Minimizing Fasting Requirements To Maximize Patient Satisfaction Prior To A Scheduled Cardiac Catheterization, Kierra Thies
Minimizing Fasting Requirements To Maximize Patient Satisfaction Prior To A Scheduled Cardiac Catheterization, Kierra Thies
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
Background: Patients are often kept NPO (nil per os), or “nothing by mouth,” longer than necessary before cardiac catheterization procedures. Local Problem: Patients scheduled for cardiac catheterization procedures receive instructions to begin fasting at midnight on the day of their procedure regardless of their scheduled procedural start time. This directive results in patient dissatisfaction as patients are fasting longer than current guideline recommendation.
Methods: The facility updated its order set to align with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) fasting guidelines for scheduled cardiac catheterizations. To evaluate patient satisfaction, a 6-item survey was administered to 169 individuals undergoing cardiac catheterization. …
Impact Of Acuity-Based Assignments On The Satisfaction And Burnout Of Inpatient Rehabilitation Nurses, Madelyn Miller Smith
Impact Of Acuity-Based Assignments On The Satisfaction And Burnout Of Inpatient Rehabilitation Nurses, Madelyn Miller Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
Background: With half of healthcare workers reporting burnout, job dissatisfaction and burnout are nursing epidemics. Staffing shortages and heavy workloads are leading dissatisfiers. Acuity-based assignments (ABAs) can predict patient needs and equitably distribute workload among nurses.
Local problem: Nurses of a 21-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility identified burnout related to workload. There was no standard practice for creating assignments, and the existing acuity measure was not rehab-specific.
Methods: An ABA tool was implemented over 12 weeks. Nurse satisfaction and burnout were measured with an abbreviated Copenhagen Burnout Inventory and the Nurse Satisfaction with the Quality of Care Scale, which were administered …

Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Introduction: Children growing up in arid and semi-arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face heightened risks, often resulting in poor developmental outcomes. In Kenya, the arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) exhibit the lowest health and developmental indicators among children. Despite these risks, some children grow up successfully and overcome the challenges. However, there is limited comprehensive data on sources of risks and resilience in these children, particularly research that incorporates community perspectives and indigenous knowledge. Systematic documentation of factors influencing child outcomes is crucial for understanding the overall burden, informing policy and implementing targeted interventions. This study aimed at …

From Hallways To Healing: Reconceptualizing Schools As Access Points For Adolescent Mental Health By Fostering Student Agency And Supportive Spaces, Jordyn Nattrass
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Adolescents across the United States are struggling with their mental health in record numbers, often without access to adequate support. This paper examines the role of schools as critical access points for all students to receive mental health interventions. I propose the implementation of a school-wide, student-led mental health program that every student participates in during homeroom, with the additional support of a dedicated mental health space. Grounded in the principles of Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), the program is designed by students, for students, with the goal of fostering student leadership skills. Unlike existing programs that will be explored …

Mental Health And Belongingness Of Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students: A Mixed Methods Study Centering Black Student Voices, Robyn Redline
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Background: Despite efforts to increase recruitment and enrollment, the physical therapy profession lacks Black students and clinicians. Racially marginalized students have higher rates of academic difficulty during physical therapy education (PTE) than White students. Mental health and belongingness have been proposed as prerequisites for reaching academic achievement and attaining one’s full potential. Conversely, poor mental health and lack of belongingness during PTE may contribute to the underrepresentation of Black Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students and clinicians. Yet not enough is known about the relationships between mental health, belongingness, and the academic achievement of DPT students. Purpose: This study aimed …
Comparative Analysis Of Gut Microbiota In Post-Mortem Chronic Alcoholics Versus Minimal To No Alcohol Users In The Thai Population, Laiba Pervez
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Chronic alcohol consumption induces long-term disruption of the gut microbiota, contributing to inflammation, metabolic imbalance, and impaired intestinal integrity. This study investigated 24 postmortem gut microbiota samples from the Thai population, including 12 chronic alcoholic and 12 non-alcoholic cadavers, focusing on cecal and fecal samples to identify site-specific microbial signatures of alcohol-associated dysbiosis. Following DNA extraction, the V3–V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Data were processed in QIIME for OTU clustering and taxonomic profiling. Alpha (Shannon, Chao1, ACE) and beta (Bray–Curtis) diversity were analyzed with PERMANOVA (p< 0.05) while LEfSe, cladogram, and STAMP analyses identified differentially abundant taxa.. At the phylum level, alcoholic cecal samples (AC) showed a decrease in Firmicutes (59.07%) and increases in Proteobacteria (5.54%), Fusobacteria (8.48%), and Actinobacteria (2.78%) compared with controls (NAC). The rise in Actinobacteria was statistically significant. The class Bacilli was also elevated, reflecting a more oxygenated and inflammatory intestinal environment. At the genus level, Paeniclostridium was enriched in alcoholics, while the butyrate-producing Coprococcus was reduced, suggesting impaired SCFA metabolism and gut barrier function. In fecal samples (AF vs NAF), phylum-level differences were minimal, although Clostridium sensu stricto 1 was notably higher in alcoholics, consistent with inflammation-associated dysbiosis. When comparing gut regions, distinct spatial heterogeneity was observed. Within the alcoholic group, Firmicutes were more abundant in cecum, while Actinobacteria were lower compared to feces. Among controls, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes were enriched in feces, whereas Firmicutes predominated in the cecum. Alpha diversity analysis using ACE and Chao1 indices showed significant differences between cecal and fecal samples of the control group. Overall, postmortem gut microbiota retained distinct alcoholassociated signatures, with the cecum preserving clearer microbial patterns than feces. These findings highlight the cecum’s potential as a reliable site for detecting alcohol-related dysbiosis in forensics.

