The Influence Of Age And Stimuli On The Explanations Of "Same" And "Different" By Young Children, Pamela Callas Senders
The Influence Of Age And Stimuli On The Explanations Of "Same" And "Different" By Young Children, Pamela Callas Senders
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the influence of chronological age and stimuli on the explanations of "same" and "different" by young children. Seventy children, between by young children. the ages of three-years, six-months and nine-years, six-months, selected on the basis of chronological age, normal speech and language development, and normal verbal maturity, were involved as subjects. A test consisting of a series of verbal tasks was administered to each child. The experimenter recorded and later analyzed and classified all responses for each child, following specific guidelines for judging appropriateness of response and assigning each appropriate response to one of three classifications.

The Use Of Telegraphic Reading Material By Aphasic Patients, Sylvia Diane Tovey
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if aphasic patients have significantly more correct answers for telegraphically written material when compared to normally written material.
Twenty subjects from the greater Portland metropolitan area were selected to be included in this study. The ages or the subjects ranged from forty-two through sixty-five years with a mean of fifty-four years.
The test material consisted of two paragraphs controlled for fourth grade grammar and vocabulary and two paragraphs controlled for sixth grade grammar and vocabulary. A normally written and a telegraphically written paragraph were used for each of the four paragraphs for …
Stability Of Perceived Tension As A Function Of The Menstrual Cycle, Paula Englander-Golden, Keith A. Willis, Richard A. Dienstbier
Stability Of Perceived Tension As A Function Of The Menstrual Cycle, Paula Englander-Golden, Keith A. Willis, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The stability of tension judgments among males and females who were either taking or not taking combination low-progestin oral contraceptive pills was investigated. Judgments of interpersonal pressure in videotaped vignettes provided tension measures. The vignettes were presented in two sessions separated by two weeks. Correlations between pressure judgments of .94 for males, .79 for pill females and .40 for non-pill females (all sig < .002) supported the prediction that non-pill females experience the largest fluctuations in tension across the menstrual cycle. A significant number of non-pill females who changed their scores and who changed from midcycle to premenstrual-menstrual phases or vice versa between the two experimental sessions shifted their tension scores in the predicted direction (p < .04). As predicted, non-pill females scoring in the lower half on premenstrual-menstrual symptomatology were more consistent in pressure judgments than those high on symptomatology, with correlations of .51 (sig < .004) and .24 (NS) respectively. Analysis of pressure judgments as a function of menstrual phase and high-low symptomatology indicated a main effect for symptomatology (sig < .01) with the high group perceiving more pressure. Lack of a main effect for menstrual phase was attributed to large individual variations in tension scores. Results were interpreted as indicating physiological causality underlying the variability in tension across the menstrual cycle. Substituting the Repression-Sensitization dimension for symptomatology yielded no significant results which could lead to a psychological interpretation of such variability.

