Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a major cause of death with few treatment options. Here, we demonstrate the therapeutic efficacy for lung fibrosis of adult lung cell transplantation using a single-cell suspension of the entire lung in two distinct mouse systems: bleomycin treatment and mice lacking telomeric repeat-binding factor 1 expression in alveolar type 2 (AT2) cells (SPC-Cre TRF1fl/fl), spontaneously developing fibrosis. In both models, the progression of fibrosis was associated with reduced levels of host lung progenitors, enabling engraftment of donor progenitors without any additional conditioning, in contrast to our previous studies. Two months after transplantation, engrafted progenitors …

Advancements in our comprehension of tumor biology and chemoresistance have spurred the development of treatments that precisely target specific molecules within the body. Despite the expanding landscape of therapeutic options, there persists a demand for innovative approaches to address unmet clinical needs. RNA therapeutics have emerged as a promising frontier in this realm, offering novel avenues for intervention such as RNA interference and the utilization of antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs). ASOs represent a versatile class of therapeutics capable of selectively targeting messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and silencing disease-associated proteins, thereby disrupting pathogenic processes at the molecular level. Recent advancements in chemical modification …

“Two Is Company, Three Is A Crowd” – A Case Presentation Of Cardiac Amyloidosis, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Plus Coronary Heart Disease, Carolina Miguel Gonçalves, Mariana Carvalho, Celia Domingues, Fatima Saraiva, Joao Morais
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
A 76-year-old man was referred to our appointment with complaints of exertional dyspnea. He had a medical history consisting of chronic coronary syndrome, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator for primary prevention. A transthoracic echocardiogram revealed features suspicious for cardiac amyloidosis. Haematologic and genetic tests were negative, and scintigraphy was positive, confirming wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis, not eligible for tafamidis. Several months later with optimized medical therapy, he had two worsening heart failure events.
This clinical case highlights the importance of differential diagnosis. Our patient had both hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and transthyretin amyloidosis, a rare association that constitutes a diagnostic and treatment …

The Potential Renoprotective Effects Of Ticagrelor In Rhabdomyolysis-Induced Acute Kidney Injury In Rat, Zahraa Talib Hussein, Ayad Ali Hussein
Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Background: Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially lethal range of symptoms results from muscle cell destruction. It is recognized by the escape of cell contents such as myoglobin, creatine kinase, and electrolyte into the bloodstream then undergo glomeruli filtering. Therefore, among the most dangerous complication of rhabdomyolysis is acute renal injury. The complex and interrelated processes underlying rhabdomyolysis that ends with acute kidney injury include obstruction and damage of tubules, inflammation, and intrarenal vasoconstriction (activation of the sympathetic, renin-angiotensin).Glycerol is frequently used to inflict this kind of harm when used as a single dose injection that given intramuscularly to an animal …

Mechanical circulatory support devices have demonstrated efficacy in adult congenital patients with biventricular repairs. The off-label use of ventricular assist devices may be invaluable for managing end-stage single ventricle failure. We present the case of a 27-year-old male who developed heart failure, congestive hepatopathy, and, ultimately, cardiogenic shock. He received a HeartMate 3 (Abbott, Chicago, IL, USA) without complications one year after the surgery.
Determinants Of Testicular Cancer Survival Rates In American Indian/Alaska Natives, Mufaya Nganzi
Determinants Of Testicular Cancer Survival Rates In American Indian/Alaska Natives, Mufaya Nganzi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Testicular cancer is the most common solid tumor among male young adults between 15 to 34 years old. Despite progress with the testicular cancer survival rate, American Indians or Alaskan Natives (AI/ANs) have the highest mortality rate of testicular cancer compared to all other racial groups in the United States. There is a shortage of reported studies on social-related factors that affect the survival rate of testicular cancer patients among AI/ANs. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between stage at diagnosis, treatment, insurance status, and marital status as independent variables and the survival rate (in months) …

Background
- Surgery is the primary form of definitive treatment for early-stage lung cancer.
- Poor lung function before surgery places patients at high risk of pulmonary complications after resection.
- Surgeons evaluate patient fitness for surgery using pulmonary function tests (PFTs) to calculate the predicted postoperative PFT (ppoPFT).
- Conventional ppoPFT calculations assume homogeneous lung function, which can be inaccurate.
- 4DCT-ventilation is a novel lung function imaging modality developed in radiation oncology that uses 4DCT data to calculate high-resolution ventilation maps.

