Development And Validation Of A Novel Skin Pigment Scale, Christina Guo, Henry Lim, Christopher Wong, Christian Scheufele, Michael Carletti, Michele L. Mccarroll, Stephen Weis

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Background: Precise description of the skin is a pillar of dermatology. For dermatologists, skin pigment is akin to a ‘vital sign’ in that it represents a basic, yet illuminating, piece of information for each patient. The current method used to describe skin color is the Fitzpatrick scale. The Fitzpatrick scale was designed to measure skin burning and the scale is inadequate for precise measurement of skin color in a diverse population. The prevalence of its use perpetuates harmful and outdated structures and contributes to health disparity. For those reasons, there is a critical need for initiatives that evaluate the current …

Stop That Bloody Cough: A Case Of Hemoptysis After Intrapleural Tpa Administration, Khizir Qureshi, Mark Cheneler, Carlos Bahrami

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Introduction: Congestive heart failure is a morbid condition with a myriad of pathologic sequelae. Recurrent accumulations of fluid in the pleural space serve as a nidus for infection. The combination of CHF-induced pleural effusions and concomitant pneumonia are a recipe for disaster as bacteria can translocate to form parapneumonic effusions with empyemas as potential complications. Empyemas are one of many etiologies of exudative pleural effusions and are treated with complete drainage of the infected pleural fluid; however, loculations create a barrier for thoracostomy drainage. Since the MIST2 trial in 2011, intrapleural alteplase and dornase alfa have been utilized as …

Taste And Learning In The Gustatory Cortex, Martin Raymond Jan 2024

Taste And Learning In The Gustatory Cortex, Martin Raymond

Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)

This research investigates the organization of taste representations in the gustatory cortex (GC) through two experiments utilizing miniscope imaging in mice. The first experiment focuses on conditioned taste aversion (CTA) and reveals that taste representations in GC are heavily dominated by palatability, with shifts in representational space occurring as a function of learning and extinction. The second experiment explores the interrelation of aversive stimuli, the impact of novelty on taste representations, and the role of somatosensory feedback. Findings suggest that familiarity and palatability emerge as positive signals with experience, shaping taste representations in GC. The study contributes to a nuanced …

Water pollution is a global issue that has been ongoing since 1800 (NOAA,2024). Water pollution occurs when harmful substances, mostly chemicals or microorganisms, contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, creating harmful water quality and rendering it toxic to humans and the environment. D.C. has faced ongoing challenges with lead contamination in its drinking water. As of 2024, D.C. Water still has tens of thousands of lead service lines (D.C. Water, 2024). Lead is a poisonous metal in small amounts in the earth's crust. On May 8, 2024, D.C. issued a boil water advisory due …

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1) is involved in DNA repair and transcriptional regulation mechanisms. This multifunctional activity of APE1 should be supported by specific structural properties of APE1 that have not yet been elucidated. Herein, we applied atomic force microscopy (AFM) to characterize the interactions of APE1 with DNA containing two well-separated G-rich segments. Complexes of APE1 with DNA containing G-rich segments were visualized, and analysis of the complexes revealed the affinity of APE1 to G-rich DNA sequences, and their yield was as high as 53%. Furthermore, APE1 is capable of binding two DNA segments leading to the formation of loops …
