The Effect Of Vaccine Mandates On Disease Spread: Evidence From College Covid-19 Mandates, Riley K. Acton, Wenjia Cao, Emily E. Cook, Scott A. Imberman, Michael F. Lovenheim

Research Collection School Of Economics

Nearly 700 4-year U.S. colleges mandated students receive COVID-19 vaccinations in fall 2021. Using data on college policies and county health, we estimate how mandates affect surrounding communities. Event studies from August to November 2021 show that mandates covering all colleges in a county reduced COVID-19 deaths by 5.6 per 100,000 persons, a 4.6% reduction in the U.S. total during this period. Mandates reduced COVID cases by 504 and ICU admissions by 16.2 per 100,000, though we see no statistically significant impact on hospitalizations. Impacts are larger in counties with larger college populations and low estimated ex-ante student vaccination rates.

Due to limited published data assessing pediatric hematopoietic cell donor experiences, we previously conducted one of the largest quantitative investigations of pediatric donor experiences and health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) at the time (RDSafe). Findings from RDSafe demonstrated that a subset of pediatric HC donors experienced very poor HRQoL; unfortunately, that dataset addressed only a limited number of factors, and key associations explaining this poor HRQoL were not found. In this study, our goal was to address that deficit by describing pre-donation donor HRQoL in detail and identifying factors across five key domains that were associated with donor HRQoL. INTRODUCTION: Delays in care can lead to poor health outcomes and suboptimal patient and family experiences. We aimed to reduce the average wait time for gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures (procedure request to procedure completion) from 145 to 15 days (a 90% reduction) within 4 months (November 2023 to March 2024).

METHODS: A3 problem-solving methodology was used. The primary intervention was a multiday, multidisciplinary improvement workshop. Risk factors (RF) for permanent pacemaker (PPM) placement in cardiac surgery include valvular operations and redo operations. We aim to identify RF for PPM placement prior to discharge (DC) specifically among redo mitral valvular operations, and to analyze outcomes in this population. Our retrospective review considered 943 patients undergoing redo MV operations between 01/2002 and 12/2021, excluding patients experiencing in-hospital death within 48 hours of their operation and patients with existing PPM or implanted cardiac defibrillator (ICD). The assumption that blood adheres to vessel walls with zero tangential velocity component, the so-called "no-slip" boundary condition, is a foundational premise of cardiovascular fluid dynamics. Whether the no-slip condition holds in vivo, however, remains unknown. Seven healthy adult volunteers underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging. With four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging of the descending thoracic aorta and modeling blood as a Navier-Stokes fluid, near-wall blood velocities were quantified, and wall shear stress was calculated based on the measured velocity fields. Within the Navier-Stokes data assimilation framework, tangential wall velocities of ∼30-80% of the mean luminal velocity were consistently obtained. These …

Background: Effects of neoadjuvant immunotherapy (NIT) before liver resection are not well-described in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Survival and R0 resection rates in HCC patients undergoing curative-intent resection with or without NIT were evaluated.

Methods: A retrospective study of stage I-III HCC patients undergoing hepatectomy from the 2017–2022 National Cancer Database was performed. Patients receiving NIT were exactly matched 1:3 to non-NIT patients by clinical stage. Primary outcomes were margin positivity, 30- and 90-day mortality, and overall survival.

The management of locally-advanced, resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is undergoing a major shift driven by the integration of neoadjuvant immunotherapy (nIO). Vaccination, a fundamental strategy for infectious disease prevention, presents unique challenges in individuals with altered immunity. These populations include individuals with inborn errors of immunity, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, solid organ transplants, hematopoietic stem cell transplants, biologic and immunosuppressive therapies, and pregnancy. Despite concerns regarding variable vaccine responses, altered efficacy, and safety profiles, these groups remain under-represented in clinical trials. Despite increasing recognition of pediatric obesity as a chronic disease, many clinicians continue to rely on "watchful waiting," assuming pubertal growth will mitigate excess weight and metabolic risk. Current evidence contradicts this approach. Children under 12 years of age with obesity frequently demonstrate clinically significant metabolic disease, including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, dysglycemia, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), often before symptoms emerge. Puberty does not reverse these processes; rather, physiologic pubertal insulin resistance amplifies preexisting metabolic dysfunction and accelerates disease progression. The Nuclear Factor of Activated T Cells (NFAT) family comprises closely related transcription factors. Numerous biological processes including angiogenesis, invasion, migration, proliferation, and cell survival are regulated by the NFAT family. NFATs are overexpressed and have increased transcriptional activity in a variety of human solid tumors and hematological cancers. Beyond tumor cell-intrinsic roles, NFAT has also emerged as an important regulator of the tumor microenvironment (TME), where it can influence immune cell behavior and contribute to mechanisms of immune evasion. Purpose The PREgnancy Care Integrating Translational Science, Everywhere (PRECISE)-DYAD Study is a prospective observational cohort designed to investigate health outcomes among mother-child pairs (dyads) over the first 3 years of life in two contexts from sub-Saharan Africa.