Outdoor Recreation For People With Spinal Cord Injuries: An Educational Video Series, Siarra Walker
Student Capstone Papers
More than 15 million people globally are living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Only half of people with SCI engage in leisure activities and approximately 71% of the population reports dissatisfaction in their leisure participation. There are numerous intrinsic and extrinsic barriers that lead to these significant declines in leisure exploration and participation, including lack of knowledge and inaccurate accessible online information. In correlation with these barriers, occupational therapy practitioners underutilize leisure participation during the rehabilitation process for people with SCI and this is an underreported topic in the literature. Occupational therapy practitioners and people with SCI lack knowledge of …

Despite improvements in the awareness and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQ+) individuals, the LGBTQ+ community continues to experience discrimination, which can result in adverse health outcomes. In particular, LGBTQ+ youth have an increased risk of experiencing depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Societal stigma and rejection, bullying, and familial disapproval all contribute to these health disparities. In recognition of these inequities, an interprofessional team of biomedical faculty members, staff, and trainees from the Louisiana State University Health Science Center (LSUHSC) in New Orleans developed the needs-assessment evaluation, the Gender and Sexual Minority …

Ontology is essential for achieving health information and information technology application interoperability in the biomedical fields and beyond. Traditionally, ontology construction is carried out manually by human domain experts (HDE). Here, we explore an active learning approach to automatically identify candidate terms from publications, with manual verification later as a part of a deep learning model training and learning process. We introduce the overall architecture of the active learning pipeline and present some preliminary results. This work is a critical and complementary component in addition to manually building the ontology, especially during the long-term maintenance stage.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by social communication deficits plus repetitive behaviors and restricted interests, currently affects 1/36 children in the general population. Recent advances in functional brain imaging show promise to provide useful biomarkers of ASD diagnostic likelihood, behavioral trait severity, and even response to therapeutic intervention. However, current gold-standard neuroimaging methods (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging, fMRI) are limited in naturalistic studies of brain function underlying ASD-associated behaviors due to the constrained imaging environment. Compared to fMRI, high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT), a non-invasive and minimally constraining optical neuroimaging modality, can overcome these limitations. …

Introduction
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) represent a novel tool in therapeutic endoscopy. However, the presence of LAMS may dissuade surgeons from operations with curative-intent. We report three clinical scenarios with deployment of LAMS in patients that subsequently underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD).
Methods
Six patients identified from our IRB-approved pancreas cancer database had EUS-LAMS placement prior to PD. Patient, tumor, treatment-related variables, and outcomes are herein reported.
Results
Two patients underwent a LAMS gastrojejunostomy (GJ) for duodenal obstruction. Another patient underwent LAMS choledochoduodenostomy (CDS) for malignant biliary obstruction. In three patients, a LAMS gastrogastrostomy or jejunogastrostomy was deployed post …

Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) feature altered brain development, developmental delay and seizures, with seizures exacerbating developmental delay. Here we identify a cohort with biallelic variants in DENND5A, encoding a membrane trafficking protein, and develop animal models with phenotypes like the human syndrome. We demonstrate that DENND5A interacts with Pals1/MUPP1, components of the Crumbs apical polarity complex required for symmetrical division of neural progenitor cells. Human induced pluripotent stem cells lacking DENND5A fail to undergo symmetric cell division with an inherent propensity to differentiate into neurons. These phenotypes result from misalignment of the mitotic spindle in apical neural progenitors. Cells …

Although long-term survival in Rett syndrome (RTT) has been observed, limited information on older people with RTT exists. We hypothesized that increased longevity in RTT would be associated with genetic variants in MECP2 associated with milder severity, and that clinical features would not be static in older individuals. To address these hypotheses, we compared the distribution of MECP2 variants and clinical severity between younger individuals with Classic RTT (under 30 years old) and older individuals (over 30 years old). Contrary to expectation, enrichment of a severe MECP2 variant (R106W) was observed in the older cohort. Overall severity was not different …

We identify a population of PRTG+ve MYChigh NESTINlow stem cells in the four-week-old human embryonic hindbrain that subsequently localizes to the ventricular zone of the rhombic lip (RLVZ). Oncogenic transformation of early Prtg+ve rhombic lip stem cells initiate Group 3 Medulloblastoma (Gr3-MB)-like tumors. PRTG+ve stem-cells grow adjacent to a human specific interposed vascular plexus in the RLVZ, a phenotype which is recapitulated in Gr3-MB, but not other types of medulloblastoma. Co-culture of Gr3-MB with endothelial cells promotes tumor stem-cell growth, with the endothelial cells adopting an immature phenotype. Targeting the PRTGhigh compartment of Gr3-MB in vivo using either the diphtheria …

Saudi Arabia has seen a significant improvement in its healthcare system over the past four decades resulting in an increase in life-expectancy. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has spread widely in Saudi Arabia and has become a routine procedure in many centers. The expanding clinical indications and the availability of the technology have made it possible for many large and intermediate centers all over the country to commence their own TAVI programs. So, the aim of this document is to standardize TAVI practices in different Saudi Arabian centers through reasonable guidelines based on the evaluation and summarization of the best …
