An Evaluation For Modification (Shorter) Of The Kirby-Bauer Susceptibility Test, Walter Norris Jr.
An Evaluation For Modification (Shorter) Of The Kirby-Bauer Susceptibility Test, Walter Norris Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Kirby-Bauer test for determining antibiotic effectiveness is widely used in laboratories. The 10 to 20 hour incubation time needed to obtain useful results is a disadvantage of that test. This experimental research was developed to test a modification which could provide useful results in 5 hours.
The modification employed in this experimental technique used an increased inoculum at a 1.0 McFarland standard instead of the customary 0.5 standard. The 2 to 5 hour incubation period in the trypticase soy broth was deleted. The Mueller Hinton plates were incubated for 5 hours and then observed for resistant and/or sensitive patterns. …

Enuresis: A Case Study, Elaine Lee Phillips
Enuresis: A Case Study, Elaine Lee Phillips
Masters Theses
A 15-year-old male with a history of high rates of nocturnal enuresis was trained using the method of Azrin and Thienes (1978) and Azrin, Thienes, Hontos, and Besatel (1979). The method consisted of a 1 and 1/2-hour in-office training of the child and parents. The parents then conducted an intensive training day and subsequent procedures in the home. The procedures included reinforcement for increased urine retention and dryness, training for increased alertness to bladder cues and sensations of dryness, an over-correction procedure for wetness, and behavior rehearsals of correct toileting sequences. Using this method, the child ceased bedwetting. The Azrin …

Hair As An Indicator Of Excessive Aluminum Exposure, Robert A. Yokel
Hair As An Indicator Of Excessive Aluminum Exposure, Robert A. Yokel
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
To determine if excessive systemic exposure to aluminum would be reflected in increased aluminum concentration in hair, rabbits were given a series of aluminum lactate injections. Hair was collected before the aluminum lactate administration from the site of injections and twice after the injections from this site as well as from an area adjoining the injection site. Aluminum was determined by flameless atomic absorption analysis of acid-digested samples. The concentration of aluminum in the hair increased after the injections in samples taken at both times from both sites. Considerable variability in hair aluminum was found before excessive exposure, as has …

Masters Theses
Progressive muscle relaxation was assessed as a method, for controlling "blood pressure under stressful and nonstressful conditions using a multiple Baseline across subjects design* Three borderline hypertensive subjects were trained in two experimental conditions, progressive muscle relaxation under resting conditions (PMR) and progressive muscle relaxation while performing time-limited tasks known to produce temporary increments in blood pressure (PMR + Math). Generalization of training effects to nontraining conditions was assess ed in post-training, task only, sessions and in the home environment. Measures of changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as frontalis EMG were recorded once per minute for …
A Comparison Of Personality Self-Descriptions Using A Structured Personality Inventory And Open-Ended Personality Questionnaire And Critical Incident Survey, Birda Lee Walker
A Comparison Of Personality Self-Descriptions Using A Structured Personality Inventory And Open-Ended Personality Questionnaire And Critical Incident Survey, Birda Lee Walker
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to determine whether individuals presented with a well defined list of adjectives demonstrate suggestibility, i.e., would rate themselves differently on the Adjective Check List (ACL), versus the open-ended test such as the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire (CAQ) or Critical Incident Survey (CIS).
The participants in this study were 36 adult volunteers drawn from three different populations: 12 prison inmates, 12 undergraduates from a university, and 12 outpatients of a mental health clinic. The participants were administered the three tests in individual and group sessions.
The prisoners did not fake “bad" or "good" more so on …
Training Self-Control In Food Selection Through Verbal Self-Instruction, Thomas Vincent O'Melia
Training Self-Control In Food Selection Through Verbal Self-Instruction, Thomas Vincent O'Melia
Masters Theses
This project was designed to teach children self-control through verbal self-instruction and self-reinforcement procedures prior to snack time in order to determine if they would learn to choose more nutritious foods during that period. Food facts and related health information were taught by the use of fictitious stories. In the experimental classroom the children heard stories, approximately 3 to 5 minutes long, that emphasized food facts and related health effects. After the stories, the children were allowed to go to a snack bar to select from "good and bad" foods. A set of questions and information was rehearsed prior to …
Effects Of The Serotonin Depletor Parachlorophenylalanine Upon Shock-Induced Aggression And Pressing Responses In Rats, Robert G. Sewell
Effects Of The Serotonin Depletor Parachlorophenylalanine Upon Shock-Induced Aggression And Pressing Responses In Rats, Robert G. Sewell
Masters Theses
The literature concerning the effects of d, l-parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA) upon shock-induced aggression (SIA) is reviewed and found to be inconsistent. PCPA, a known serotonin depletor, has behavioral effects in a variety of other procedures which collectively suggest that PCPA should produce SIA enhancement. The present study was designed to analyze PCPA (300 mg/kg) effects upon SIA in rats restrained spatially close to an inanimate target and panel operandum. The results showed marked increases in both aggressive biting and panel pressing for several days following each PCPA treatment for each subject tested. These data were interpreted to indicate that serotonin depletion …

