In response to a significant tuberculosis outbreak in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties, Kansas, this study presents a compartmental model of ordinary differential equations to evaluate the impact of standard antibiotic treatment. The model incorporates latent, active, and treated disease states. Parameter values were informed by epidemiological data and uncertain parameter value ranges were explored systematically through uncertainty analysis using constrained Latin hypercube sampling. Cumulative infections and deaths, and the basic reproduction number, were computed over a five-year simulation period. Background: Mucin 13 (MUC13), a transmembrane glycoprotein, plays a crucial role in the progression of epithelial cancers, particularly liver and pancreatic cancers. It is frequently overexpressed in malignant cells, disrupting cellular adhesion and facilitating invasive behavior. The extracellular domain and phosphorylation potential in its cytoplasmic region connect MUC13 to oncogenic signaling pathways, making it a valuable target for immunotherapy. Ischemic hepatitis (IH) results from shock-related conditions that impair oxygenated blood flow to the liver, causing hepatocyte death. Diagnosis relies largely on clinical history due to the absence of specific diagnostic tests and limited ability to predict outcomes. This study applies machine learning methods to real-world IH patient data to improve outcome prediction. Biomedical indicators analyzed include creatinine, international normalized ratio (INR), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and bilirubin. Using a combined two-photon excitation fluorescence (TPEF) and second-harmonic generation (SHG) approach, our research seeks to further the quantification of skin components in a quest toward diagnostic tools with higher accuracy and reduced invasiveness for patients. Images are taken both ex vivo and in vivo, of healthy and malignant tissues, with a 600 × 600 micron field of view. We demonstrate how computational analysis can effectively exploit signals emitted by skin to provide diagnostic insight.

This paper summarizes a project completed by nursing students at a women’s day center and transitional housing program in Washington state that supports women experiencing homelessness as they work toward stability. The center provides daytime services to more than 200 women daily who experience chronic stress, trauma, limited access to healthcare, and environmental barriers. OBJECTIVES: Accurate identification of acute stroke by the Emergency Medical Dispatch Centre (EMDC) is essential for timely treatment and efficient resource use. However, stroke mimics-conditions resembling stroke can often lead to overtriage, complicating emergency care. We aimed to quantify EMDC stroke overtriage and compare characteristics of stroke mimics with confirmed stroke cases.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Rural-urban disparities are well documented in pediatric healthcare, influencing access, service organization, and outcomes. However, whether these differences extend to the domain of nursing care remains unclear. This study examined the association between degree of urbanization and nursing complexity among children admitted to a single tertiary-care pediatric hospital, comparing clinical, organizational, and nursing characteristics across geographic groups.

METHODS: Routinely collected electronic nursing documentation and hospital administrative records were retrospectively examined in a tertiary-care pediatric hospital in Rome, Italy. Children aged 2 to < 18 years were consecutively included. Degree of urbanization was defined using the ISTAT-derived DEGURBA classification. The study outcome for nursing complexity corresponded to the number of nursing diagnoses documented at hospital admission. Descriptive analyses and a multivariable negative binomial regression model assessed the association between urbanization and nursing complexity, adjusting for age, sex, DRG weight, number of medical diagnoses, and chronic conditions.

Mitochondria–endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contact sites (MERCS) are nanoscopic, dynamic platforms integrating metabolism, signaling, and stress responses to regulate cell fate. These nanoscopic interfaces remodel continuously to meet the demands of proliferating, quiescent, and senescent cells. We synthesize evidence that MERCS actively coordinate local Ca2+ signaling, non-vesicular lipid transfer, and proteostasis to shape mitochondrial function and cellular homeostasis. We discuss how MERCS architecture changes across the cell cycle and during arrest, distinguishing adaptive from maladaptive remodeling, and consider therapeutic potential in aging and age-related disease.

Improving medication adherence in adolescents who had a liver transplant (iMALT), a prospective, block-randomized, single-blind, controlled multisite study in 13 pediatric transplant centers, used the medication level variability index (MLVI) to identify nonadherent adolescents. It compared a 2-year remote behavioral telemetric intervention (TI) that focused on adherence and addressed barriers to standard of care (SOC). The primary endpoint was the composite incidence of centrally determined (3 masked pathologists) rejection, death, retransplantation, or consent withdrawal. However, most research on food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages is cross-sectional, which is problematic as both change frequently. Therefore, this study assessed how changes in food insecurity were associated with changes in the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages among those in the intervention and control groups of TX Sprouts. Background: Emodin exhibits various pharmacological activities, including hepatoprotective effects. However, its clinical application is limited by poor absorption and low oral bioavailability. This study aimed to optimize emodin through benzoylation and to assess the hepatoprotective potential of the resulting derivatives integrating bioinformatics and in vitro methods.

Methods: We conducted network pharmacology, molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to predict potential targets and interactions of benzoylated emodin derivatives. The derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for cytotoxicity using the MTT assay. The hepatoprotective effects were assessed in vitro using a paracetamol-induced HepG2 cell injury model.

The SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) framework is widely used to structure communication in healthcare settings. However, its traditional use emphasizes information exchange rather than practice change. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) education requires translation of evidence into action through measurable practice change and leadership engagement. This manuscript introduces SBAR-A, an adaptation of the SBAR framework that adds an “Action” component requiring application of evidence-based interventions. SBAR-A integrates planning, leadership, and the application of knowledge to practice. This framework provides a structured approach for bridging communication and practice change within DNP clinical scholarship.
