Background: Differences in rotational range of motion (ROM) compared to humeral retrotorsion (HRT)-corrected rotational ROM exist in healthy baseball athletes, but it is unclear whether these differences exist in a pathological population.

Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to determine if there are disparities between objectively measured differences in ROM and HRT-corrected deficits in injured baseball players. It was hypothesized that disparities would exist between (1) the side-to-side difference in glenohumeral external rotation (GER) and the HRT-corrected glenohumeral external rotation deficit (GERD) and (2) the side-to-side difference in glenohumeral internal rotation (GIR) and the HRT-corrected glenohumeral internal rotation deficit …

Structure And Function Are Not The Same: The Case For Restoring Mechanoreceptor Continuity Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury, Jillian E Beveridge, Payam Zandiyeh, Brett D Owens, Ata M Kiapour, Braden C Fleming Aug 2024

Structure And Function Are Not The Same: The Case For Restoring Mechanoreceptor Continuity Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury, Jillian E Beveridge, Payam Zandiyeh, Brett D Owens, Ata M Kiapour, Braden C Fleming

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, particularly in increasingly young and active adolescents, continues to pose a clinical challenge with re-injury rates reported as high as 30%. Evidence also suggests that current standard-of-care ACL reconstruction (ACLR) does not mitigate post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) risk. Bridge- enhanced ACL restoration (BEAR) is a recently developed and tested ACL surgery that promotes primary healing of the native ACL with excellent early results. BEAR has shown to reduce signs of early PTOA compared to ACLR in an animal model. Here, we describe a theoretical framework related to re-innervation that can clarify why the outcomes of ACLR …

Shared Delusion: Impact On The Parent-Child Relationship, Ngozi Adaralegbe, Ayotomide Oyelakin, Omobusayo Omotayo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Folie à famille, also known as shared psychotic disorder among family members, is a rare and underdiagnosed psychiatric condition. This disorder, seldom discussed in the literature, is particularly notable for its impact on clinical management and parent-child relationships. The few reported cases have predominantly focused on adult populations, leaving a significant gap in understanding how this condition manifests and affects younger individuals and family dynamics. One area that remains largely unexplored in the literature is the intersection between attachment patterns and shared psychosis, particularly in the context of parent-child relationships. Understanding this intersection is crucial, as it can provide insights …

Therapeutic Decisions And Implications In Patients With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Versus Bipolar Disorder: Key Insights For Clinicians, Ngozi Adaralegbe, Ayotomide Oyelakin, Omobusayo Omotayo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and pediatric bipolar disorder (BD) are conditions that often manifest in childhood and can persist into adulthood. Due to the similarities in their clinical presentations, it is crucial for clinicians to have a thorough understanding of these disorders. Accurate differentiation of symptoms is essential for making precise diagnoses, as this directly influences treatment decisions and affects the overall functioning and quality of life of those impacted. Considered here is the case of a teenage male who initially presented with impulsivity and was diagnosed with ADHD. However, upon further evaluation, his diagnosis was revised to BD. …

The Role Of The Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex In Bilingual Language Switching And Non-Linguistic Task-Switching: Evidence From Multi-Voxel Pattern Analysis, Kelly A Vaughn, Benjamin J Tamber-Rosenau, Arturo E Hernandez Aug 2024

The Role Of The Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex In Bilingual Language Switching And Non-Linguistic Task-Switching: Evidence From Multi-Voxel Pattern Analysis, Kelly A Vaughn, Benjamin J Tamber-Rosenau, Arturo E Hernandez

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Previous research suggests that bilingual language control requires domain-general cognitive control. Recent research suggests that exploration of individual differences is key for understanding the relationship between bilingual language control and cognitive control. The current study used multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to examine within-subject patterns of fMRI activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during bilingual language switching and non-linguistic task-switching. We hypothesized that bilinguals would have identifiable, within-subject patterns of DLPFC activity for both types of switching and that bilinguals and monolinguals would differ in patterns of DLPFC activity for task-switching. We were unable to identify patterns of DLPFC activity …

Key Points:

  • Endotrophin (ETP), a circulating marker of fibroinflammation, is elevated in critically ill patients with AKI.
  • ETP is independently associated with major adverse kidney events at hospital discharge.
  • Sustained elevations of ETP at 5–7 days are associated with major adverse kidney events.

Background: The search for novel biomarkers in AKI continues, both for being able to predict adverse events in AKI but also for confirming pathogenic pathways as potential therapeutic targets. Endotrophin (ETP) is an emerging biomarker in a number of fibroinflammatory diseases. We sought to test the association of ETP with the development of a major adverse kidney …

Despite increasing interest in the dynamics of functional brain networks, most studies focus on the changing relationships over time between spatially static networks or regions. Here we propose an approach to study dynamic spatial brain networks in human resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) data and evaluate the temporal changes in the volumes of these 4D networks. Our results show significant volumetric coupling (i.e., synchronized shrinkage and growth) between networks during the scan, that we refer to as dynamic spatial network connectivity (dSNC). We find that several features of such dynamic spatial brain networks are associated with cognition, with …

Candida Albicans Natural Diversity: A Resource To Dissect Fungal Commensalism And Pathogenesis, Elena Lindemann-Perez, J Christian Perez Aug 2024

Candida Albicans Natural Diversity: A Resource To Dissect Fungal Commensalism And Pathogenesis, Elena Lindemann-Perez, J Christian Perez

