Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Successful animal husbandry is fundamentally dependent on the efficient reproduction and preservation of young stock. Not only are losses among the latter a prolific source of direct economic damage, but they also tend to create an equally serious disadvantage of a more indirect nature. Losses of young animals, unless a reduction of our live stock population can be tolerated, necessitate the setting aside of a larger number of females for purely reproductive purposes than would be required if such losses were not a factor.

Mercy's Messenger was a newsletter describing the work of The Children's Mercy Hospital and soliciting donations, frequently including stories of young patients. This issue features Dr. Richardson's appeal for funding for a research laboratory to seek cures or better diagnosis and treatment of childhood diseases.

The September 1929 issue is marked Vol. 1, no. 2 although many earlier issues of Mercy's Messenger exist.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The "walking disease" of Northwestern Nebraska is essentially an enzootic necrobiosis and cirrhosis of the liver due to a toxic agent and does not materially differ from similar disorders occurring in other regions or countries. The disease affects horses and cattle but it is most commonly encountered in the former. The disease in all its clinical and pathological manifestations may be reproduced with the utmost fidelity by the feeding with plants of Senecio riddellii.

The greatest reason for using an anesthetic is to reduce pain for the patient. If we can do an operation without pain we are doing a great beneficial service to humanity. Hippocrates says "Divinum est opus sedan dolarum," meaning Divine is the work to subdue pain. In some cases it is best not to give an anesthetic as in case of cavity preparation which is very near the pulp. The pulp may be permanently injured by ever instrumentation.

An attempt to awaken an ideal in speech in the community is of vital importance. There is a need for intelligible, clear, forceful, speech with accuracy, precision, and delicacy, as outstanding characteristics. Proper provision should be made to remedy the present situation which fails to conform with this criterion. "Good speech ls universally recognized today as an economic, social, and cultural asset of the first rank. Yet in the United States the problem of defective speech grows daily more acute."

Celluloid gives the most natural appearance of all the plastic vegetable bases used in making dentures. It closely resembles porcelain in the translucent live-tissue color of the mucous membrane and gums. In some cases, it proves very satisfactory while it discolors and quickly disintegrates in some mouths. Vulcanite is usually more durable. The value of celluloid depends upon the care given it by the possessor and the manipulation of the material while under construction.

The practice of dentistry was, formally divided into three departments, viz: operative dentistry, mechanical dentistry and oral surgery. Operative dentistry included the extraction of teeth (sometimes classed as surgery), all procedures for the preservation or regulation of the natural teeth, and the placing of crowns on natural roots. Mechanical dentistry included the supplying of substitutes whose roots as well as crowns had been lost, the making of splints for broken jaws, obturators and vela for cleft palates, and appliances for regulating teeth.