The average time period of the post-treatment evaluation period was 5.7 years after the end of active therapy. The patients' ages ranged from 8.4 to 13.3 years at the beginning of activator treatment.
In the correction of the Class II malocclusion, no other form of orthopedic mechanics were utilized in this sample. In some cases full banding was used to align and level the arches prior to the activator therapy. …
Evaluating The Aural/Oral Skills Of Children Identified By The Slingerland Pre-Reading Screening Procedures, Sandra L. Singleton
Evaluating The Aural/Oral Skills Of Children Identified By The Slingerland Pre-Reading Screening Procedures, Sandra L. Singleton
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Research tends to confirm the concept that it is imperative to diagnose learning disorders early and start remediation immediately. Slingerland (1977) developed an assessment tool, which reportedly aids in the identification of remediational needs before a child has experienced failure. This screening device was designed to "show modality weaknesses that call for specific instruction to prevent early failare" (Slingerland, 1977). All of the subtests from the Pre-Reading Screening Procedures are cross-modality tasks because the testing of a modality, "Auditory" or "Visual", requires the use of one or two other modalities (motor or speech) to generate a response. In order to …

Measuring Interpersonal Dependency In Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients, Susan D. Schaffer
Measuring Interpersonal Dependency In Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients, Susan D. Schaffer
Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations
The successful inpatient treatment of emotionally troubled adolescents must facilitate their achievement of developmentally appropriate independence while minimizing the maladaptive dependency that can be fostered by the hospitalization experience. Levels of interpersonal dependency were measured in seven adolescent psychiatric inpatients over a ninety day period. The Interpersonal Dependency Inventory by Hirschfeld, Klerman, Gough, Barrett, Korchin, & Chodoff was utilized. The individual therapist of each participant independently assessed the participant's response to hospitalization at forty-five and ninety days using a five point Leikert type scale. The study demonstrated no significant changes in dependency levels at forty-five and ninety days. The therapist's …

Sclerosis-Associated Follicular Center Cell Lymphoma In The Retroperitoneum : The First Clinicopathologicla Study Of A Frequently Encountered Subtype Of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Michael Ethan Katz
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Follicular center cell lymphoma with sclerosis is a significant clinicopathologic entity which has received little attention to date. Its uniqueness has been obscured by quarrels over classification of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas; and by the reluctance of some to accept it as a bona fide pathologic subtype in the retroperitoneum, its most common site of presentation. This thesis examines the clinical and pathological findings in a series of 22 cases of retroperitoneal follicular center cell lymphoma with sclerosis obtained from the hematopathology files of Yale-New Haven Hospital. Background material on the immunobiology, classification, and staging of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas is provided; and …
