Through the use of genetic sequencing, molecular variants driving autoimmunity are increasingly identified in patients with chronic and refractory immune cytopenias. With the goal of discovering genetic variants that predispose to pediatric immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) or increase risk for chronic disease, we conducted a genome-wide association study in a large multi-institutional cohort of pediatric patients with ITP. A total of 591 patients were genotyped using an Illumina Global Screening Array BeadChip. Pityriasis rosea is a self-limiting skin disorder that can occur in pediatric patients. We report an atypical presentation of a 23-month-old male with a generalized rash similar in appearance to pityriasis rosea. We then review the literature on pityriasis rosea and its application to pediatrics. Our patient had the rash as the only presentation which was also atypical in appearance as opposed to the regular rashes seen with pityriasis rosea which makes this case further interesting. We only treated the case symptomatically and the patient had spontaneous resolution of symptoms.

In this paper, we investigated the use of screen printing for the fabrication of a non-invasive wearable sensor, aimed at achieving accurate and continuous measurement of respiratory rate. The developed sensor was clinically evaluated on 15 healthy human participants, demonstrating its potential for point-of-care testing. Wearable sensors are emerging as the future of continuous healthcare monitoring by recording crucial physiological parameters that can be processed to monitor existing health conditions and predict future ones. This article addresses the interstate differences in outcomes from the coronavirus disease COVID-19 pandemic by focusing on state capacity. State capacity refers to states’ ability to create and implement policy. We posit that states want to limit death and destruction within their borders. COVID-19 created an instance in which states had a shared, preferred outcome but had very different levels of success. Using a novel measure of state capacity that allows for subnational comparisons – and is independent of ideological political will – we show that states with greater capacity experienced fewer excess deaths during 2020 and more successfully distributed …

Semiquantitative assessment of coronary artery calcification (CAC) on baseline planning non-gated chest computed tomography (CT) scans may help further risk stratify patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the association between CAC and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE; myocardial infarction or stroke) and assess the utility of semiquantitative assessment of CAC.

This thesis addressed nerolidol’s potential therapeutic and protective effects on bilateral ureteral obstruction-induced uropathy in rats. Obstructive uropathy stands as a notable contributor to acute kidney injury (AKI), accounting for 5-10% of all AKI cases worldwide, with a particularly high prevalence among the elderly, constituting 22% of AKI cases in this age group. Purpose: This study examines dental hygienists' perceptions of dental therapy in Washington State. Methods: A cross-sectional survey utilizing a Likert-scale questionnaire was conducted among dental hygienists recruited from Washington State Dental Jobs Facebook groups. Descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation analysis examined key variables. Results:Of the 46 participants (n=46), 72% reported that they believed dental therapy could improve access to care in underserved areas. Concerns about current educational standards for safe practice were noted. 11% expressed interest in pursuing a dental therapy degree within the next five years, motivated by interest and career opportunities. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive type of primary brain tumors due in part to cell-intrinsic and cell-extrinsic mechanisms. The ability of GBM tumor to not only resist conventional therapies but also induce an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) is thought to underlie the failure of immunotherapies. Thus, strategies to target both tumor cells and immunosuppressive immune cells, such as tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), are of great interest. BACKGROUND: Exacerbations of noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (bronchiectasis) are associated with reduced health-related quality of life and increased mortality, likelihood of hospitalisation and lung function decline. This study investigated patient clinical characteristics associated with exacerbation frequency. METHODS: A cross-sectional cohort study of patients ≥ 18 years with bronchiectasis enrolled in the US Bronchiectasis and Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) Research Registry (BRR) September 2008-March 2020. Due to the mortality and morbidity and the increased healthcare costs associated with HTN, nursing staff need to have knowledge to control and help patients manage the condition. HTN disproportionately affects African American men due to non-adherence to medication, lifestyle issues, and health disparities. The allosteric SERCA (Sarcoplasmic/Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca²⁺-ATPase) activator CDN1163 has been recently added to the group of pharmacological tools for probing SERCA function. We chose to investigate the effects of the compound on T lymphocyte Ca²⁺ stores, using the well-described Jurkat T lymphocyte as a reliable cell system for Ca²⁺ signaling pathways. Background: An estimated 30-50% of severely injured patients with traumatic injuries will experience hypothermia. As a result of hypothermia, several clinical manifestations such as impaired coagulation, dissociation of the oxygen curve, cardiac arrhythmias, reduced cardiac output and death. Little evidence has been published promoting specific patient re-warming protocols and the best rewarming methods, active versus passive. Few studies have focused on the pre-hospitalization treatment for hypothermia and the overall effectiveness of interventions to mitigate hypothermia to reduce morbidity and mortality. Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is plagued by failures across the cancer care continuum, leading to frequent late-stage diagnoses and high mortality. We evaluated the effectiveness of mailed outreach invitations plus patient navigation to promote HCC screening process completion in patients with cirrhosis.

Methods: Between April 2018 and September 2021, we conducted a multicentre pragmatic randomised clinical trial comparing mailed outreach plus patient navigation for HCC screening (n=1436) versus usual care with visit-based screening (n=1436) among patients with cirrhosis at three US health systems. With this staff education project, I aimed to educate nurses at the project site hospital about the Code Lavender program, a mental health intervention designed to address nurse burnout. Nurse burnout has risen significantly post-COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to high turnover rates and compromising patient care. Nurses are experiencing increased levels of stress, depression, and suicidal ideation, which has led to feelings of being overwhelmed, overworked, and quitting the profession, exacerbating staffing shortages and patient care hazards.
