Introduction: Education on social determinants of health (SDH) aligns with national standards for medical education. However, there are minimal existing resources targeted to medical students specific to the care of the pediatric population. We designed a case-based curriculum on SDH for third-year medical students on their pediatric clerkship to address this deficit. Methods: Third-year medical students on their pediatric clerkship received a case-based flipped classroom educational series on SDH in four 10-minute segments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) has been a leader in cancer-related dissemination & implementation (D&I) science. Given increased demand for D&I research, the CPCRN Scholars Program launched in 2021 to expand the number of practitioners, researchers, and trainees proficient in cancer D&I science methods. BACKGROUND: Children with obesity may experience weight-based discrimination as a result of weight bias and stigma, which can have deleterious effects on their health and wellbeing, including increased risk of dysregulated, maladaptive, and disordered eating such as restriction, purging, and binging. Prior work has shown that weight bias occurs from healthcare workers caring for adults, but less is known about the prevalence of weight bias in the pediatric healthcare setting.

The field of interventional pulmonology has grown immensely and is increasingly recognized as a subspecialty. The new procedures introduced in the last decade pose unique challenges, and anesthesiologists need to readapt to their specific demands. In this review, we extensively discuss the pathophysiology, technical aspects, preprocedural preparation, anesthetic management, and postprocedural challenges of many new procedures such as navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial valve deployment, and bronchial thermoplasty. Introduction: The rise of opioid-free anaesthesia (OFA) aims to reduce postoperative pain while reducing opioid-related side effects during surgery. However, the various adjuvant agents used in OFA complicate the evaluation of their effectiveness and risks. Recent reviews question the clinical benefits of OFA, highlighting the need for thorough evaluation. This protocol describes a network meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of OFA with opioid-based anaesthesia and will identify key components for optimal postoperative outcomes.

Native Americans are disproportionately affected by suicide, with mortality rates that are 2.5 higher than White and non-Hispanic Americans. Nursing staff in an Indian Health Service (IHS) outpatient and specialty care clinic inconsistently assess for suicide risk before outpatient and specialty clinic appointments due to sporadic use of screening tools and lack of confidence to ask patients suicide risk screening questions. Advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs) respond poorly to all therapies, including the first-line treatment, chemotherapy, the latest immunotherapies, and KRAS-targeting therapies. Despite an enormous effort to improve therapeutic efficacy in late-stage PDAC patients, effective treatment modalities remain an unmet medical challenge. To change the status quo, we explored the key signaling networks underlying the universally poor response of PDAC to therapy. Here, we report a previously unknown chemo-induced symbiotic signaling circuit that adaptively confers chemoresistance in patients and mice with advanced PDAC. Retrotransposable elements (RTEs) are common mobile genetic elements comprising ∼42% of the human genome. RTEs play critical roles in gene regulation and function, but how they are specifically involved in complex diseases is largely unknown. Here, we investigate the cellular heterogeneity of RTEs using 12 single-cell transcriptome profiles covering three neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. We identify cell type marker RTEs in neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and oligodendrocyte precursor cells that are related to these diseases. The differential expression analysis reveals the landscape of dysregulated RTE expression, especially L1s, in excitatory neurons of multiple neurodegenerative diseases. …

Objective: Sociodemographic, lifestyle, and medical variables influence total testosterone (T) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations. The relationship between these factors and "free" T remains unclear. We examined 21 sociodemographic, lifestyle, and medical predictors influencing calculated free T (cFT) in community-dwelling men across ages.

Design: This is a cross-sectional analysis in 20 631 participants in the Androgens in Men Study.

Methods: Individual participant data (IPD) were provided by 9 cohorts. Total T was determined using mass spectrometry, SHBG using immunoassays, and cFT using the Vermeulen formula. Associations were analyzed using 2-stage random effects IPD meta-analyses.

The diagnosis and management of cardiac arrhythmias are particularly well suited to benefit from these easily accessible consumer health technologies. In particular, smartphone-based and wrist-worn wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) technology can facilitate relatively inexpensive, long-term rhythm monitoring. This article presents the philosophy, innovative methods, and final aesthetic synthesis of a collaborative arts-based research project about the lived experience of COVID-19. The project was initiated in 2020 and completed in 2022. Nineteen international arts-based research scholars participated as co-researchers, submitting their arts-based and narrative responses to the project. The six-member core research team guiding the project collected and organized the submissions while simultaneously entering into immersive, iterative, dynamic, arts-based data generation, dialogic analytic and syntheses processes with co-researchers, and each other. Place-based socio-economic and racial inequities contribute to health disparities among people with HIV (PWH). We used geographic ecological momentary assessment (GEMA) methodologies to explore the interplay between psychosocial outcomes in daily diaries and community spatial measures among PWH in New Orleans. PWH (N = 69) were recruited from a clinic-based cohort study. Micro-longitudinal data were collected via smartphone-based daily diaries and geospatial tracking over 14 days. PURPOSE: To evaluate how build orientation affects the fabrication trueness of additively manufactured implant-supported complete arch prostheses by comparing them to subtractively manufactured high-impact polymer-based prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An edentulous maxillary model with four implants at canine and first molar regions bilaterally was digitized (ATOS Core 80 5MP) to design a reference implant-supported complete arch prosthesis standard tessellation language file (RF-STL). Objective: To create a resource guide on closed and relocated historical hospitals in the southern region of Louisiana, documenting rural and urban hospitals with their address, years open, interesting facts, and photographs if available.
