Extracranial-Intracranial Vascular Shunt Procedures, Romas Sakalas Jan 1976

Extracranial-Intracranial Vascular Shunt Procedures, Romas Sakalas

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Cerebrovascular occlusive disease has been and continues to be a leading cause of death and disability throughout the world. In the United States there are about 400,000 new strokes each year. Some 90% of strokes are a result of vascular occlusion of the extracranial circulation. Surgical treatment of occlusive vascular diseases, principally carotid endarterectomy, has become an accepted method of treatment of a large number of patients. However, only about 70% of patients with cerebrovascular disease have surgically accessible lesions in the extracranial circulation. The remaining 30% are a result of intracranial occlusive disease which cannot at present be treated …

Manipulating The Genetic Code: Jurisprudential Conundrums, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1976

Manipulating The Genetic Code: Jurisprudential Conundrums, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

This article considers the scientific, legal, ethical, and social issues of the Brave New World of Biotechnology as they existed in 1976 and as they exist — interestingly — today. Central to these issues (e.g., in vitro fertilization, genetic planning) presented in historical context, is consideration of the extent to which freedom of scientific investigation should be allowed and even encouraged by the government. In order to shape normative standards of conduct from which ethical constructs can be developed and policy developed, scientific experimentation must be promoted and designed to safeguard the common good — this, by enhancing opportunities for …

Bulletin No 3966 - Vitamin A And Animal Health, J. Johnson Jan 1976

Bulletin No 3966 - Vitamin A And Animal Health, J. Johnson

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Vitamin A is one of the essential vitamins for animal health. Grazing animals obtain their vitamin A requirements mostly from the carotene in green feed. This carotene is converted to Vitamin A in the intestinal wall and is passed to the liver and to a less extent the kidneys for storage. Some carotene also passes direct to the liver where it is stored before it is converted to vitamin A.

When dry pastures, hay and grains (except maize) are low in carotene content this ability of the animals to store vitamin A means that they usually have enough when there …

A Review Of The Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics And Behavioral Effects Of Procaine In Thoroughbred Horses, Thomas Tobin, J. W. Blake Jan 1976

A Review Of The Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics And Behavioral Effects Of Procaine In Thoroughbred Horses, Thomas Tobin, J. W. Blake

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Since procaine has both local anaesthetic and central stimulant actions its presence in the blood or urine of racing horses is forbidden. After rapid intravenous injection of procaine HC1 (2.5 mg/Kg) in thoroughbred mares plasma levels of this drug fell rapidly (t 1/2 alpha = 5 min) and then more slowly (t 1/2 beta = 50.2 min). These kinetics were well fitted by a two compartment open model (Model I). This model gave an apparent Vdbeta for procaine in the horse of about 3,500 litres. Since procaine was about 45% bound to equine plasma protein this gives a true Vdbeta …
