Background: We previously developed a digital quality measure (dQM) of emergency presentations (EPs) in colorectal cancer (CRC) and found it to be associated with worse outcomes. Potentially avoidable EPs were common in this cohort, but identifying them required time-intensive chart reviews. We aimed to enhance the existing dQM to automate the detection of potentially avoidable EPs.

Endometriosis is a pathological condition characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial cells, leading to chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Epidemiological studies have associated exposure to dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls, particularly PCB126, with an increased risk of endometriosis. However, the underlying mechanisms of this association remain poorly understood. We utilized a surgically induced endometriosis mouse model and human endometrial cell lines to assess the impact of PCB126 on endometriosis progression. Long-read RNA sequencing is a powerful technology for transcriptomics, but low throughput and high cost pose challenges. Adaptive sampling, a feature of Oxford Nanopore Technologies, offers real-time enrichment by selectively ejecting non-target molecules. We evaluate adaptive sampling for human transcriptome analysis. Adaptive sampling modestly enriches target transcripts (1.3 × for cDNA sequencing, 1.9 × for direct RNA sequencing) while preserving gene expression and splicing profiles, but is significantly less effective than cDNA hybridization capture. Short read lengths and low sequencing quality limit performance. Adaptive sampling on direct RNA sequencing can boost target yield (~ 20%) within fixed run times, potentially …

Previous studies show that orphan nuclear receptor 4A1 (NR4A1) regulates endometriotic cell growth, survival, estrogen receptor β (ERβ), mechanistic target of rapamycin signaling and fibrosis. NR4A2 is also expressed in epithelial and stromal derived endometriotic cells, and in this study the effects of 1,1-bis(3'-indolyl)-(3,5-disubstitutedphenyl)methane (DIM-3,5) dual NR4A1/nuclear receptor 4A2 (NR4A2) ligands and knockdown of NR4A1 and NR4A2 were investigated. The dual NR4A1/2 DIM-3,5 analogs inhibited previously identified proendometriotic pathways and gene products, and they also inhibited TWIST1 and multiple markers associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Purpose: Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are common correlates of mental health problems in adolescence. However, research has yet to investigate whether IPV victimization is related to developmental changes in mental health, as well as the contributing role that TBI may play in conditioning this association. Background: Recent data have suggested that germline genetic aberrations can affect outcomes in patients with large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) treated with chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CART). The success of nanoparticle-based cancer therapeutics relies on their efficient tumor uptake and retention. Given this, improving nanoparticle localization in tumors is paramount to maximize their therapeutic potential. A common approach to achieve this is to functionalize nanoparticles with active targeting moieties that bind to specific tumor-associated receptors. Among these, arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptides have shown a potential to promote tumor accumulation by targeting the ανβ3 integrin receptor, a receptor commonly overexpressed by tumors owing to its role in promoting angiogenesis, metastasis and proliferation. The toxicological effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) have attracted considerable research interest due to their known bioaccumulation. However, time-resolved and longitudinal studies that examine in vivo bioaccumulation and clearance remain limited. Here we use Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopies to detect and track the presence of two PAHs: pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, and one PAC: 5,12-naphthacenequinone, in murine organ tissues. Effective patient communication supports health literacy, treatment compliance, and health outcomes. This study examined whether older adult orthopedic patients’ learning style modality preferences differ from general population norms and characterized their multimodal communication preference profiles to inform tailored provider–patient interactions. Using the Barsch Learning Style Inventory (BLSI), 57 English-speaking male orthopedic patients (50+ years) in a semi-rural Northern California practice were assessed. Primary learning modality distributions (n = 50 with single primary preferences) differed significantly from the BLSI theoretical norms using an exact multinomial goodness-of-fit test (p = 0.048), with fewer auditory learners and more kinesthetic learners than expected. …

Ovarian metastasis from small bowel neuroendocrine neoplasms (SBNENs) was traditionally considered rare, but more recent series have suggested a higher prevalence. This case series seeks to examine the features and outcomes of patients with neuroendocrine ovarian metastases (NOM). Female patients with histologically confirmed well-differentiated SBNENs were identified using a prospectively maintained database (2014–2024). The electronic medical record was reviewed for details of diagnosis, histopathology, biomarkers, and outcomes among patients with and without NOM. 175 patients met inclusion criteria. 35 patients (20 %) had ovarian metastasis; for this group, 31.4 % had small bowel obstruction only, 5.7 % had ureteral obstruction …

Purpose: We aimed to classify youth using a longitudinal, multidimensional construct of gender, and examine associations of gender subgroups with substance cognitions and substance use.

Methods: We used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (N=11,868 youth ages 9-10 years at baseline [2016-2018] through the year 4 follow-up [ages 13-14 years, 2020-2022]) to conduct latent class models using measures of gender identity, felt gender, gender expression, and gender non-contentedness. We used multivariable logistic regression to assess associations of gender classes with curiosity to use, intention to use, and use of alcohol, nicotine/tobacco, and cannabis, respectively, adjusting for sociodemographic factors. …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) in rodent models has been used to longitudinally image retinal changes, to define end points for more costly or time-consuming experiments, and to better understand the pathophysiology underlying OCT findings in human diseases. Previous studies demonstrated higher short-term mortality among rural compared with urban residents infected with SARS-CoV-2. However, whether this difference persists remains uncertain. This retrospective cohort study analyzed two-year post-COVID-19 mortality by rurality using the National Clinical Cohort Collaborative COVID-19 Enclave, a United States-based longitudinal electronic health record repository. We analyzed mortality among patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 between April 2020 and December 2022, with follow-up until December 2024. OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcomes of anterior and posterior surgical approaches for treating cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament across multiple spinal levels, including 1-2 spinal levels, ≥ 3 levels, or studies that operated on both spinal levels, called mixed spinal levels.

METHODS: A search strategy using pertinent keywords was employed in the MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Data on Modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) scores, radiographic outcomes, and complications were extracted. While commonly localized to the hands and feet, GA has multiple clinical variants and can mimic other dermatologic conditions, leading to diagnostic challenges. We report a rare case of GA localized to the inguinal region in a 55-year-old female initially treated empirically for candidal intertrigo without improvement. Biopsy demonstrated interstitial histiocytic infiltrates dissecting between collagen bundles with increased dermal mucin, confirming a diagnosis of interstitial GA. Background and Aims: Neighborhood social cohesion (NSC)—the degree of trust and solidarity within a community—may influence health through multiple pathways including shaping healthy norms, perception of safety, and stress. Whether NSC influences chronic liver disease (CLD) prevalence and associated mortality in the United States is unknown. Methods: Using 172,047 adults from the 2013–2018 National Health Interview Survey with linkage to National Death Index mortality data, NSC was measured using questions on help availability, accountability, trustworthiness, and connectedness among neighbors, with composite scores (4–16) categorized as minimal (4–7), low (8–10), moderate (11–13), and high (14–16). Importance: In the context of a polycrisis, which is characterized by multiple interconnected and mutually reinforcing crises, humanitarian and health needs increase. It is therefore crucial to identify social determinants impacting health and well-being of vulnerable populations to better inform appropriate interventions.
