Reducing Greenhouse Gases Through Food Waste Reduction: A Literature Review Of Programs And Behavior Change, Schafer Flowerday
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions significantly contribute to climate change. Methane is a potent GHG emitted in landfills as organic material breaks down. Food waste is the single most common item disposed of in Lincoln’s Bluff Road Landfill (LTU, 2022). As such, food waste disposal in the landfill is a preventable issue that could dramatically reduce GHG emissions in Lincoln. This project seeks to determine what barriers and motivations exist for reducing food waste at a consumer level. A literature review was conducted to find what behavior change campaigns and interventions have taken place nationwide to encourage residential food waste …

Objective: Linear and logistic regression are widely used statistical techniques in population genetics for analyzing genetic data and uncovering patterns and associations in large genetic datasets, such as identifying genetic variations linked to specific diseases or traits. However, obtaining statistically significant results from these studies requires large amounts of sensitive genotype and phenotype information from thousands of patients, which raises privacy concerns. Although cryptographic techniques such as homomorphic encryption offers a potential solution to the privacy concerns as it allows computations on encrypted data, previous methods leveraging homomorphic encryption have not addressed the confidentiality of shared models, which can leak …

Accurate assessment of GFR is crucial to guiding drug eligibility, dosing of systemic therapy, and minimizing the risks of both undertreatment and toxicity in patients with cancer. Up to 32% of patients with cancer have baseline CKD, and both malignancy and treatment may cause kidney injury and subsequent CKD. To date, there has been lack of guidance to standardize approaches to GFR estimation in the cancer population. In this two-part statement from the American Society of Onco-Nephrology, we present key messages for estimation of GFR in patients with cancer, including the choice of GFR estimating equation, use of race and …

The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device is FDA-approved for the treatment of bifurcation aneurysms. Despite its wide popularity, it has been under scrutiny for its association with potential aneurysm recanalization and retreatment due to device shape modification. This study aims to analyze the shape modification rate of WEB devices and identify factors associated with this phenomenon, as well as its correlation with aneurysm retreatment. We conducted a retrospective review of the WorldWide WEB Consortium database, including adult patients treated for intracranial aneurysms with the WEB device. We assessed aneurysm occlusion using the WEB Occlusion Scale and defined WEB shape modification as …

Background: The vagus nerve plays an important role in neuroimmune interactions and in the regulation of inflammation. A major source of efferent vagus nerve fibers that contribute to the regulation of inflammation is the brainstem dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMN), as recently shown using optogenetics. In contrast to optogenetics, electrical neuromodulation has broad therapeutic implications. However, the anti-inflammatory effectiveness of electrical stimulation of the DMN (eDMNS) and the possible heart rate (HR) alterations associated with this approach have not been investigated. Here, we examined the effects of eDMNS on HR and cytokine levels in mice administered with lipopolysaccharide …

This study addresses the prevalent issue of missing data in patient-reported outcome datasets, particularly focusing on head and neck cancer patient symptom ratings sourced from the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory. Given that many data mining and machine learning algorithms necessitate complete datasets, the accurate imputation of missing data as an initial step becomes crucial. In this study we propose, for the first time, the use of collaborative filtering for imputing missing head and neck cancer patient symptom ratings. Two configurations of collaborative filtering, namely patient-based and symptom-based, leverage known ratings to infer the missing ones. Additionally, this study compares the …

INTRODUCTION: There is a major research gap relating to the impact of intravenous (IV) fluids administration during labor on maternal and neonatal outcomes. It is biologically plausible that a relationship between volume of IV fluids and primary postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) exists. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate whether the administration of high-volume IV fluids during labor (≥ 2500 mL) increases the risk of primary PPH and other adverse outcomes for women with a term, singleton pregnancy, in comparison to low-volume IV fluids during labor (<2500 >mL).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a …

Background: In total hip arthroplasty via the direct anterior approach, appropriate exposure is critical to allow preparation of the femur. The objective of this study was to explore the optimal soft tissue releases needed to allow broaching of the femur through a combination of experimental tests and computer simulations.
Methods: Fourteen full-body cadaveric specimens were included in this study. Total hip arthroplasty was performed via the direct anterior approach with the femur at 20° adduction and 20°extension. Soft tissue releases were performed sequentially, namely, the transverse iliofemoral ligament, descending iliofemoral ligament, ischio-femoral ligament, conjoint tendon, and obturator externus. After each …

The mechanisms of adenosine and specific adenosine receptor subtypes in promoting penile rehabilitation remain unclear. Single‐cell RNA sequencing of human corpus cavernosum, adenosine deaminase (ADA) and adenosine receptors knock‐out mice (ADA−/−, A1−/−, A2a−/−, A2b−/−, and A3−/−), and primary corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cells are used to determine receptor subtypes responsible for adenosine‐induced erection. Three rat models are established to characterize refractory erectile dysfunction (ED): age‐related ED, bilateral cavernous nerve crush related ED (BCNC), and diabetes mellitus‐induced ED. In single‐cell RNA sequencing data, the corpus cavernosum of ED patients show a decrease in adenosine A1, A2a and A2b receptors. In vivo, …

Background: Cognitive impairment (CI) and stroke are diseases with significant disparities in race and geography. Post stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) can be as high as 15-70 % but few studies have utilized large administrative or electronic health records (EHR) to evaluate trends in PSCI. We utilized an EHR database to evaluate for disparities in PSCI in a large sample of patients after first recorded stroke to evaluate for disparities in race.
Methods: This is a retrospective cohort analysis of Cerner Health Facts® EHR database, which is comprised of EHR data from hundreds of hospitals/clinics in the US from 2009-2018. We …

Candida auris is an emerging fungal pathogen with several concerning qualities. First recognized in 2009, it has arisen in multiple geographically distinct genomic clades nearly simultaneously. C. auris strains are typically multidrug resistant and colonize the skin much better than most other pathogenic fungi; it also persists on abiotic surfaces, enabling outbreaks due to transmission in health care facilities. All these suggest a biology substantially different from the 'model' fungal pathogen, Candida albicans and support intensive investigation of C. auris biology directly. To uncover novel virulence mechanisms in this species requires the development of appropriate animal infection models. Various studies …

Background: Differences in rotational range of motion (ROM) compared to humeral retrotorsion (HRT)-corrected rotational ROM exist in healthy baseball athletes, but it is unclear whether these differences exist in a pathological population.
Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to determine if there are disparities between objectively measured differences in ROM and HRT-corrected deficits in injured baseball players. It was hypothesized that disparities would exist between (1) the side-to-side difference in glenohumeral external rotation (GER) and the HRT-corrected glenohumeral external rotation deficit (GERD) and (2) the side-to-side difference in glenohumeral internal rotation (GIR) and the HRT-corrected glenohumeral internal rotation deficit …

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, particularly in increasingly young and active adolescents, continues to pose a clinical challenge with re-injury rates reported as high as 30%. Evidence also suggests that current standard-of-care ACL reconstruction (ACLR) does not mitigate post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) risk. Bridge- enhanced ACL restoration (BEAR) is a recently developed and tested ACL surgery that promotes primary healing of the native ACL with excellent early results. BEAR has shown to reduce signs of early PTOA compared to ACLR in an animal model. Here, we describe a theoretical framework related to re-innervation that can clarify why the outcomes of ACLR …
