The stress created by academic pressure may prevent honors students from exploring curricula beyond that required by their majors. Challenged with additional workload and extracurricular requirements, students in honors often confront added stress caused by a desire to perform favorably in all academic pursuits. This pressure may result in hesitancy to explore new ideas, nurture curiosity, or break free from the rigors of a defined program of study—the opposite of what honors pedagogy and practice purport. This study explores the effect of preexisting mental health issues on college students’ academic performance. Using unique data from the honors college at a medium-sized urban private university, authors examine college entry essays (N = 1,062) in five classes (two pre-pandemic and three post-pandemic), as well as advisors’ (N = 7) notes. Mental health (MH) concerns are grouped into six non-mutually exclusive categories: depression/anxiety, neurodiversity/learning disabilities, identity-related concerns, grief/loss, trauma, and the mental health of others whose lives impact the student. Student wellness is a growing concern among educators. Previous studies on the well-being of honors students as compared to other undergraduates result in mixed findings. This study examines the trajectory of gifted programming in education and specific challenges to the collegiate experience, presenting differences between honors students (N = 49) and non-honors peers (N = 138) using two well-being indicators (academic anxiety and academic self-efficacy) and three related factors (perceived past school competitiveness, maladaptive perfectionism, and pressure due to labeling). While both individual honors programs and their broader campus communities have implemented new initiatives and intervention strategies to address undergraduate mental health, significant needs remain unmet and concerns unaddressed about the long-term implications for students. This paper provides a framework for understanding the current (2023) environment on many campuses by presenting national legislation that shapes campus response, offering cases of specific institutional responses to crisis, and exploring the impact of face-to-face interaction between faculty and students in classrooms. The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae), is a ubiquitous pest in affordable housing. They represent a major threat to human health due to their contribution of asthma-exacerbating allergens and the potential to transfer pathogenic microorganisms indoors. Despite well-documented pyre- throid resistance, pyrethroid-based broadcast residual insecticide products are often used by residents to con- trol cockroaches in their homes. Additionally, there is little empirical independent testing of these products. The rising prevalence of chronic illnesses, particularly cancer, and aging populations in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) underscore the urgent need for palliative care. Palliative care (PC) improves the quality of life for patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses by addressing physical, psychological, and spiritual suffering. However, cultural barriers impede its implementation, particularly in LMICs. This paper identifies some of these barriers, including the widely held misconceptions of palliative care, inadequate truth-telling practices, and insufficient attention to patients' diverse spiritual needs. INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder that typically results in Café-au-lait macules and peripheral nerve sheath tumors (i. e, neurofibromas). While peripheral neurofibromas are common, intra-articular knee neurofibromas are rarely described in the literature. To date, there only have been two other case reports noting intra-articular knee neurofibromas. The authors present the case of a patient with NF1 who was found to have an intra-articular knee neurofibroma incidentally discovered during the surgical approach to a retrograde femoral nail.

This dissertation investigates adverse events (AEs) associated with COVID-19 vaccinations through a multi-faceted approach involving structured and unstructured data. The study is organized into three specific aims, each contributing to a comprehensive understanding of vaccine safety. Aim 1 focuses on the temporal and spatial analysis of AEs reported in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). We performed a detailed temporal analysis to detect patterns over time, revealing a significant increase in reported AEs shortly after the vaccine rollout. Neurosteroids are endogenous steroids within the brain that act as modulators in neurotransmission. Among their targets are the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, which are responsible for inhibitory signaling in the brain. The interaction between neurosteroids and GABA receptors is complex, influencing mood regulation and pain perception. Endogenous neurosteroids have been used in conditions such as postpartum depression (PPD), where fluctuation in neurosteroid levels contribute to the onset of depressive systems. Conversely, exogenous neurosteroids, such as brexanolone and zuranolone, have emerged as therapeutic agents for PPD. These compounds act as positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) on GABA receptors, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission and …

The Icelandic Prevention Model (IPM) follows a systematic but flexible process of community capacity building, data collection, analysis, dissemination, and community-engaged decision-making to guide the data-informed selection, prioritization, and implementation of intervention strategies in preventing adolescent substance use. This paper describes two new evaluation tools intended to assess the: 1) integrity of IPM implementation, and 2) unique aspects of IPM implementation in different community contexts. Fundus photography is a radiation-free, non-invasive imaging modality widely employed to assess both ocular and systemic diseases in population-level applications. Traditional methods for extracting cardiovascular biomarkers rely on quantifying vascular features in these images to identify indicators of disease. However, these approaches often depend on manual clinical expertise, which can be costly and time-consuming, making them impractical for large-scale datasets. Deep learning offers a compelling alternative to traditional techniques by enabling the automated processing of extensive datasets with high accuracy. Objectives: Strength assessment and comparison to normative values are an important benchmarking tool in human health and performance. However, population specific normative data are several decades old, lack information about adolescent and adult strength levels and are not representative of the strength levels of strength trained individuals. The purpose of this study was to develop contemporary strength norms for the squat, bench press, and deadlift using powerlifters competing in un-equipped, drug-tested competitions. Design: Retrospective cross-sectional analysis. Methods: Retrospective data from global drug-tested, unequipped powerlifting competitions were collated with 809,986 samples (571,650 males, 238,336 females) included. Bilothorax, the accumulation of bile in the pleural space, is an uncommon but serious condition often linked to biliary tract or diaphragmatic injury. This case report describes a 70-year-old female with decompensated liver cirrhosis due to primary sclerosing cholangitis, who developed a moderate sized pleural effusion following ERCP and biliary stenting. The patient's pleural effusion persisted for 2 months without respiratory symptoms, indicating a self-limited low-volume leak. She eventually underwent thoracentesis for a non-resolving unilateral effusion, which drained 435 mL of bilious fluid with an elevated pleural fluid bilirubin level, confirming the diagnosis of bilothorax. Background: Plant-rich dietary patterns may protect against negative health outcomes among individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), although aspects of plant-based diet quality have not been studied. This study aimed to examine associations between healthful and unhealthful plant-based dietary patterns with risk of all-cause mortality among CKD patients for the first time.

Methods: This prospective analysis included 4807 UK Biobank participants with CKD at baseline. The response of spinal motoneurons to synaptic input greatly depends on the activation of persistent inward currents (PICs), the contribution of which can be estimated through the paired motor unit technique. Yet, the intra-session test–retest reliability of this measurement remains to be fully established. Twenty males performed isometric triangular dorsiflexion contractions to 20 and 50 % of maximal torque at baseline and after a 15-min resting period. High-density electromyographic signals (HD-EMG) of the tibialis anterior were recorded with a 64-electrode matrix.
