Investigating If Medical Schools In States With A Higher Cancer Mortality Rate Have A Greater Percentage Of Medical Students Matching Into Radiology, Michelle M. Pham

School of Medicine Publications

Introduction

Radiology has become a more competitive and desired specialty over the recent years. There can be many attributable factors that influence this trend. One specific facet may be the cancer mortality rate of a state. Cancer is often diagnosed through imaging. Greater exposure to cancer in an individual’s personal life or medical training may influence the specialty that they decide to pursue. This paper will investigate whether the cancer mortality rate of a state has a pattern with the percentage of students in medical school that matched into radiology.

Methods

The 2022 age-adjusted death rate by state was collected …

Considering First Nations Lgbtiq+ Identity In Anti-Racist Healthcare: Relations Between Comfort In Healthcare, Microaggressions And Wellbeing, Bep Uink, Rebecca Bennett, Sian Bennett, Dameyon Bonson, Braden Hill

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

First Nations scholars and practitioners have increasingly called for anti-racist healthcare to address disparate health outcomes between First Nations and non-First Nations Australians. However, these arguments largely miss the significant negative impact that colonial heterosexism and cisgenderism (i.e. discrimination and marginalisation of queer and transgender peoples) have on LGBTIQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning) First Nations peoples’ wellbeing. To address this gap, survey data from 63 First Nations LGBTIQ+ adults in Western Australia were utilised to illustrate the impact of racism, heterosexism and cisgenderism in healthcare settings on First Nations LGBTIQ+ peoples’ wellbeing. This study examined relations between participant …

CDCA7, encoding a protein with a carboxyl-terminal cysteine-rich domain (CRD), is mutated in immunodeficiency, centromeric instability, and facial anomalies (ICF) syndrome, a disease related to hypomethylation of juxtacentromeric satellite DNA. How CDCA7 directs DNA methylation to juxtacentromeric regions is unknown. Here, we show that the CDCA7 CRD adopts a unique zinc-binding structure that recognizes a CpG dyad in a non-B DNA formed by two sequence motifs. CDCA7, but not ICF mutants, preferentially binds the non-B DNA with strand-specific CpG hemi-methylation. The unmethylated sequence motif is highly enriched at centromeres of human chromosomes, whereas the methylated motif is distributed throughout …

Minocycline-Induced Retinal Pigment Epithelium Hyperpigmentation Masquerading As Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Case Presentation And Proposed Mechanism, Michael D. Yu, Nikhil Bommakanti, Yoshihiro Yonekawa, Jose S. Pulido

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

PURPOSE: We describe the case of an 80-year-old man with bilateral minocycline-induced retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) hyperpigmentation, which initially masqueraded as AMD. Secondarily, using multimodal imaging features, we propose a mechanism for the development of minocycline-induced RPE hyperpigmentation.

OBSERVATIONS: The patient was referred with concern for AMD given the presence of macular drusenoid deposits on optical coherence tomography. However, funduscopic evaluation showed dense granular parafoveal hyperpigmentation, with a diffuse slate-colored hyperpigmentation throughout the peripheral fundus. Short-wavelength fundus autofluorescence of the macula disclosed no irregularities (as would be expected with drusen) while on near-infrared reflectance (NIR) imaging, numerous hyperreflective foci were …

Metabolite Biomarker Discovery For Lung Cancer Using Machine Learning, Ariski Fajarido, Linda Erlina, Aryo Tedjo, Fadilah Fadilah, Wawaimuli Arozal

Indonesian Journal of Medical Chemistry and Bioinformatics

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. About 2.1 million lung cancer patients were diagnosed in 2018, accounting for about 11.6% of all newly diagnosed cancer cases. For lung cancer, blood is the first choice as a source of screening biomarker candidates. Blood biomarkers provide a snapshot of the patient's entire body, including the primary tumor, metastatic disease, immune response, and peritumoral stroma. However, sputum sampling, bronchial lavage or aspiration, exhaled breath (EB), and airway epithelial sampling represent unique samples for lung cancer and other airway cancers as potential sources for alternative biomarkers. Metabolites are products of …

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a major cause of death with few treatment options. Here, we demonstrate the therapeutic efficacy for lung fibrosis of adult lung cell transplantation using a single-cell suspension of the entire lung in two distinct mouse systems: bleomycin treatment and mice lacking telomeric repeat-binding factor 1 expression in alveolar type 2 (AT2) cells (SPC-Cre TRF1fl/fl), spontaneously developing fibrosis. In both models, the progression of fibrosis was associated with reduced levels of host lung progenitors, enabling engraftment of donor progenitors without any additional conditioning, in contrast to our previous studies. Two months after transplantation, engrafted progenitors …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

A 76-year-old man was referred to our appointment with complaints of exertional dyspnea. He had a medical history consisting of chronic coronary syndrome, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator for primary prevention. A transthoracic echocardiogram revealed features suspicious for cardiac amyloidosis. Haematologic and genetic tests were negative, and scintigraphy was positive, confirming wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis, not eligible for tafamidis. Several months later with optimized medical therapy, he had two worsening heart failure events.

This clinical case highlights the importance of differential diagnosis. Our patient had both hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and transthyretin amyloidosis, a rare association that constitutes a diagnostic and treatment …

Student Capstone Papers

More than 15 million people globally are living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Only half of people with SCI engage in leisure activities and approximately 71% of the population reports dissatisfaction in their leisure participation. There are numerous intrinsic and extrinsic barriers that lead to these significant declines in leisure exploration and participation, including lack of knowledge and inaccurate accessible online information. In correlation with these barriers, occupational therapy practitioners underutilize leisure participation during the rehabilitation process for people with SCI and this is an underreported topic in the literature. Occupational therapy practitioners and people with SCI lack knowledge of …

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by social communication deficits plus repetitive behaviors and restricted interests, currently affects 1/36 children in the general population. Recent advances in functional brain imaging show promise to provide useful biomarkers of ASD diagnostic likelihood, behavioral trait severity, and even response to therapeutic intervention. However, current gold-standard neuroimaging methods (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging, fMRI) are limited in naturalistic studies of brain function underlying ASD-associated behaviors due to the constrained imaging environment. Compared to fMRI, high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT), a non-invasive and minimally constraining optical neuroimaging modality, can overcome these limitations. …

Ontology is essential for achieving health information and information technology application interoperability in the biomedical fields and beyond. Traditionally, ontology construction is carried out manually by human domain experts (HDE). Here, we explore an active learning approach to automatically identify candidate terms from publications, with manual verification later as a part of a deep learning model training and learning process. We introduce the overall architecture of the active learning pipeline and present some preliminary results. This work is a critical and complementary component in addition to manually building the ontology, especially during the long-term maintenance stage.
