The articles, all papers done for classes in the university honors program, are divided into three groups. The first group deals with science, especially the area of health care, one of the more practical applications of science in the modern age. The second group consists of three papers done for honor courses in which the major purpose was to expose the student to new areas of consciousness and have them respond orally and verbally to what they read, creative writing. Verbal Interference With Visual Classification: Optimal Processing And Experimental Design, John H. Flowers, Beccy Blair Jan 1976

Verbal Interference With Visual Classification: Optimal Processing And Experimental Design, John H. Flowers, Beccy Blair

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The speed of classification of six alternative ink colors into two categories of three colors each was measured in tasks for which the colors were displayed as either XXXX patterns or incongruent words (Stroop stimuli). Substantial interference from the words occurred when the classification required grouping nonadjacent hues (red, yellow, and blue vs. orange, green, and purple) regardless of whether subjects received exclusive practice with this classification. Interference also occurred when the classification required grouping adjacent hues (red, orange, and yellow vs. green, blue, and purple), but only if this classification was intermixed within blocks of trials with the nonadjacent …

Pyodermas: Diagnosis And Treatment, James J. Leyden Jan 1976

Pyodermas: Diagnosis And Treatment, James J. Leyden

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous infections appear to be rather straightforward at first glance. Major texts of pediatrics and dermatology indicate that the vast majority of pyodermas are due to either Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) or Streptococcus pyogenes and that antibiotics are curative. On closer scrutiny, however, one quickly becomes aware that there is a great deal of nomenclatural confusion with a corresponding lack of clarity regarding therapy – particularly on the point of whether or not topical antibiotics have any place in therapy.

Management Of Cutaneous Malignancy - A Review, Peyton E. Weary Jan 1976

Management Of Cutaneous Malignancy - A Review, Peyton E. Weary

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Skin cancer is the most frequent type of cancer, accounting for about 20% of all cancers in the State of Virginia, and the most common type of skin cancer is the basal cell carcinoma. The basal cell carcinoma is a tumor which is not considered highly malignant because, in general, it does not metastasize, although there have been a few instances in which metastases have occurred. However, such lesions may be quite destructive at times. The typical basal cell carcinoma presents as a waxy, papular or nodular lesion which has a gelatinous or somewhat translucent appearance. Coursing across the surface …

Introduction, Marvin J. Allison

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In 1970, a multidisciplinary study was initiated by the Peruvian government under my direction to evaluate health conditions in a population group which had lived in a relatively stable environment for some 5,000 years. So far, American and Peruvian archeologists, anthropologists, radiologists, anatomic, oral, neuro- and clinical pathologists, chemists, immunologists, an otologist, and students from many different disciplines have been involved in the study which has been supported largely by the National Geographic Society with many individual contributions.

The Documentation Of Communicable Diseases In Peruvian Mummies, Harry P. Dalton, Marvin J. Allison, Alejandro Pezzia Jan 1976

The Documentation Of Communicable Diseases In Peruvian Mummies, Harry P. Dalton, Marvin J. Allison, Alejandro Pezzia

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Communicable disease in Egyptian mummies was documented by Ruffer and Ferguson when early in this century they reported a case of smallpox. A case of schistosomiasis was also reported by Ruffer. Various intestinal parasites have been reported from mummies, and suggestive evidence has been presented for poliomyelitis and tuberculosis. Much of this work was done at a time when good laboratory techniques were not available.

Managment Of Transient Brain Ischemia, Clark H. Millikan Jan 1976

Managment Of Transient Brain Ischemia, Clark H. Millikan

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Cerebrovascular disease is an exciting subject, so complex that we could devote 30 minutes to a discussion of aspirin, dipyridamole, and sulfinpyrazone and their potential actions in the prevention of thromboembolic events. A Classification and Outline of Cerebrovascular Disease II, published in the September-October 1975 issue of Stroke, depicts this complexity. The portion labeled “outline” describes some of the things summarized in this paper.
