive heat exposure can improve cardiovascular health outcomes. A novel infrared sauna blanket may enable home-based heat therapy, but these devices are yet understudied. By closely monitoring blood pressure, heart rate, core body temperature, and perceptual responses, it could be determined how a participant's body reacts to the infrared treatment. We found elevated cardiovascular activity in response to the sauna blanket, similar to that observed during moderate-intensity exercise. Therefore, the infrared sauna blanket may have potential for inducing long-term cardiovascular adaptations and become an accessible and costeffective way of treating/preventing chronic illness.

The human brain has more computational power than modern supercomputers by utilizing only a few signaling systems, rendering it the most efficient computational device ever created. Evolution, though not prospective, has iteratively constructed neural networks of increasing complexity that have ultimately endowed humans with extraordinary cognitive abilities. Through an evolutionary lens, there is a clear correlation between organismal sophistication and network signaling complexity Astrocytes, a non-neuronal cell that makes up approximately half the cells in the human brain, show dramatic increases in morphological and signaling complexity in higher-order species. This co-evolution is likely not coincidental but rather represents the development …

Context: Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is a major cause of congenital hypopituitarism and is known to be associated with overweight and obesity in up to 44% of children. Given the role of the hypothalamus in hormonal regulation, we sought to assess the association of resting energy expenditure (REE), appetite and physical activity with SOD. Objective: To characterize REE and other metabolic features in patients with SOD and evaluate relationships with elevated body mass index (BMI). Methods: Children with SOD above 5 years of age attending Perth Children's Hospital participated. A CosMED Q-NRG indirect calorimeter was used to calculate mean measure REE …
