Background: Individuals with sickle cell disease are restricted from certain physical activities due to the increased risk of complications including fractures secondary to osteopenia. However the exact incidence and outcomes of fractures amongst these patients is unknown.
Objectives: (1) describe the incidence, epidemiology, and outcomes of fractures in patients with SCD. (2) to compare fracture patterns and outcomes in patients with and without SCD.
Methods: This is a retrospective, cohort study of patients aged 0-25 years old with HbSS, HbSC, or HbS-β-thalassemia with a fracture evaluated at a pediatric emergency department from April 2009-April 2022. Eligible patients were identified using …
Vaccine Hesitancy Among Youth Living With Hiv In Detroit, Madeline B. Simone
Vaccine Hesitancy Among Youth Living With Hiv In Detroit, Madeline B. Simone
Medical Student Research Symposium
Vaccine hesitancy among youth with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was evaluated to determine if the pandemic affected vaccine acceptance. A retrospective chart review was conducted to analyze vaccine rates over a five-year (pre-post COVID) in one university-based clinic. Results indicated a variation in acceptance rates between vaccines, with the MenACWY, MenB, tetanus, and HPV having the highest acceptance rates and COVID-19 and annual flu vaccine having the lowest acceptance rates. Vaccine hesitancy did not correlate with HIV treatment hesitancy nor with aversion to needles. Negative messaging around vaccines from a variety of sources appeared to be the primary factor in …

M-Chat Implementation Strategies To Improve Autism Screening Rates In Pediatric Clinics In Metro Detroit, Karamoja Monchamp
Medical Student Research Symposium
The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) is the most widely used autism screening tool. However, current practices for M-CHAT roll-outs and follow-ups are not wide-reaching, culturally sensitive, or consistent. This study aims to address the existing barriers to universal autism screenings and design a sustainable implementation strategy for a successful M-CHAT roll-out. We implemented strategies in five Henry Ford Health pediatric clinics, incorporating iPad-administered M-CHAT in waiting rooms, multilingual options, task shifting for referrals, forced choice mechanisms, and audit-and-feedback support. A Clinical Screening Dashboard tracked real-time M-CHAT data, including demographic information, collected from EPIC. Our goal is to …

Epithelial And Mesenchymal Olfactory Stem Cells Gathered With Minimally-Invasive Micro-Brush, Tyler Petersen
Medical Student Research Symposium
Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes devastating lifestyle and financial consequences for the patient. Treatment strategies emphasize neuroprotection, but not regeneration. In this regard, stem cells are an innovative field of study that has the potential to regenerate neural tissue, thereby increasing a person’s ability to regain function. The purpose of this project is two-fold: to attain olfactory stem cells located in the nasal canal in a minimally-invasive way and to gather neural cells from the epithelium and mesenchymal cells in the lamina propria. Cells were gathered with sterile nasal micro-brushes, stored, and grown in flasks. After cells reached confluency, they …

Medical Student Research Symposium
BACKGROUND
Palliative care is a vital resource for the critically or terminally ill. It has myriad benefits such as improved quality of life, reduced depressive symptoms, and decreased scarce resource utilization. Self-identified Black/African patients, however, are less likely to utilize advanced care directives or engage in hospice/comfort care measures and are more likely to prefer intensive treatment at the end of life. There is no research, however, on how the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected these trends.
METHODS
A retrospective cohort study of patients who experienced in hospital mortality or in hospital hospice due to COVID-19 between March 2020 – …

Medical Student Research Symposium
Every year, there are new products on the market advertised to preserve a youthful appearance and reduce the signs of aging. One classic example is eye cream. Due to the periorbital region’s high susceptibility to damage from external factors, along with its tendency to demonstrate early signs of aging, periorbital skin is a common target for anti-aging therapy. While some of these ingredients have proven efficacious in clinical trials, others have not shown to be clinically significant. Various products contain different combinations, formulations, and doses of these ingredients. This review evaluates the efficacy of popular topical ingredients found in common …

Role Of Intraflagellar Transport Protein Ift20 In The Formation And Function Of Motile Cilia In Mammals, Mohammad Z. Abdulghani, Wei Li, Tao Li, Michael J. Holtzman, Gregory J. Pazour, Zhibing Zhang
Medical Student Research Symposium
Cilia are microtubular structures present on most mammalian cells, which can be categorized into motile cilia and primary cilia (non-motile cilia). The axoneme of both cilia types possess intraflagellar transport (IFT) machinery, composed of unique protein complexes that travel in opposite directions along the microtubules. Although the role of IFT in primary cilia formation has been well studied, little is known about its role in mammalian motile cilia assembly. IFT20 is a component of IFT-B complex. We generated conditional Ift20 knockout mice by crossing floxed Ift20 mice with the Foxj1-Cre transgenic mouse line to specifically delete Ift20 from motile cilia. …
An Educational Intervention Differentiating Pressure Injuries From End-Of-Life Wounds, Alicia Perez Varela, Annette Callis
An Educational Intervention Differentiating Pressure Injuries From End-Of-Life Wounds, Alicia Perez Varela, Annette Callis
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background
End-of-life (EOL) wounds are identified in the literature as Kennedy Terminal Ulcers (KTU), Skin Failure (SF), Trombley-Brennan Terminal Tissue Injury (TB-TTI), and SCALE (Skin Changes at Life’s End). EOL wounds have a similar appearance to pressure injuries (PIs) with a fundamentally different etiology. The misclassification of EOL wounds as PIs results in increased Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPI), hospital fines, and less-than-optimal EOL wound management.
Purpose
To examine the effectiveness of an educational intervention on EOL wounds in increasing nurse confidence in providing End-of-Life Care (EOLC) and differentiating PIs from EOL wounds.
Methods
This quasi-experimental study used the 28-item …

Management Of Sepsis With The Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, Jeanna Adams
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Abstract
Background:
Sepsis can be a source of morbidity and mortality particularly when there are delays in treatment. Early identification may improve time to antimicrobial administration. The quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) is an evidence-based practice screening tool that, when in used in conjunction with the Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) criteria can enhance recognition and treatment of sepsis. On a suburban Southern California hospital Neurological/Telemetry Unit the qSOFA is automatically calculated in the electronic medical record (EMR) but the bedside nurses were unaware of its availability and value. In addition, sepsis was not being identified in a timely …

Fall Prevention Quality Initiative: Implementation Of Fall Ambassador Safety Team (Fast), Jerome Codilla, Joanna Arraiza
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background
Patient falls are the most common adverse events reported in hospitals and represent a persistent patient safety issue. Annually, roughly 700,000 to 1 million patient falls occur in United States hospitals, resulting in around 250,000 injuries and up to 11,000 deaths (LeLaurin et al., 2019). Nurses are responsible for the identification of high fall risk patients and development of a plan of care to minimize risk. Multifactorial strategies have been shown to reduce falls, but evidence of a sustainability team (fall champions) is lacking. Review of the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) data on a 33-bed progressive …
