Introduction: Brief interventions that reduce suicide risk following youth's experience with acute care due to suicidality are needed. Methods and analysis: The study will use a three-arm randomised controlled trial designed to test the effectiveness of the Safety Planning Intervention with structured follow-up (SPI+) and the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) compared with enhanced usual care. The primary outcomes measure will be suicidal events, defined as death by suicide, attempted suicide, preparatory acts toward imminent suicidal behaviour or suicidal ideation resulting in a change in emergency evaluation or inpatient admission. INTRODUCTION: The relationship between socioeconomic status and neurosurgical outcomes has been investigated with respect to insurance status or median household income, but few studies have considered more comprehensive measures of socioeconomic status. This study examines the relationship between Area Deprivation Index (ADI), a comprehensive measure of neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, and short-term postoperative outcomes after lumbar fusion surgery. METHODS: 1861 adult patients undergoing single-level, posterior-only lumbar fusion at a single, multihospital academic medical center were retrospectively enrolled. Objectives

Delirium, an acute change in mental state, seen in hospitalized older adults is a growing public health concern with implications for both patients and caregivers; however, there is minimal research on educating caregivers about delirium. Utilizing family caregivers to assist with delirium management in acute care settings demonstrates improved health outcomes supporting the need for patient and family centered care. The primary aims of the study were to determine feasibility of implementing a delirium education video for caregivers of patients in an adult oncology intensive care unit and compare delirium knowledge to caregivers in a control group.

Pakistan is a low middle-income country (LMIC) in South Asia with a rising aging population. This study aimed to understand care-arrangement and resources of people with dementia (PWD) in Karachi, Pakistan.

Methods:

This cross-sectional mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative) study was carried out using 10/66 protocol for dementia patients. Data collection for the study was done from September 2016 till August 2017.This assessed characteristics of patients and caregivers, the economic impact of caregiving, and resources available to care for people with dementia (PWD).

Healthcare providers often need to explore dosage form options for patients who are unable to swallow whole tablets or capsules. Most newly approved immediate-release (IR) oral solid drugs carry a "do not crush" warning or similar language in their labeling due to the lack of supporting clinical data. A 2021 publication by Uttaro et al. presented a crushability analysis strategy for risk assessment and demonstrated its utility for the questionable drugs on the ISMP do-not-crush list. This study aimed to extend the crushability analysis to newly FDA-approved drugs.

Single-cell analyses parse the brain’s billions of neurons into thousands of ‘cell-type’ clusters residing in different brain structures1. Many cell types mediate their functions through targeted long-distance projections allowing interactions between specific cell types. Here we used epi-retro-seq2 to link single-cell epigenomes and cell types to long-distance projections for 33,034 neurons dissected from 32 different regions projecting to 24 different targets (225 source-to-target combinations) across the whole mouse brain. We highlight uses of these data for interrogating principles relating projection types to transcriptomics and epigenomics, and for addressing hypotheses about cell types and connections related to genetics. …

Swaddling, the practice of covering babies to align the legs, prevent hip movement, carries a risk of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH).Correct swaddling techniques, emphasizing hip flexibility, mitigate risks and are promoted globally. Cultural shifts, as seen in Turkey and Japan, reflect awareness of swaddling's impact on hip health. In certain cultures, 90% of mothers swaddle infants for comfort, predominantly to keep legs straight, but traditional swaddling contributes to hip dysplasia risk, contrasting with the recommended technique allowing free limb movement. Globally, the sexual responses of genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder-affected women is poorly understood. This deficit is due, in part, to these women being prone to incorrect pathologic rankings in intercourse-related questionnaires, thereby lowering the dependability of results. Although patients with genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder display sexual intent, they typically avoid sexual circumstances in which penetration is involved. Gynaecological examinations are also frequently avoided, despite medical advice. Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a family of proteins, the plasma levels of which may increase >1000-fold in acute inflammatory states. We investigated the role of SAA in sepsis using mice deficient in all three acute-phase SAA isoforms (SAA-TKO). SAA deficiency significantly increased mortality rates in the three experimental sepsis mouse models: cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), cecal slurry (CS) injection, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatments. SAA-TKO mice had exacerbated lung pathology compared to wild-type (WT) mice after CLP. Platelets express several surface receptors that could interact with different viruses. To understand the mechanisms of HIV-1′s interaction with platelets, we chose the EcoHIV model. While EcoHIV is an established model for neuroAIDS, its effects on platelets are ill-defined. Our results indicate that EcoHIV behaves differently from HIV-1 and is cleared from circulation after 48 h post- infection. The EcoHIV course of infection resembles an HIV-1 infection under the effects of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) since infected mice stayed immunocompetent and the virus was readily detected in the spleen. EcoHIV-infected mice failed to become thrombocytopenic and showed no signs of …
