Exploring Health Equity With Culturally Specific Providers Of Permanent Supportive Housing, Judith Solomon
Exploring Health Equity With Culturally Specific Providers Of Permanent Supportive Housing, Judith Solomon
University Honors Theses
Chronic homelessness is an important public health issue. Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is a promising opportunity for transitioning people experiencing homelessness into housing, however there remain unaddressed racial inequities in service provision and outcomes. The aim of this study is to better understand the role of culturally specific (CS) providers of PSH in improving health equity. I analyzed interviews with CS PSH providers for themes related to health and healthcare. Providers spoke about the importance of connecting clients to healthcare. Providers stressed the importance of honesty and lived experience, highlighting the strong sense of responsibility to the community. Providers also …

The last two decades have proffered many remarkable choices in managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Leading the list are glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1RAs), the first of which, exenatide, was approved by the FDA in 2005. Two other major classes of drugs have also entered the market: dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, commonly known as gliptins and approved in 2006, and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, with the first approval occurring in 2013. These drugs have revolutionized the treatment of diabetes. Additionally, on the horizon, the once-weekly basal insulin analog insulin icodec and the once-weekly combination of insulin icodec …
Strategies To Improve Antibody-Mediated Protection Against Herpes Simplex Virus Infections, Matthew D. Slein
Strategies To Improve Antibody-Mediated Protection Against Herpes Simplex Virus Infections, Matthew D. Slein
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
No efficacious vaccine exists for herpes simplex virus and the global burden of disease remains high. Antibodies can serve as potent therapeutics to protect high risk populations such as neonates. Although rare, neonatal HSV (nHSV) infections can result in significant mortality and lifelong neurological morbidity even with antiviral therapy. While HSV-specific maternally derived antibodies significantly reduce the risk of neonatal disease in humans, the mechanisms by which they mediate protection have yet to be described. Using a mouse model of neonatal HSV (nHSV) infections we aimed to determine the mechanisms of antibody-mediated protection using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting two of …

In Case I Make It: An Autoethnographic Argument For Care, Space, And Utopia, Faelyn T. Cowan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Taking an autoethnographic and autotheoretical approach I examine within this project TomboloBooks’ Queer Comic Book Club. Drawing from José Esteban Mun֮oz’s ideas of queer utopia and Jen Jack Gieseking’s framework of constellations, and analyzing my own experiences, I present the Queer Comic Book Club (QCBC) as a moment of utopic queer worldmaking and argue for it’s potential as a site of alternative mental health care. Though I cannot provide here a generalizable model of book clubs as care, what I offer here is a series of possibilities, arguing for the potential of these spaces as community resources and sites of …

OBJECTIVES: Severe hypoglycemia is more common among young children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) than older youth, and parents report significant hypoglycemia fear (HF). Parents experiencing HF describe constant and extreme worry about the occurrence of hypoglycemia and may engage in potentially risky behaviors to avoid hypoglycemia. Our team developed and tested a behavioral intervention, Reducing Emotional Distress for Childhood Hypoglycemia in Parents (REDCHiP), to decrease HF in parents of young children with T1DM. Here, we qualitatively analyzed parent feedback to refine and optimize future intervention iterations.
METHODS: The randomized pilot study included parents (n = 73) of …

In the developing mammalian heart, the endocardium and the myocardium are separated by so-called cardiac jelly. Communication between the endocardium and the myocardium is essential for cardiac morphogenesis. How membrane-localized receptors and ligands achieve interaction across the cardiac jelly is not understood. Working in developing mouse cardiac morphogenesis models, we used a variety of cellular, imaging, and genetic approaches to elucidate this question. We found that myocardium and endocardium interacted directly through microstructures termed tunneling nanotube-like structures (TNTLs). TNTLs extended from cardiomyocytes (CMs) to contact endocardial cells (ECs) directly. TNTLs transported cytoplasmic proteins, transduced signals between CMs and ECs, and …

BACKGROUND: Many patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) are young and highly active but often become limited by activity-induced pain. Characterizing how the abnormal bony geometry of DDH affects hip joint loading and multiplanar kinematics during sport-specific motions relevant to active patients may provide insight into injury mechanisms and inform optimal treatment options.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine how hip joint loading and kinematics are altered in DDH during 2 common sport activities: running and multidirectional hop-cutting. It was hypothesized that superior and medial joint-reaction forces (JRFs) would be elevated during running and that …

Tetracyclines (TCs) are an important class of antibiotics threatened by enzymatic inactivation. These tetracycline-inactivating enzymes, also known as tetracycline destructases (TDases), are a subfamily of class A flavin monooxygenases (FMOs) that catalyze hydroxyl group transfer and oxygen insertion (Baeyer-Villiger type) reactions on TC substrate scaffolds. Semisynthetic modification of TCs (e.g., tigecycline, omadacycline, eravacycline, and sarecycline) has proven effective in evading certain resistance mechanisms, such as ribosomal protection and efflux, but does not protect against TDase-mediated resistance. Here, we report the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a new series of 22 semisynthetic TDase inhibitors that explore D-ring substitution of anhydrotetracycline (aTC) …

Natural killer (NK) cells recognize target cells through germline-encoded activation and inhibitory receptors enabling effective immunity against viruses and cancer. The Ly49 receptor family in the mouse and killer immunoglobin-like receptor family in humans play a central role in NK cell immunity through recognition of major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) and related molecules. Functionally, these receptor families are involved in the licensing and rejection of MHC-I-deficient cells through missing-self. The Ly49 family is highly polymorphic, making it challenging to detail the contributions of individual Ly49 receptors to NK cell function. Herein, we showed mice lacking expression of all Ly49s …

Medial column beaming is a surgical procedure that involves inserting a metallic beam to the medial column of the foot to treat the Charcot deformity of the foot.
A surgeon will use a large diameter screw to insert a beam into medial column which includes the first metatarsal, medial cuneiform, navicular and talus (fig 3) The beam shares the load of weightbearing with the foot's ligaments and joints, reducing the abnormal loss of structural integrity that can occur in Charcot arthropathy of the foot.
Subtalar joint fusion is often performed concurrently with medial column beaming to enhance the overall stability …

Understanding The Coping Mechanisms Used By Older Formerly Incarcerated Persons During Reentry, Sayla Victores
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current study investigated the coping mechanisms employed by older formerly incarcerated individuals during reentry. While there is research on the reentry experiences of older formerly incarcerated individuals, less is known about how they cope with the strains of reentry. As such, this study fills this gap in the literature by exploring both adaptive and maladaptive coping mechanisms employed by this population during reentry. Using in-depth interviews with 20 older, formerly incarcerated individuals, I found that older formerly incarcerated persons experienced challenges related to securing stable housing, finding employment and economic security, community supervision, stigma and judgment, and overall reintegration. …