A Comparison Between Modality Acquisition In Children And Modality Reacquisition In Adult Aphasic Patients, Marina Kartas
A Comparison Between Modality Acquisition In Children And Modality Reacquisition In Adult Aphasic Patients, Marina Kartas
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
A review of the literature reveals speculation as to whether the communicative behaviors of adult aphasic patients bear some relationship to the communicative performances displayed by children. It has been purported that adult aphasic patients may regress to earlier levels of language behavior. These earlier levels have been likened to the communicative abilities of children. Although a variety of methods of assessing language abilities exist, this information is confined either to the description of adult language ability or to children's language ability but not to both. The present study, therefore, was designed:
1. to investigate the relationships between overall ability …
A Micropuncture Study Of Electrolyte And Water Secretion By The Rabbit Pancreas, Carlton Ruda Caflisch
A Micropuncture Study Of Electrolyte And Water Secretion By The Rabbit Pancreas, Carlton Ruda Caflisch
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Ever since the first demonstration that the concentration of bicarbonate ion in mammalian pancreatic juice increased and chloride ion concentration decreased with increased secretory rate (Gamble and McIver 1928), investigators have tried to determine what process or processes account for these observations. Because the pancreas has a definite anatomical organization, there is the potential for modification of a primary secretion as fluid flows through the duct system. Three model systems have been suggested for the composition of the final secretion: 1) Anion exchange; 2) Admixture; and 3) Unicellular. Studies have been conducted to test the validity of these model systems …
Mastectomies And Their Effect On Sexual Behavior, Irene Marian Ellicott
Mastectomies And Their Effect On Sexual Behavior, Irene Marian Ellicott
Dissertations and Theses
Sixteen women who had had hysterectomies and eighteen women who had had mastectomies were mailed the Oregon Sex Inventory to see if any significant differences in sexual behavior occurred before or after surgery.
The mastectomy group showed a greater degree of change in their sexual behavior than the hysterectomy group. The mastectomy group reported a decrease in the importance of the breast during the sexual act after surgery and a decrease in their desire for intercourse after surgery. The hysterectomy group reported lowered sexual satisfaction after surgery.
The changes reported in this study although relatively small are statistically significant. The …

Processing Demands During Auditory Learning Under Degraded Listening Conditions, David Wayne Downs
Processing Demands During Auditory Learning Under Degraded Listening Conditions, David Wayne Downs
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Recent research has demonstrated that auditory learning can be adversely affected when performed under degraded listening conditions. Perhaps the most common of these degraded listening conditions are environments of moderate intensity noise, such as found in the classroom or in the home. A second degraded listening condition occurs when the speech signal is heard at a reduced intensity. This situation is experienced by the hearing impaired individual. That reduced speech intensity and/or noise can have detrimental effects upon learning has been almost exclusively attributed, by audiologists, to impaired signal intelligibility. The present study (which controlled for high speech intelligibility) investigated …

Post-Ischemic Vagal Stabilization Of The Canine Ventricle, Edward Joseph Hoskins
Post-Ischemic Vagal Stabilization Of The Canine Ventricle, Edward Joseph Hoskins
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Recent work has demonstrated that vagus nerve stimulation increases the ventricular fibrillation threshold (VFT) of the ischemic canine ventricle. This project was undertaken to show a direct, vagally-mediated, electrical effect giving a mechanism for the increase in VFT. Barbiturate-anesthetized adult mongrel dogs were prepared using a left thoracotomy in the 5th interspace. The heart was suspended in a pericardial cradle and a distal branch of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) was dissected free with a removeable silk or dacron ligature placed around it. Bipolar surface electrodes were sutured to the surface of the left ventricle within and without …
Stressor Effects Of High Relative Humidity And A High Moisture Diet On Appearance Of Disease From Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus In Larvae Of Porthetria Dispar (L.), Pauline Thomas
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
High relative humidity (R.H.) and a high moisture diet were tested as stressors in the incidence of nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) disease of larvae of Porthetria dispar (L.). Relative humidity was shown to have no effect on the appearance of NPV disease in larvae reared in the laboratory. However, a high mortality from other causes was sustained by a group of larvae subjected to both high R.H. and a high moisture diet. The absence of NPV disease during the first larval instar period confirmed earlier findings that effective egg sanitization virtually eliminates NPV disease. This supports current disfavor with the …

Bioenergy And Emotions, Vickie C. Walter
Bioenergy And Emotions, Vickie C. Walter
Theses
This thesis explores the concept of bioenergy as an integral force underlying both human physiology and emotional experience. Drawing on a wide range of historical, cultural, and scientific perspectives, the work examines how different traditions and researchers have conceptualized and attempted to measure or influence this subtle energy. The discussion begins with Wilhelm Reich’s notion of “orgone energy,” a vital force he linked to psychological health and emotional regulation. Reich’s controversial theories and experimental devices are considered in the broader context of psychoanalysis and somatic therapy.
The study then traces parallels between Reich’s work and ancient energy systems such as …
