Cerebral Vascular Response During A Hypercapnic Challenge With And Without Simultaneous Activation Of The Sympathetic Nervous System, Sajjad Moradi, James E. Brown, John Kolade, Hannah E. Nagib, R Matthew Brothers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cerebral vascular function/health is crucial for the maintenance of neurocognitive function and prevention of various neurocognitive and cerebral vascular conditions/diseases. Cerebral vascular function is commonly assessed by evaluating the vasodilatory response to a hypercapnic stimuli. A larger vasodilatory response is associated with more positive outcomes, while a blunted response is associated with an increased risk of cerebral vascular and neurocognitive diseases in the future. However, it remains unclear whether simultaneous activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) can attenuate cerebral vasodilation during a hypercapnic challenge. PURPOSE: Therefore, this study tested the hypothesis that cerebral vascular vasodilatory responsiveness to a …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Mental stress superimposed on prolonged sitting is a common encounter. Both conditions are known to induce vascular dysfunction and impair executive function. While physical activity during sitting can mitigate these adverse effects, such activity is not always permissible for college students studying for important exams and office workers approaching critical deadlines. Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) of the lower limb muscles has been proposed as a potential alternative to voluntary exercise and might help preserve vascular and cognitive function under these conditions. PURPOSE: This pilot study investigated whether EMS could attenuate arterial stiffening and cognitive decline induced by combined prolonged …

Aging is associated with declines in functional fitness and cognitive function, which may impact the quality of life in older adults. Developing a safe and active training program as an initial strategy is critical for the elderly population to maintain physical and mental well-being. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week chair-based exercise intervention on functional fitness, cognitive function, and nutritional status in older female adults. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy female participants aged 55 to 80 years were randomly assigned to the exercise group (Ex, N=19; Age: 64±1 years; BMI: 24.7±0.8 kg/m²) or the control …

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a rehabilitation technique for individuals with physical function limitations and mobility impairments, however, the potential for NMES to improve metabolic health is unclear. PURPOSE: To evaluate the acute and long-term effects of NMES on blood glucose and substrate utilization. METHODS: The study recruited forty-five sedentary overweight/obese participants (Age: 40 ± 13 years; BMI: 37 ± 7 kg/m2) with hyperglycemia (fasting glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL or 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) value ≥ 140 mg/dL). For the acute study, participants underwent 30 minutes of NMES on both quadricep muscles. Blood glucose levels …

While numerous methods for assessing body fat percentage have been validated, it is important to understand that using results from one modality does not guarantee the same on another. It is also important, when weighing the pros and cons of each modality, that the reliability of each approach should also be taken into consideration. PURPOSE: This study compared body fat percentages (PBF) derived from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), bioelectrical impedance (BIA), and air displacement plethysmography (ADP). Reliability was also determined for each modality. METHODS: 47 adults, aged 18+, were assessed for total body composition with a Lunar iDXA (GE …

Type 2 diabetes is a multifaceted condition characterized by disruptions in insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion, and associated metabolic defects such as impaired glucose and lipid metabolism and metabolic inflexibility. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is a key diagnostic tool for assessing glucose tolerance and metabolic function. Glucose response curve morphology and timing of the glucose peak (at 30 minutes vs >30 minutes) provide valuable insights into the balance between insulin secretion and glucose tolerance. PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate glucose curve morphology and glucose peak time as potential markers of metabolic health, focusing on their associations with …
