Division of Community Engagement Resources

This resource discusses community-engaged data dissemination processes. It provides information on being able to produce many scholarly outputs in addition to co-creating accessible outputs for the community. The framework describes how to continue partnerships that are mutually beneficial to both the institution and the community. The CONNECT framework addresses community frustrations by transforming data dissemination into a systematic, partnership-driven process that goes beyond data extraction. It enables researchers to align their work more closely with community needs, guiding the next steps in research design, focus, and methodology.

This article examines the combined efforts of the Nurses’ Emergency Council (NEC), settlement houses, and the Department of Health during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic in New York City. To coordinate public health nursing, the NEC united the settlements and municipal agencies into an umbrella organization that was chaired by Lillian Wald of the Henry Street Settlement. Together, the NEC and the Health Department recruited a corps of nurses to treat influenza patients, primarily in their homes. Cognitive behavioral couple therapy (CBCT) is a model of therapy targeting cognitions, emotional responses, and behavioral interactions between couples experiencing relationship distress. Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) is a tool that clinicians can use to track the progress of their clients in therapy from the perspective of the client. This study aimed to use MFT-PRN, a type of ROM, to gather client progress throughout CBCT treatment. Prototypical change trajectories were created in Microsoft Excel for examination of presenting problem progress, couple satisfaction, and overall relationship functioning. It was found that small data sensitivity affected the trajectories immensely, though ROM outcomes revealed …

Background and Purpose: Maintaining functional mobility in an acute care setting helps prevent physiologic deconditioning and prolonged hospital stays. However, not all patients qualify for skilled physical therapy (PT). This case report explores the application of a mobility program before and after a unique gastrointestinal (GI) surgery.

Case Description: A 52-year-old man required PT services on day one following surgery. He experienced severe pain post-operatively and required complex pain management. PT interventions were implemented once per day for two weeks including strength, balance, functional mobility, endurance, pain management, and safety training. Introduction: The primary objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of a 6-week internet-delivered Mantram Repetition Program (MRP) for women recently treated for breast cancer. A secondary objective explored changes in perceived stress, psycho-spiritual measures, and cytokines in the treatment group compared to a waitlist. Methods: A feasibility study (ORBIT model Phase IIa) with a randomized controlled trial pilot was conducted. Eligible women recently treated for breast cancer were randomized to the treatment group (n = 14) or a waitlist group (n = 12) and participated for 12 weeks. Falls account for >$50 billion of medical spending in 2015 (CDC). Real-time haptic feedback shows promise at reducing static standing COM sway (Meszaros, 2019). Pilot data variability suggests that some haptic-wearers ‘over-correct’ (unnecessarily reducing available degrees of freedom), when haptic correction is perceived as ‘a mistake. Does over-correction reduce multi-segment control and impair sway stability (Hsu, Scholz, et al. 2007)?

Challenging older adults to execute peak effort functional tests is not common. A peak effort test pushes patients to the point of not sustaining the task. The Wingate test is a peak effort test that measures the amount of revolutions per second a participant can perform over 30s. Older adults with knee osteoarthritis (OA) may regulate their effort during the Wingate. Alternatively, high exertion during the Wingate test may yield high value in influencing attitudes related to pain and aging. Background: Inter-surgeon variability is a potential driver of variation in bundled care costs associated with cervical spine surgery.

Objective: This study aims to determine modifiable inter-surgeon factors that predict hospital cost variations associated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusions (ACDF).

Methods: This is a retrospective review of ACDF cases performed at a single institution by 15 surgeons from 2011 to 2017. Univariate analyses and mixed linear regression models were then used with the surgeon as a random effects variable to determine which factors were associated with surgical episode costs and surgical time. Background: Neurocytoma is an unusual intracranial neoplasm; it represents 0.1-0.5% of brain neoplasms. The first report of an extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) was published in 1989. Suprasellar neurocytomas are classified as EVN, representing a scarce variant of neurocytoma. There are only 22 cases of sellar neurocytomas reported in the literature, including the present one.

Observations: A 48-year-old woman arrived at the emergency department (ED) with a previously made MRI, which reported a sellar neoplasm. Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, a wide variety of neurological symptoms have appeared as part of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including cranial nerve impairments. Case Description: We describe a 33-year-old woman who developed glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) and trigeminal neuralgia (TN) immediately after the curse of COVID-19. MRI demonstrated two vascular structures contacting the right trigeminal nerve and possible vascular contact on the ipsilateral glossopharyngeal nerve. Severe arachnoiditis was identified during microvascular decompression of the right glossopharyngeal and trigeminal nerves. After the intervention and during the last follow-up, the patient remains without neuropathic pain. Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 is a possible etiology of …
