Empowering Staff Wellbeing: A Team-Based Qi Initiative, Rebecca Lauren Smith, Elizabeth Morse, David Phillippi

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Project Title: Empowering Staff Wellbeing: A Team-Based QI Initiative

Keywords: Burnout, wellbeing, DNP, primary care, QI methodology

Background and Rationale: The consequences of burnout in healthcare are alarming: worse patient outcomes, lack of continuity of care, higher turnover, and increased cost to employers. Many studies of burnout and wellbeing of clinicians focus on larger institutions such as hospitals and Federally Qualified Health Centers. Over the past several years, burnout has been discussed among our small, eight-person clinician team working in a small, non-profit primary care clinic. Yet, there has been no formal assessment of the level of burnout among …

Sports For Gender Equality, Michelle Salmeron, Julia Mott, Eliza Cash Apr 2025

Sports For Gender Equality, Michelle Salmeron, Julia Mott, Eliza Cash

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Recent studies show that participating in sports leads to lower levels of anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity in children while also fostering higher self-esteem (Tahira, 2023). In Mexico, 67% of girls are inactive (Provoking Sport, 2023). However, there has been little direct research conducted in Mexico to illustrate and exemplify the benefits of sports for girls and women. Additionally, there are few role models for them to look up to who share their cultural background, as most examples come from other countries. This creates a cycle that hinders cultural and societal growth, as well as creates a barrier to sports participation. …

The Brca1/Brca2 Test: A Swiss And American Analysis Of The Effective Facilitation Of Genetic Healthcare Equity For Breast Cancer Prevention, Elizabeth Cahill Apr 2025

The Brca1/Brca2 Test: A Swiss And American Analysis Of The Effective Facilitation Of Genetic Healthcare Equity For Breast Cancer Prevention, Elizabeth Cahill

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

This paper investigates the accessibility and equity of BRCA1/BRCA2 genetic testing in Switzerland and the United States—two high-income nations with vastly different healthcare models. While genetic testing for breast cancer prevention has the potential to save lives through early detection and targeted interventions, access to such services remains uneven. This study uses a comparative approach to analyze how healthcare systems, insurance structures, psychological barriers, genetic literacy, and the vocational mobility of genetic counseling shape the extent to which individuals can access BRCA testing. Primary data were collected through expert interviews with a Swiss health economist and a French genetic counselor …

Switzerland’S Approach To Combating Addiction To Opiates, And Its Application To The United States Framework, Vittoria Volpi Apr 2025

Switzerland’S Approach To Combating Addiction To Opiates, And Its Application To The United States Framework, Vittoria Volpi

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

The opioid epidemic remains a pressing global public health challenge, with a hypothesized 1.2 million opioid-related fatalities in the United States alone, by 2029 (Rao et al., 2021). In the United States, the epidemic was driven by the overprescription of opioid pain medications in the 1990s. In contrast, in Switzerland, the opioid crisis stemmed from heroin imports and open-air drug scenes in the late 20th century. This research project analyzes Switzerland's national response to opioid abuse—specifically its Four Pillar Approach—and evaluates its potential applicability within the context of the United States. Using a qualitative research design, the study draws on …

Building Resilient Vaccine Cold Chains In Sub-Saharan Africa, Maya Tilley Apr 2025

Building Resilient Vaccine Cold Chains In Sub-Saharan Africa, Maya Tilley

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

The world has made great strides in public health in the past century, with the introduction of vaccines revolutionizing preventative care. Continued research and development has allowed for increased vaccine roll-out, but with a growing number of people to vaccinate, immunization supply chains have struggled to keep up. The cold chain–the systems of refrigeration that keep vaccines cool–is a key facet of the global immunization supply chain. Most vaccines require storage between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, throughout their whole journey from manufacture to the last-mile. Insufficient cold chain management and technology has led to considerable vaccine wastage, while many …

Standardizing Social Determinants Of Health Factors From Heterogeneous Sources To Improve Data Fairness, Yifang Dang Apr 2025

Standardizing Social Determinants Of Health Factors From Heterogeneous Sources To Improve Data Fairness, Yifang Dang

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) significantly influence health outcomes, yet their representation in computational models remains fragmented. This dissertation addresses this gap by constructing an SDoH ontology (SDoHO), leveraging it to improve large language model (LLM) performance, and using LLMs to extract new knowledge and enrich the ontology. The overarching goal is to establish a feedback loop where ontology development enhances LLM-based extraction, and LLM-derived insights refine and expand the ontology. The methodology is structured across three aims: (1) ontology construction, (2) ontology-assisted LLM enhancement, and (3) LLM-driven ontology enrichment, with a focus on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD). …

Existencia Y Percepciones De Intercambio Cultural Entre Medicina Mapuche Y Medicina Tradicional China En Araucanía, Chile: Práctica Y Recepción De Cuidado, Bowei Li

Chile: Public Health, Traditional Medicine, and Community Empowerment

Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, has been documented in Chile since the late 19th century, and since 2006, acupuncture has been formally integrated into the Chilean Ministry of Health (MINSAL) as an “auxiliary” medicine. In spite of the proliferating practice of MTC within Chile, however, very little is known about the state of such practices within the south of Chile, in regions such as La Araucania. Representations of Eastern medicine, such as the advertising of the well-known Chilean tablet Oblea China, show a fascination with traditional Chinese medical practices in relation to the fortitude and health of indigenous peoples of …

Posters

Introduction: Pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) affects 1 in 37 young children and is associated with heightened stress and anxiety among caregivers. Currently, there are no established interventions that target PFD caregiver stress, and traditional models of adult mental healthcare face feasibility issues in pediatric care settings. To address this gap, we developed a brief acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) intervention (Clinical Trials #NCT06001398). We assessed caregiver-perceived acceptability to inform future efficacy testing. Method: Twenty caregivers participated in a NIMH-funded pilot study of a 2-session ACT intervention for parents of children with PFD. Caregivers with children aged 2 to 6 years …

Computer-Aided Integrated Rehabilitation For Post-Stroke Patients Using Deep Learning Techniques, Kaichen Tang

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, often requiring intensive rehabilitation and frequent clinical assessments such as the Fugl-Meyer Assessment. However, traditional in-person evaluations are resource-heavy and difficult to scale, limiting access for many patients. Additionally, monitoring vital signs like blood pressure and oxygen saturation typically depends on specialized equipment, leading to fragmented care and incomplete recovery insights. Even when assessments and monitoring are available, patients often struggle to maintain high-quality, intensive exercise routines without supervision, further limiting rehabilitation outcomes.

To address these challenges, this dissertation proposes an AI-driven, smartphone-based framework that integrates automated motor function assessment, non-invasive vital …

Traumatic Brain Injury Prevention Through Helmet Safety Education For Parents And Free Helmets For Elementary-Aged School Children, Kelli E. Camp Apr 2025

Traumatic Brain Injury Prevention Through Helmet Safety Education For Parents And Free Helmets For Elementary-Aged School Children, Kelli E. Camp

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Problem Description: Head injuries from bicycle accidents are a leading cause of emergency visits among elementary-aged children, particularly in rural areas (Safe Kids Worldwide, 2017). Helmets significantly reduce traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) up to 88% (Field Neurosciences Institute, n.d.). However, low-income families, especially in rural areas, often lack access to helmets and safety education, resulting in lower helmet use and higher injury rates. These challenges are amplified in communities facing high traffic injury rates, limited access to safety resources, and economic constraints (Gilna et al., 2022; World Health Organization, 2023).

Setting: This project took place in Othello, WA (pop. 8,915), …
