Submental Intubation In Oral Maxillofacial Surgery: A Case Report And Review Of Indications And Complications, Ed W. Alvarado, Jennifer Inofomoh, Mark Lavering, Diego Aleman

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

Background: Submental intubation has emerged as a crucial alternative airway management technique within the realm of oral maxillofacial surgery, addressing scenarios where conventional intraoral or nasal intubation proves infeasible or hazardous. The landscape of oral maxillofacial surgeries is characterized by intricate fractures, extensive soft tissue damage, and anatomical deviations that render traditional intubation methods untenable. This innovative technique involves the insertion of a modified oral endotracheal tube through a submental incision, subsequently threading it into the oropharynx. This procedure ensures secure airway access while safeguarding the integrity of oral and nasal passages. This modality reaps manifold benefits, spanning augmented …

For decades, there has been increasing concern about the potential developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) associated with chemicals. Regulatory agencies have historically utilized standardized in vivo testing to evaluate DNT. Owing to considerations including higher-throughput screening for DNT, reduction in animal use, and potential cost efficiencies, the development of alternative new approach methods (NAMs) occurred; specifically, the advent of the DNT in vitro test battery (DNT IVB). SciPinion convened an expert panel to address specific questions related to the interpretation of in vitro DNT test data. The consensus of the expert panel was that the DNT IVB might be used during initial …

Adolescent Hope And Optimism: A Scoping Review Of Measures And Their Psychometric Properties, Esther Chongwo, Ezra Too, Adam Mabrouk, Amina Abubakar

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

There is much research examining adolescent hope and optimism, but there is limited information on the available measures, particularly the most frequently used measures and their psychometric properties. We conducted a scoping review to: (1) identify measures of hope and optimism for use among adolescents; (2) determine the most frequently used measures of adolescent hope and optimism; (3) document the psychometric properties of the identified measures. We searched five bibliographic databases and Open Grey for relevant articles published from database inception to 03 May 2023. The search included the key terms ‘adolescents’, ‘optimism’, ‘hope’ and ‘measures’. We targeted adolescents aged …

Intra-Operative Guidelines For The Prevention Of Uterine Niche Formation In Cesarean Sections: A Review, Sean Backer, Deepesh Khanna, Sonia Sadr, Ali Khatibi, Sep 2023

Intra-Operative Guidelines For The Prevention Of Uterine Niche Formation In Cesarean Sections: A Review, Sean Backer, Deepesh Khanna, Sonia Sadr, Ali Khatibi,

HPD Articles

Formation of a uterine niche following a C-section can predispose the patient to future obstetric complications such as dehiscence, uterine rupture, ectopic pregnancy, and placenta accreta. The significant morbidity and mortality of these complications along with increasing C-section rates emphasizes the importance of prevention. However, there are no clear guidelines on intra-operative protocol to prevent postpartum niche formation. Besides surgical technique, the novel use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) injections has demonstrated promising potential and may have applications in hysterotomy closures. The objective is to examine current research on optimal C-section procedures to prevent uterine niche …

Poor Oral Health In Trauma Intensive Care Unit Patients: Application Of A Novel Oral Health Score, Kayli Quinton, Chelsea J Guy-Frank, Sophia Syed, James M Klugh, Naila H Dhanani, Shawn S Adibi, Lillian S Kao Sep 2023

Poor Oral Health In Trauma Intensive Care Unit Patients: Application Of A Novel Oral Health Score, Kayli Quinton, Chelsea J Guy-Frank, Sophia Syed, James M Klugh, Naila H Dhanani, Shawn S Adibi, Lillian S Kao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Although oral hygiene in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) has been shown to reduce hospital-associated infections, baseline and progressive oral health are often not reported because of lack of a standardized tool. The Oral Health Risk Assessment Value Index (OHRAVI) is a comprehensive oral assessment validated by dental providers. This study hypothesizes that non-dental providers can use OHRAVI in trauma ICU patients with minimal training and acceptable inter-rater reliability (IRR).

Patients and Methods: Dentulous adult patients in the ICU at a level 1 trauma center were scored, excluding those with severe orofacial trauma. The eight categories of …

Family Medicine, East Africa

Introduction: Acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections are common in outpatient settings but are not treated optimally. Few studies of the outpatient use of antibiotics for specifc diagnoses have been done in sub-Saharan Africa, so little is known about the prescribing patterns of medical ofcers in the region.

Methods: Aga Khan University has 16 outpatient clinics throughout the Nairobi metro area with a medical ofcer specifcally assigned to that clinic. A baseline assessment of evaluation and treatment of suspected UTI was performed from medical records in these clinics. Then the medical ofcer from each of the 16 clinics was recruited from …

Membrane Functionalization Approaches Toward Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances And Selected Metal Ion Separations, Francisco Cecil Léniz-Pizarro, Holly E. Rudel, Nicolas J. Briot, Julie B. Zimmerman, Dibakar Bhattacharyya

UK CARES Faculty Publications

Adsorption and ion exchange technologies are two of the most widely used approaches to separate pollutants from water; however, their intrinsic diffusion limitations continue to be a challenge. Pore functionalized membranes are a promising technology that can help overcome these challenges, but the extents of their competitive benefits and broad applicability have not been systematically evaluated. Herein, three types of adsorptive/ion exchange (IX) polymers containing strong/weak acid, strong base, and iron-chitosan complex groups were synthesized in the pores and partially on the surface of microfiltration (MF) membranes and tested for the removal of organic and inorganic cations and anions from …

Poverty And Commercial Surrogacy In India: An Intersectional Analytical Approach, Sheela Suryanarayanan Sep 2023

Poverty And Commercial Surrogacy In India: An Intersectional Analytical Approach, Sheela Suryanarayanan

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The destination and source countries for commercial surrogacy match world patterns of inequality. India, Nepal, Thailand, Mexico, and Cambodia banned commercial surrogacy, moving the market to other less-developed countries in South Africa and South America. India had a commercial surrogacy boom until exploitative factors led to the passage of the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill in 2019, which banned the practice. This paper examines surrogacy's monetary, health, and emotional effects on 45 surrogate mothers in Gujarat State, India. The study revealed that a majority (63%) of the very poor women remained very poor post-surgery. Surrogate mothers in poor households had to do …

Improving Timeliness Of Palliative Care Referrals Within The Intensive Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Project, Stephanie Fiore Sep 2023

Improving Timeliness Of Palliative Care Referrals Within The Intensive Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Project, Stephanie Fiore

DNP Projects

Significance and Background: Palliative care (PC) services are often underutilized in the ICU. There is a lack of understanding of PC by providers, staff, patients, and families which then leads to difficulty obtaining appropriate and adequate referrals to the PC team. In the ICU practice setting, the current process for palliative care referrals (PCRs) has the attending physician as the only individual to initiate a PCR referral. Another element missing from the current process is a criteria trigger tool that other disciplines, including nursing, can use to assess the patient’s need for PCR in the first 48 hours of admission. …
