Inhibitors Angptl3 And Their Effects To Hyperlipidemia And Atherosclerosis, Wanee Plengpanich

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3) has emerged as important regulators of lipid metabolism. Current innovative therapeutic options using monoclonal antibodies, antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) or vaccine approaches to block this protein may minimize the risk of atherosclerosis in dyslipidemic individuals. The purpose of this review is to discuss the effectiveness of these new ANGPTL3 inhibitors.

Case Report Of Surgical Management For Charcot Foot Medial Column Beaming With Stj Arthrodesis, Prachi Patel, Randy Semma May 2024

Case Report Of Surgical Management For Charcot Foot Medial Column Beaming With Stj Arthrodesis, Prachi Patel, Randy Semma

Posters

Medial column beaming is a surgical procedure that involves inserting a metallic beam to the medial column of the foot to treat the Charcot deformity of the foot.

A surgeon will use a large diameter screw to insert a beam into medial column which includes the first metatarsal, medial cuneiform, navicular and talus (fig 3) The beam shares the load of weightbearing with the foot's ligaments and joints, reducing the abnormal loss of structural integrity that can occur in Charcot arthropathy of the foot.

Subtalar joint fusion is often performed concurrently with medial column beaming to enhance the overall stability …

Brains Over Bronze, Natalia L. Williams

Whittier Scholars Program

While we as a society have made great strides in rewarding and praising athletes for the shows of great physical display, there is a lack of support or awareness of the mental health aspects of competition, especially at the college and professional level. This project illuminates the dire need for mental health resources and training. Athletes undergo a number of pressures and challenges in their work life as well as their personal development. Through literature review, this symposium aims to offer insight on the experiences of college and professional athletes, then providing mental health and psychological skills training resources that …

With Love, ; An Interdisciplinary And Intersectional Look At Why Creativity Is Essential, Theo Starr Gardner May 2024

With Love, ; An Interdisciplinary And Intersectional Look At Why Creativity Is Essential, Theo Starr Gardner

Whittier Scholars Program

My Whittier Scholars Program self-designed major, Teaching Creativity, is a mixture of Art, Literature, and Education classes. My research and praxis classes have been focused on the ‘how?’s and 'why?’s of creativity, so it felt only right that my project should be a constructivist, generative project. The project I have been working on throughout my time at Whittier, and that has just fully come to fruition on April 11th, 2024, was a solo art gallery/open mic event entitled ‘With Love,’. With Love, was conceptually inspired by the research I’ve conducted on creativity and creative arts education over the past few …

Perception Of African Immigrants Living In The United States Towards Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment Hesitancy, Akinwale O. Obatayo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

About 80% of active tuberculosis (TB) cases are caused by untreated latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), with most being foreign-born United States residents. Despite the availability of preventive therapies, African immigrants living in the United States are hesitant to accept LTBI treatment. Although researchers have explored LTBI treatment hesitancy among foreign-born United States citizens, no study has explored the perspectives of African immigrants living in the United States. This generic qualitative study explored the perception of African immigrants living in the United States on LTBI treatment hesitancy. Participants’ inclusion criteria include those 18 years and older with a positive TB test, …

Type 2 Diabetes As A Risk Factor For The Development Of Cognitive Dysfunction In U.S. Adults, Bobbi Johnson May 2024

Type 2 Diabetes As A Risk Factor For The Development Of Cognitive Dysfunction In U.S. Adults, Bobbi Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is no consensus as to whether having type 2 diabetes increases an individual’s risk for developing cognitive dysfunction. Though cognitive dysfunction is considered a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, it is also classified as a newly formed diabetes-related complication. The purpose of the study was to evaluate if self-reported healthcare – diagnosed diabetes has any association in the risk of the development of cognitive dysfunction in individuals living with type 2 diabetes. Self-determination theory served as the theoretical framework. The research questions concerned whether (a) an association exists between diabetes and cognitive dysfunction, (b) ethnicity plays a vital …

Pseudoaneurysm Development After Short Cephalomedullary Femoral Nailing, Nicholas E. Runge, Daniel P. Mccall May 2024

Pseudoaneurysm Development After Short Cephalomedullary Femoral Nailing, Nicholas E. Runge, Daniel P. Mccall

Posters

Hip fractures are amongst the most treated conditions by orthopaedic surgeons1 and are routinely treated with cephalomedullary nails (CMN)s.

Pseudoaneurysm formation is a rare complication after femoral CMN. The primary cause of pseudoaneurysm formation in previous studies has been found to be related to overpenetration of the far cortex with a drill or screw.

