Exploring Caregiver Support For Advanced Practice Nurses Following An Error, Sunnie Lee Nield
Exploring Caregiver Support For Advanced Practice Nurses Following An Error, Sunnie Lee Nield
Theses and Dissertations
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) are a growing population of employed individuals within the healthcare system, working in outpatient and inpatient settings. Like other healthcare professionals, nurse practitioners can and do make errors while practicing. Nevertheless, little to no research has focused on them. This research aimed to better understand nurse practitioners' attitudes towards error approach, perception, and cause using the Medical Error Attitude Scale (MEAS). Additional purposes included the further exploration of APRNs' experiences following an error and support they may or may not receive. A convenience sample of ARPNs licensed in Utah was sent an electronic survey via …

PURPOSE: Appendiceal adenocarcinoma (AA) remains an orphan disease with limited treatment options for patients unable to undergo surgical resection. Evidence supporting the efficacy of combined VEGF and PD-1 inhibition in other tumor types provided a compelling rationale for investigating this combination in AA, where immune checkpoint inhibitors have not been explored previously.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We conducted a prospective, single-arm phase II study evaluating efficacy and safety of atezolizumab in conjunction with bevacizumab (Atezo+Bev) in advanced, unresectable AA.
RESULTS: Patients treated with the Atezo+Bev combination had 100% disease control rate (1 partial response, 15 stable disease) with progression-free survival (PFS) of …

Purpose
Community health needs assessments are required for most state and local public health agencies and non-profit hospitals. Typically based on community health improvement planning models, these assessments encompass overall com- munity health and multiple diseases to inform program planning. National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Centers and community-based cancer-focused programs share the goal of reducing cancer burden in the catchment areas they serve. However, to date, no published models exist to guide cancer-specific needs assessments for a determined geographic area that can inform both public health and research initiatives. The purpose of this article is to outline a cancer needs …

Thrombosis, a key factor in most cardiovascular diseases, is a major contributor to human mortality. Existing antithrombotic agents carry a risk of bleeding. Consequently, there is a keen interest in discovering innovative antithrombotic agents that can prevent thrombosis without negatively impacting hemostasis. Platelets play crucial roles in both hemostasis and thrombosis. We have previously characterized calcium- and integrin-binding protein 1 (CIB1) as a key regulatory molecule that regulates platelet function. CIB1 interacts with several platelet proteins including integrin αIIbβ3, the major glycoprotein receptor for fibrinogen on platelets. Given that CIB1 regulates platelet function through its interaction with αIIbβ3, we developed …
Evaluating Nurse Medication Education, Nina Marie Carter
Evaluating Nurse Medication Education, Nina Marie Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Inefficient communication between nurses and patients increases the risk of medication errors and jeopardizes patient safety, ultimately resulting in lower patient satisfaction as indicated by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to assess the impact of educating nurses on patient medication education using the teach-back method. Data were collected using HCAHPS survey responses from adult patients with medical conditions who had been discharged from a medical-surgical unit. The 32-item HCAHPS survey was used to capture their perceptions and experiences during their hospital stay. Data analysis entailed comparing HCAHPS …

BACKGROUND: The ketogenic diet (KD), based on high fat (over 70% of daily calories), low carbohydrate, and adequate protein intake, has become popular due to its potential therapeutic benefits for several diseases including cancer. Under KD and starvation conditions, the lack of carbohydrates promotes the production of ketone bodies (KB) from fats by the liver as an alternative source of metabolic energy. KD and starvation may affect the metabolism in cancer cells, as well as tumor characteristics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of KD conditions on a wide variety of aspects of breast cancer cells …

A total of 3102 neurons were recorded before and following acute and chronic methylphenidate (MPD) administration. Acute MPD exposure elicits mainly increases in neuronal and behavioral activity in dose–response characteristics. The response to chronic MPD exposure, as compared to acute 0.6, 2.5, or 10.0 mg/kg MPD administration, elicits electrophysiological and behavioral sensitization in some animals and electrophysiological and behavioral tolerance in others when the neuronal recording evaluations were performed based on the animals’ behavioral responses, or amount of locomotor activity, to chronic MPD exposure. The majority of neurons recorded from those expressing behavioral sensitization responded to chronic MPD with further …

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare stenoocclusive cerebral vasculopathy often treated by neurosurgical revascularization using extracranial-intracranial bypasses to prevent ischemic or hemorrhagic events. Little is known about the vascular risk profile of adult MMD patients compared to the general population. We therefore analyzed 133 adult MMD patients and compared them with data from more than 22,000 patients from the German Health Update database. Patients with MMD showed an age- and sex-adjusted increased prevalence of arterial hypertension, especially in women between 30 and 44 years and in patients of both sexes between 45 and 64 years. Diabetes mellitus was diagnosed significantly …

Maackia amurensis lectins serve as research and botanical agents that bind to sialic residues on proteins. For example, M. amurensis seed lectin (MASL) targets the sialic acid modified podoplanin (PDPN) receptor to suppress arthritic chondrocyte inflammation, and inhibit tumor cell growth and motility. However, M. amurensis lectin nomenclature and composition are not clearly defined. Here, we sought to definitively characterize MASL and its effects on tumor cell behavior. We utilized SDS-PAGE and LC-MS/MS to find that M. amurensis lectins can be divided into two groups. MASL is a member of one group which is composed of subunits that form dimers, …

Physical Therapy For Survivors Of Torture: A Scoping Review, Justine Dee, Nancy Gell, Constance Van Eeghen, Benjamin Littenberg
Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers
Background: Torture can result in impaired function, reduced quality of life, and chronic pain. Physical therapy (PT) is recommended for wholistic care of survivors of torture (SOT), however there are limited evidenced-based guidelines. We conducted a scoping review to identify and describe the approach and gaps in knowledge around the PT treatment of SOT.
Methods: We adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. Nine databases were searched from inception to 2023. Eligible sources were those involving PT treatment for SOT. Extracted data included the source of evidence, PT description, mode …

Background: The authors postulate that obesity in children increases the risk of distal radius fracture compared to children who are not obese. Because it is difficult to determine the population at risk, the authors observed the inverse of the rate of obesity in pediatric patients with distal radius fractures in an attempt to determine if there was a difference compared to national data on frequency of obesity in the pediatric population in general. If the rate of obesity was greater in distal radius fractures than the overall population, this would constitute evidence that obesity may increase the risk of distal …

Mobile devices (e.g., tablets and smartphones) have been rapidly integrated into the lives of children and have impacted howchildren engage with digital media. The portability of these devices allows for sporadic, on-demand interaction, reducing theaccuracy of self-report estimates of mobile device use. Passive sensing applications objectively monitor time spent on a givendevice but are unable to identify who is using the device, a significant limitation in child screen time research. Behavioralbiometric authentication, using embedded mobile device sensors to continuously authenticate users, could be applied toaddress this limitation. This study examined the preliminary accuracy of machine learning models trained on iPad …
