Investigation Of Physiochemical Properties And Biocompatibility Of Amourphos Calcium Polyphosphate Hydrogel Doped With Antibiotics And Injectable Polymeric Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate Bone Cement, Yasaman Chehreghanianzabi

Wayne State University Dissertations

Amorphous calcium polyphosphate (ACPP) is an inorganic polymer ceramic. Here we use a simple method of preparing ACPP hydrogel in the presence of excess volume of water. Essentially, water availability to polyphosphate chains accelerates water molecule ingress and microstructural transformation of ACPP hydrogels. Antibiotic delivery capacity of ACPP hydrogel increases by the specific mixing and molding method, where the VCM has higher antibiotic encapsulation efficiency with the small burst release for the compressed discs. In part of this study, we investigate impact of ACPP hydrogel replacement by monomeric calcium phosphate on the quality of final product (dicalcium phosphate dihydrates (DCPD) …

Presumed Consent And Priority Allocation Systems For Organ Donation Legislation In The United States: Making The Moral Case, Anna K. Shapiro, Peter A. Depergola Ii Jan 2020

Presumed Consent And Priority Allocation Systems For Organ Donation Legislation In The United States: Making The Moral Case, Anna K. Shapiro, Peter A. Depergola Ii

Journal of Health Ethics

In recent decades, developed nations, such as the United States, have seen the gap between the demand and the supply of transplantable organs widen, despite national campaigns intended to promote donor registration. This organ shortage crisis has deprived thousands of a basic quality of life and has caused a substantial increase in the cost of alternative medical care such as dialysis. In an attempt to address the shortage, some countries have instituted explicit “opt-out” and “priority allocation” policies that operate under the principle of presumed consent and offer higher priority on transplantation lists to registered donors. This paper seeks to …

Allocation Of Resources And Health Professionals’ Burden During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Reflections On Advanced Directives, Informed Consent And Social Perception In Mexico, Karen Herrera-Ferrá, Leonardo Souza-García, Antonio Muñoz-Torres Jan 2020

Allocation Of Resources And Health Professionals’ Burden During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Reflections On Advanced Directives, Informed Consent And Social Perception In Mexico, Karen Herrera-Ferrá, Leonardo Souza-García, Antonio Muñoz-Torres

Journal of Health Ethics

One of the main problems in the COVID-19 pandemic is the insufficient availability of resources. This deficiency has resulted in emotional and moral burdens of health professionals. Decisions are having to be made as to who will live and who will die. Moreover, given the global impact of this pandemic, negative impacts are heightened in low and middle-income countries such as Mexico.

Authors focus on two issues related to, but not exclusive, to the Mexican healthcare system in an attempt to partially address scarce resources and health professionals’ burden. First, is the empowerment of patients’ autonomy through the incorporation of …

Evaluating The Impact Of Malaria Education On Student Missionaries, Julie Mckinney Jan 2020

Evaluating The Impact Of Malaria Education On Student Missionaries, Julie Mckinney

Malaria has been studied for years, and yet remains one of the most significant vector-borne diseases that travelers encounter in malaria-endemic regions (CDC, 2019). Education is noted to be critical in disease prevention, management, and eradication. Student missionaries are at high risk for infection and can have a global influence that is improved through education. A pilot study was conducted on eleven students with a pre-test and post-test design after a malaria education webinar. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the baseline level of education in student missionaries, as well as to assess the effect of malaria …

A Look At Gene Control: Tracking The Ccnd1 Gene, Bryan Anders Jan 2020

A Look At Gene Control: Tracking The Ccnd1 Gene, Bryan Anders

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Cancer occurs when the cell does not properly control its own cell cycle. It then replicates in an out of control fashion leading to the death of various organs and then the demise of the organism as a whole. As it seems to have always been a problem for cell-based life, certain safeguards against cancer have been evolved over time. One such method comes in the form of prevention via cyclin proteins, which are encoded from cyclin genes. The gene that is the focus of this research is the CCND1, or cyclin D1, gene that controls the progression through various …

Perceptions Of Collaboration With A Doctor Of Clinical Laboratory Science, Leah Jane Ames

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Every person in America seeks medical care at some point, trusting and relying on highly educated healthcare professionals and sophisticated technology to solve their medical problem. The majority of clinicians rely on laboratory testing to provide insight into a patient’s illness. Unfortunately, the appropriate laboratory tests are not always ordered correctly during a patient’s initial visit. A study that examined 15 years of inappropriate test utilization indicates that, on average, 20.6% of lab tests were ordered when they weren’t needed and 44.8% of lab tests that were needed were not ordered. This is considered a medical error that can lead …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Bone metastatic prostate cancer (BM-PCa) significantly reduces overall patient survival and is currently incurable. Current standard immunotherapy showed promising results for PCa patients with metastatic, but less advanced, disease (i.e., fewer than 20 bone lesions) suggesting that PCa growth in bone contributes to response to immunotherapy. We found that: (1) PCa stimulates recruitment of neutrophils, the most abundant immune cell in bone, and (2) that neutrophils heavily infiltrate regions of prostate tumor in bone of BM-PCa patients. Based on these findings, we examined the impact of direct neutrophil-prostate cancer interactions on prostate cancer growth. Bone marrow neutrophils directly induced apoptosis …