Patients with neuromuscular diseases may have aberrant anatomy potentially leading to increased risk of pseudoaneurysm formation

This the first case report of a patient with post-polio syndrome who developed a symptomatic deep femoral artery pseudoaneurysm status post short CMN fixation for a basicervical femoral neck fracture …

Remove The Ring: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Upper Extremity Trauma, Brandon Wallace, Matthew Charlick, Josiah Valk, Aaron Seidman May 2024

Remove The Ring: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Upper Extremity Trauma, Brandon Wallace, Matthew Charlick, Josiah Valk, Aaron Seidman

Posters

Upper extremity trauma is a common injury and post traumatic edema is an expected sequela. Retained rings on the digits prohibit circumferential swelling and may lead to tourniquet syndrome if left in place leading to a devastating and avoidable consequence.

Expeditious ring removal in upper extremity trauma is prudent for patient safety.

Radiographs are typically obtained early in the triage and treatment of patients suffering from upper extremity trauma. This presented itself as as reliable efficient target to have rings removed prior to this treatment step.

An opportunity to make a systemic change to maximize patient safety and care was …

A Beginner's Guide To Gerontological Counseling: A Summary Of Considerations For Counselors Providing Psychotherapy To Older Adults In Rural Settings, Kelly D. Higgins May 2024

A Beginner's Guide To Gerontological Counseling: A Summary Of Considerations For Counselors Providing Psychotherapy To Older Adults In Rural Settings, Kelly D. Higgins

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

The elderly population continues to rapidly increase in the United States, leading to a significant need for mental health care among older adults. While older adults experience significant role changes, increased potential for physical and cognitive limitations, and heightened social isolation, all of which contribute to an increased psychiatric need, very few counselors are specially trained to provide adequate geriatric treatment. This is especially true in rural populations, where accessibility limitations are often more significant and mental health professionals are few and far between. This project provides a brief review of the literature regarding these various considerations, challenges, and areas …

Bridging The Gap Between Primary Care And Mental Health: A Quality Improvement Project, Coreyann Fluker May 2024

Bridging The Gap Between Primary Care And Mental Health: A Quality Improvement Project, Coreyann Fluker

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Establishing a robust connection between primary care and mental health services is crucial for fostering a patient-centered healthcare model. This quality improvement project addresses the pressing issue of limited access to mental health services in rural areas of the United States, leading to unmet mental health needs for patients. These challenges were identified within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Implementing a collaborative care approach seeks to enhance triage practices by facilitating warm handoffs from primary care to mental health providers while integrating an informative triage tool, the SAD PERSONS Scale.

This collaborative approach enhances patient outcomes …

Integrating Health-Related Quality Of Life And Evidence-Based Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Management: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Kami Beveridge Wast

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder affecting approximately 10% of women of reproductive age, characterized by symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and metabolic issues (Fatemeh et al., 2021). Despite its prevalence, the management of PCOS remains challenging due to its manifestations and impact on quality of life. Current treatment paradigms often fail to adequately address the comprehensive needs of this patient population, highlighting a substantial gap in care.

Utilizing the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) methodology, this quality improvement (QI) project aimed to enhance the management of PCOS and improve the quality of life for patients in a …

Dnp Final Report: Balancing Self-Care And Patient Care: An Intervention To Enhance Well-Being For Acute Care Nurses, Robert V. Rose Jr.

DNP Final Reports

This project delves into the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare and nursing, focusing on the well-being of nurses within the context of acute care settings. Poor well-being leads to increased levels of burnout and the evidence-based practice project aimed to increase the perception of well-being.

The formulated PICOT question driving this project was: In acute care nurses (P), how does the use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) program (I) compared to no Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) (C) impact nurses’ perception of well-being (O). The evidence substantiates that ACT interventions effectively elevate perceptions of well-being, as …

A Mind-Body Intervention To Improve Physical Activity For Patients With Chronic Hip-Related Pain: Protocol For A Mixed Methods Study., Kate N Jochimsen, Kristin R Archer, Robin A Pollini, Robert A Parker, Nomin Enkhtsetseg, Cale A Jacobs, Ana Maria Vranceanu

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Pain and dysfunction persist for most patients following hip-related pain treatment. Additionally, individuals with hip-related pain are typically less physically active than individuals without hip pain, despite evidence that regular physical activity reduces chronic musculoskeletal pain. Poor psychological health is common in patients with hip-related pain and further reinforces low physical activity. Mind-body interventions can improve psychological health and activity levels but have yet to be integrated to provide comprehensive, psychologically informed care for patients with hip-related pain. Thus, we are using the NCCIH intervention development framework to develop Helping Improve PSychological Health (HIPS), a novel, multimodal mind-body intervention …

Utilization Of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy And Split Thickness Skin Grafts In The Context Of Complex Skin Closure Via Secondary Intention: A Protocol Approach, Jihan Toma, Eric Li, Randy Semma, Michele Bertelle-Semma, Asif Khan

Posters

Patients with complex, chronic foot wounds or ulcerations are at risk for major amputations. In this quality improvement (QI) initiative, we present an implemented protocol for patients with foot ulcerations and attempt to heal them using a combination of wound vac therapy and split thickness skin grafting. These patients have a history of either diabetes and/or neuropathy that makes wound healing more difficult than an otherwise healthy individual.
