Up to the year 1860 surgery and sepsis were practically synonymous. Surgical procedures, accomplished as they were without the use of antiseptics, could not, of necessity, be done with the greatest of care, for the time element was the chief factor in success. In consequence, infections and diseases, as for example, pyemia, septicemia, erysipelas and hospital gangrene were the rule rather than the exception. Surgery was confined practically to amputations, while thoracic and abdominal operations were almost unknown.

Taylor, it is said that Egyptian mummies exist, showing evidences of gold fillings, but at present their whereabouts are unknown. The History of Dental Surgery, Vol. 1, by Chas. R.E. Perhaps one of the most puzzling of all dystrophies of the teeth is the macroscopical malformation called "Mottled Enamel".

This peculiarity is characterized by white, brown, and corn-colored opaque areas of enamel surrounded by apparently normal enamel. Upon examination, this enamel presents a smooth surface, though at times it may be slightly pitted. Nevertheless, the surface remains highly polished. If this surface is broken up with a bur, it is found to be of a chalky granular consistency, the whitish material at times containing the yellowish pigment which may occupy the entire thickness of the enamel. Dr. Samuel Clark Red was “the county physician of Harris County, one of the organizers of the Harris County Medical Society, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and president of the Texas Medical Association.”