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Candida albicans is a ubiquitous fungus of humans. It is not only a component of the oral and intestinal microbiota of most healthy adults but also a major cause of mucosal disorders and life-threatening disseminated infections. Until recently, research on the biology and pathogenesis of the fungus was largely based on a single clinical isolate. We review investigations that have started to dissect a diverse set of C. albicans strains. Using different approaches to leverage the species' phenotypic and/or genetic diversity, these studies illuminate the wide range of interactions between fungus and host. While connecting genetic variants to phenotypes of …

The Effects Of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation On Excitability Of The Primary Motor Cortices And Complex Motor Task Learning, Erik Woodruff Wilkins Aug 2024

The Effects Of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation On Excitability Of The Primary Motor Cortices And Complex Motor Task Learning, Erik Woodruff Wilkins

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) are promising non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, particularly for clinical applications involving altered or impaired motor function, such as in stroke and Parkinson’s disease. Although tDCS and tACS are different modalities, both forms of stimulation operate on the same principle - weak electrical currents are delivered through electrodes placed on the scalp in specific configurations known as “montages”. The most commonly used montage for targeting the primary motor cortex (M1) is the M1-SO configuration. This montage leverages the established observation that cortical regions directly beneath the anode generally increase in …

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is becoming a critical component of new approach methods (NAMs) in chemical risk assessment. As a whole organism in vitro NAM, the zebrafish model offers significant advantages over individual cell-line testing, including toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic competencies. A transcriptomic approach not only allows for insight into mechanism of action for both apical endpoints and unobservable adverse outcomes, but also changes in gene expression induced by lower, environmentally relevant concentrations. In this study, we used a larval zebrafish model to assess the behavioral and transcriptomic alterations caused by subphenotypic concentrations of 2 chemicals with the same structural backbone, …

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and the fastest-growing cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are the key image-based examination methods for HCC patients. Patients may alternatively undergo CT and MR exams given a radiation dose of the former and the cost of the latter. Due to organ representation differences between CT and MR, it's a great challenge to detect the tumors from a time series of data consisting of both CT and MR by a single model. The annotations for these time series …

Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) developed ex vivo and in vitro are increasingly used for therapeutic screening. They provide a more physiologically relevant model for drug discovery and development compared to traditional cell lines. However, several challenges remain to be addressed to fully realize the potential of PDOs in therapeutic screening. This paper summarizes recent advancements in PDO development and the enhancement of PDO culture models. This is achieved by leveraging materials engineering and microfabrication technologies, including organs-on-a-chip and droplet microfluidics. Additionally, this work discusses the application of PDOs in therapy screening to meet diverse requirements and overcome bottlenecks in cancer treatment. …

Introduction: Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP) benchmarking algorithms helped the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) reduce postoperative mortality. Despite calls to consider social risk factors, these algorithms do not adjust for social determinants of health (SDoH) or account for services fragmented between the VHA and the private sector. This investigation examines how the addition of SDoH change model performance and quantifies associations between SDoH and 30-d postoperative mortality.

Methods: VASQIP (2013-2019) cohort study in patients ≥65 y old with 2-30-d inpatient stays. VASQIP was linked to other VHA and Medicare/Medicaid data. 30-d postoperative mortality was examined using multivariable logistic …

Immune checkpoint therapies (ICT) can induce life-threatening immune-related adverse events, including myocarditis and myositis, which are rare but often concurrent. The molecular pathways and immune subsets underlying these toxicities remain poorly understood. To address this need, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing of heart and skeletal muscle biopsies obtained from living patients with cancers treated with ICTs and admitted to the hospital with myocarditis and/or myositis (overlapping myocarditis plus myositis, n = 10; myocarditis-only, n = 1) or ICT-exposed patients ruled out for toxicity utilized as controls (n = 9). All biopsies were obtained within 96 hours of clinical presentation. Analyses …

Upfront autologous stem cell transplantation (auto-SCT) remains standard of care for eligible patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM), although recently its role has been questioned. The aim of the study was to evaluate trends in patient characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of NDMM who underwent upfront auto-SCT over three decades. We conducted a single-center retrospective analysis of patients with NDMM who underwent upfront auto-SCT at MD Anderson Cancer Center between 1988 to 2021. Primary end points were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Patients were grouped by the year of auto-SCT: 1988-2000 (n = 249), 2001-2005 (n = 373), …

Cancer is a major cause of global mortality, both in affluent countries and increasingly in developing nations. Many patients with cancer experience reduced life expectancy and have metastatic disease at the time of death. However, the more precise causes of mortality and patient deterioration before death remain poorly understood. This scarcity of information, particularly the lack of mechanistic insights, presents a challenge for the development of novel treatment strategies to improve the quality of, and potentially extend, life for patients with late-stage cancer. In addition, earlier deployment of existing strategies to prolong quality of life is highly desirable. In this …

Successful treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), an aggressive form of primary brain neoplasm, mandates the need to develop new therapeutic strategies. In this study, we investigated the potential of PBI-05204 in targeting GBM stem cells (GSCs) and the underlying mechanisms. Treatment with PBI-05204 significantly reduced both the number and size of tumor spheres derived from patient-derived GSCs (GBM9, GSC28 and TS543), and suppressed the tumorigenesis of GBM9 xenografts. Moreover, PBI-05204 treatment led to a significant decrease in the expression of CD44 and NANOG, crucial markers of progenitor stem cells, in GBM9 and GSC28 GSCs. This treatment also down-regulated GRP78 expression …