Monocyte Metabolic Reprogramming Promotes Pro-Inflammatory Activity And Staphylococcus Aureus Biofilm Clearance, Kelsey J. Yamada, Cortney E. Heim, Xinyuan Xi, Kuldeep S. Attri, Dezhen Wang, Wenting Zhang, Pankaj K. Singh, Tatiana K. Bronich, Tammy Kielian

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Biofilm-associated prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) cause significant morbidity due to their recalcitrance to immune-mediated clearance and antibiotics, with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) among the most prevalent pathogens. We previously demonstrated that S. aureus biofilm-associated monocytes are polarized to an anti-inflammatory phenotype and the adoptive transfer of pro-inflammatory macrophages attenuated biofilm burden, highlighting the critical role of monocyte/macrophage inflammatory status in dictating biofilm persistence. The inflammatory properties of leukocytes are linked to their metabolic state, and here we demonstrate that biofilm-associated monocytes exhibit a metabolic bias favoring oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) and less aerobic glycolysis to facilitate their anti-inflammatory activity and biofilm …

Integrating Image Caption Information Into Biomedical Document Classification In Support Of Biocuration., Xiangying Jiang, Pengyuan Li, James A. Kadin, Judith A. Blake, Martin Ringwald, Hagit Shatkay

Faculty Research 2020

Gathering information from the scientific literature is essential for biomedical research, as much knowledge is conveyed through publications. However, the large and rapidly increasing publication rate makes it impractical for researchers to quickly identify all and only those documents related to their interest. As such, automated biomedical document classification attracts much interest. Such classification is critical in the curation of biological databases, because biocurators must scan through a vast number of articles to identify pertinent information within documents most relevant to the database. This is a slow, labor-intensive process that can benefit from effective automation.

We present a document classification …

Faculty Research 2020

Background: Oligodendroglioma is a rare primary central nervous system (CNS) tumor with highly variable outcome and for which therapy is usually not curative. At present, little is known regarding the pathways involved with progression of oligodendrogliomas or optimal biomarkers for stratifying risk. Developing new therapies for this rare cancer is especially challenging. To overcome these challenges, the neuro-oncology community must be particularly innovative, seeking multi-institutional and international collaborations, and establishing partnerships with patients and advocacy groups thereby ensuring that each patient enrolled in a study is as informative as possible.

Methods: The mission of the National Cancer Institute's NCI-CONNECT program …

Understanding Costs Of Healthcare: Patient Perspectives And Beyond, Edwin Yirong Chan Jan 2020

Understanding Costs Of Healthcare: Patient Perspectives And Beyond, Edwin Yirong Chan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Introduction: Healthcare spending in the US is among the highest in the world and continues to grow year-over-year despite outcomes comparable to or worse than other nations. This spending has translated to extensive patient burden and high out-of-pocket costs for many individuals. Despite high costs to both systems and individuals, patients continue to pursue expensive care options such as emergency department care over other appropriate alternatives. Here, we assess patient understanding of emergency room costs and influences on their decisions to pursue emergency department care.

Methods: Adult patients presenting to the emergency department for conditions not meriting hospital admission or …

Human Amniotic Membrane Improves Healing In A Chronic, Massive Rotator Cuff Repair Model, Maarouf Saad Jan 2020

Human Amniotic Membrane Improves Healing In A Chronic, Massive Rotator Cuff Repair Model, Maarouf Saad

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Rotator cuff tendon heals by fibrovascular scar that is weaker than native tissue leading to repairs that are prone to failure. To investigate the utility of an amniotic-membrane-derived human allograft in improving tendon-bone healing and skeletal muscle architecture, a rotator cuff repair model in Sprague-Dawley rats was established, tendon biomechanical testing, single muscle fiber biomechanical testing, microcomputed tomography analysis, tendon and muscle histological analysis, and gene expression analysis were performed. Our findings demonstrated single muscle-fibers with larger cross-sectional area and greater maximum isometric and specific force in the augmented experimental repair (ER) group. Additionally, microcomputed tomography revealed a larger volume …

Coronary Revascularization Options For Females: A Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Trials, Tayyab Hussain Shah Jan 2020

Coronary Revascularization Options For Females: A Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Trials, Tayyab Hussain Shah

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The totality of evidence for revascularization decisions between coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for the treatment of multivessel coronary artery disease comes from predominantly male patients. Although societal guidelines do not provide sex specific recommendations, growing evidence suggests that revascularization outcomes may not be consistent between sexes. This study evaluates outcomes of CABG versus PCI in female patients with multivessel disease (MVD) and/or left main disease (LMD). We conducted a systematic search to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the long-term outcomes after PCI versus CABG in MVD and/or LMD. We extracted female specific data …