Bridging Clinical Capacity And Real-World Performance: Upper And Lower Limb Accelerometry In Pediatric Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation, Youngsub Hwang, Jeong-Yi Kwon
Bridging Clinical Capacity And Real-World Performance: Upper And Lower Limb Accelerometry In Pediatric Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation, Youngsub Hwang, Jeong-Yi Kwon
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy (CP) has progressively evolved from therapist-centered, impairment-focused models to child- and family-centered approaches that emphasize real-world participation. This narrative review summarizes conceptual and practical shifts in CP rehabilitation, highlighting the distinction between motor capacity and real-world performance. Accelerometry is a critical objective tool for assessing lower and upper limb physical activity. Devices such as StepWatch and ActiGraph provide ecologically valid data on lower limb activity levels, step counts, and energy expenditure. Studies have shown reduced physical activity in children with CP compared to their typically developing peers, with variations in age and GMFCS …
Assessing How Patients With Spinal Cord Injury Are Affected By Climate Change And Extreme Weather: A Scoping Review, Lien-Chieh Lin, Hung-Chou Chen, Tsan-Hon Liou
Assessing How Patients With Spinal Cord Injury Are Affected By Climate Change And Extreme Weather: A Scoping Review, Lien-Chieh Lin, Hung-Chou Chen, Tsan-Hon Liou
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Climate change and the rising frequency of extreme weather events (EWEs) pose significant challenges to vulnerable populations, particularly individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). These patients are at greater risk due to impaired thermoregulation, limited mobility, poor sensation, and dependence on caregivers or adaptive equipment, increasing their exposure to climate-related hazards and disrupting healthcare access during disasters. Although climate change impacts on the general population are well-documented, research on specific disability groups like SCI patients remains limited. This scoping review investigates how SCI patients perceive and experience health risks from climate change and EWEs, as well as factors influencing their …

The Effects Of 10-Ml Versus 40-Ml Capsular Dilatation Under Ultrasound Guidance In Patients With Adhesive Capsulitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Kollatee Buranarach, Rawipa Khunnarong, Chanasak Hathaiareerug
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background: Adhesive capsulitis causes pain and limited mobility. Hydrodilatation is an effective, minimally invasive treatment, but the optimal volume is unclear. This study compares the pain and function improvement from large-volume (40 mL) versus small-volume (10 mL) ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation in patients with adhesive capsulitis.
Methods: This study was conducted at Phramongkutklao Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, with Thai adults aged 20 and older who had adhesive capsulitis. Participants had a pain score of 4 or higher on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and limited movement in at least two directions. They were divided into two groups. One group received ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation …

Long-Term Benefits Of An Integrative Scoliosis-Specific Rehabilitation Program For High-Risk Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Yu-Shan Fu, Lin-Fen Hsieh, Julian Wang, Wei-Chen Chang, Ya-Fang Liu, Hsuan-Han Lin
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background/Purpose: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity in adolescents, but the optimal combination therapy remains to be established. Therefore, our purpose is to investigate the long-term benefits of a scoliosis-specific rehabilitation program integrating pattern-specific manual therapy, Schroth Best Practice exercises, and Gensingen brace application for patients with AIS.
Methods: The retrospective cohort study was conducted in an outpatient clinic, including 54 patients with AIS at a high risk of progression who participated in the aforementioned program. The primary outcomes were the angle of trunk rotation (ATR) and Cobb angle, whereas the secondary outcome was the lateral …
Principles And Practices Of Selecting Screening Tools For Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: A Narrative Review, Yu-Hsuan Lai, Tyng-Guey Wang, Nai-Hsin Meng
Principles And Practices Of Selecting Screening Tools For Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: A Narrative Review, Yu-Hsuan Lai, Tyng-Guey Wang, Nai-Hsin Meng
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a potentially life-threatening condition, particularly affecting individuals with neurological diseases, head and neck cancers, and age-related issues. Its prevalence in the general population ranges from 2.3% to 16%, with much higher rates among patients with stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury. Dysphagia is prevalent in geriatric and long-term care settings, where over 50% of elderly residents may experience swallowing difficulties. Given its high prevalence and serious consequences, early detection through dysphagia screening in at-risk populations is essential. Since the 1990s, numerous screening tools for dysphagia have been developed, with over 160 non-instrumental tools identified in review …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a lidocaine patch on peripheral nerve conduction.
Methods: Fifteen healthy volunteers with no symptoms or signs of neuropathy in either upper limb were recruited for this double-blind, placebo-controlled study over a 10-month period. A lidocaine patch or a placebo patch was applied to the volar aspect of the wrist during sleep. The treatment procedure was repeated for 14 consecutive nights. Nerve conduction studies were performed and analyzed at each assessment point. All participants were re-evaluated, with electrophysiological studies of the median and ulnar nerves repeated at 1 week and 2 weeks …

Nikethamide, N,N-diethyl-3-pyridinecarboxamide (Coramine®) is a central nervous system stimulant at one time used therapeutically in human medicine but no longer marketed in the US. Nikethamide is classified a Drug Class 1, Penalty Class A substance by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) and as a Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) SO or banned Stimulant that lacks FDA approval. Identifications of Nikethamide or its metabolite N-Ethylnicotinamide in racing samples can result in significant penalties in horse racing. Nikethamide is rapidly metabolized to N-Ethylnicotinamide, which remains detectable in plasma and urine leading to its use as a regulatory “marker” of …
