Translating A Pediatric Weight Management Intervention Into Medically Underserved Areas, Caitlin Golden May 2023

Translating A Pediatric Weight Management Intervention Into Medically Underserved Areas, Caitlin Golden

Theses & Dissertations

Despite substantial prevention and treatment efforts, childhood obesity remains a pressing public health concern. Disparities persist in obesity prevalence among children of lower socioeconomic status, racial and ethnic minority groups, and those residing in rural areas. The vast majority of efficacious pediatric weight management interventions (PWMIs) have been based in larger cities and urban areas delivered through inter-disciplinary teams in a hospital or medical center, and the degree to which these or other efficacious PWMIs have been translated to, and are feasible in, typical rural or micropolitan areas is unclear. This dissertation describes a dissemination strategy and a systematic approach …

Cystic Duct Morphology And Heister Valves: A Cadaveric Study, Cierra R. Goerish

Theses & Dissertations

Continued occurrence of cholelithiasis, gallstones, commonly results in cholecystectomy, removal of the gallbladder. Having a comprehensive anatomical, histological, and physiological knowledge of the biliary apparatus is imperative in clinical medicine today. Additionally, the functionality of cystic duct (CD) Heister valves (HV) has been speculatory since being reported in 1732. This study summarizes the morphology, orientation, and variability of the gross biliary system and provides data to help justify HV functionality.

Cadaveric dissection was utilized for gross observation and analysis of the biliary system. The angulation of the CD was found primarily as an acute angle; however, obtuse angulation could be …

'The Very Structure Of Opportunities Has Collapsed': How Taxation Policies Enhance, Decay, And Otherwise Affect The Distribution Of Health & Health Services In The United States, Valerie Pacino May 2023

'The Very Structure Of Opportunities Has Collapsed': How Taxation Policies Enhance, Decay, And Otherwise Affect The Distribution Of Health & Health Services In The United States, Valerie Pacino

Theses & Dissertations

Taxation is a function of government that patterns our lives socially, economically, and politically, but it remains understudied in public health. This dissertation examines three different elements of tax policy in the United States. First, a systematic review assesses the effects of in-work tax credits on child health outcomes and suggests they improve some infant and child health outcomes, particularly overall health, low birthweight, gestational age, and abuse and neglect. It concludes with suggestions to improve both the study of and structure of tax credits. Next, an interrupted time series analysis tracks ten years of community benefits spending by nonprofit …

Chest Wall Injury Pain With Movement, Lindsey Cavlovic May 2023

Chest Wall Injury Pain With Movement, Lindsey Cavlovic

Theses & Dissertations

Rib fractures are the most common injury in patients who sustain trauma to the chest wall. These patients often report exacerbated pain severity with deep breathing, coughing, and performing movements of the upper body. Clinical experience in treating these patients shows that patients usually avoid movement due to increased pain severity. Most pain scores from patients with chest wall injuries are assessed while the patient lies comfortably in bed. Although pain is the primary complaint of patients with chest wall injury, the assessment of this pain is likely under-represented, given that these patients remain inactive due to the pain that …

Theses & Dissertations

The trigeminal ganglion (TG) is known to receive its arterial supply from branches of the internal carotid artery (ICA), middle meningeal artery (MMA), accessory meningeal artery (AMA), or superior cerebellar artery (SCA). Existing information about the prevalence and patterns of blood supply to the TG is limited despite their high clinical relevance to basicranial surgeries. The objective of this study is to investigate the source and pattern of arterial supply to TG and discuss their clinical relevance. Left and right TG were examined on 75 embalmed human cadavers from an ethically approved anatomical donor program. A literature review was conducted, …

Development Of Combination Therapy Strategies To Treat Cancer Using Dihydroorotate Dehydrogenase Inhibitors, Nicholas Mullen May 2023

Development Of Combination Therapy Strategies To Treat Cancer Using Dihydroorotate Dehydrogenase Inhibitors, Nicholas Mullen

Theses & Dissertations

Cancer cells require supraphysiologic levels of nucleotide triphosphates to fuel their malignant behaviors, including uncontrolled proliferation, immune evasion, metastasis, and therapy resistance. This requirement is met by hyperactive flux through the de novo pyrimidine and de novo purine pathways. Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) is an essential enzyme in the de novo pyrimidine pathway that can be targeted by FDA approved and experimental drug compounds. A robust body of preclinical evidence, encompassing hundreds of independent studies over several decades, demonstrates impressive activity of DHODH inhibitors in animal models of cancer. Paradoxically, however, all clinical trials to date have failed to demonstrate efficacy …

Protocol For Tumor Dissociation And Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting Of Human Head And Neck Cancers, Ogoegbunam Okolo, Victoria Yu, Samuel Flashner, Cecilia Martin, Hiroshi Nakagawa, Derrick T Lin, Sidharth V Puram, Anuraag S Parikh

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Tumors originating from the head and neck represent diverse histologies and are comprised of several cell types, including malignant cells, cancer-associated fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and immune cells. In this protocol, we describe a step-by-step approach for the dissociation of fresh human head and neck tumor specimens, followed by isolation of viable single cells using fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Our protocol facilitates the effective downstream use of techniques, including single-cell RNA sequencing and generation of three-dimensional patient-derived organoids. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Puram et al. (2017)

Exploring The Occupational Impact Of Experiencing An Unexpected Death In Adulthood, Amanda Reann O'Donnell, Susan Macdermott

Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Experiencing the unexpected death of a close family member or friend may cause occupational disruptions in social participation, work and school performance, home management, and personal care maintenance (Simpson & Elberty, 2018; Forhan, 2010; Hoppes, 2005; Weis et al., 2019). Little research highlights the unique occupational impacts of unexpected loss, distinguished from other types of loss, and from a direct occupational perspective. Therefore little is known about how to provide aid, resources, and programming to this population. The purpose of this research project was to understand how occupations are uniquely impacted by experiencing the unexpected death of a loved one. …

A Reform Of Treatment: An Analysis Of The American Asylum Movement, Sam Lipert May 2023

A Reform Of Treatment: An Analysis Of The American Asylum Movement, Sam Lipert

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The nineteenth century was a revolutionary period for the medical field in America. While there was little regulation of the practice of medicine, there was a push towards the greater incorporation of science in the latter half of the century, and training in formalized schools increasingly became a symbol of legitimacy for physicians. This applied not only to practitioners of physiological medicine, but those who practiced psychiatric medicine as well. The nineteenth century saw both the birth and the death rattles of the American asylum, and it ushered in a new understanding of the insane – it promoted the idea …

Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers

The Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson in June 2022 reversed precedent which had previously protected abortion prior to fetal viability as a universal right within the United States. This decision almost immediately led to abortion restrictions across 25 states. The resulting lack of access to abortion care for millions of pregnant people will have profound physical and mental health consequences, the full effects of which will not be realized for years to come. Approximately 1 in 5 women access abortions in the U.S. each year. These women are diverse and represent all American groups. The Supreme court decision, …
