A Case Report Of Vitreopapillary Traction Mistaken For Optic Disc Edema, Breyne Middleton Od, Drew Anderson Od
A Case Report Of Vitreopapillary Traction Mistaken For Optic Disc Edema, Breyne Middleton Od, Drew Anderson Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Traction of the optic disc occurs during incomplete detachment of the posterior vitreous from the peripapillary glial tissue. It can sometimes cause the appearance of disc edema and bilateral cases can be confused with papilledema or cause patients to be worked up for pseudotumor cerebri.
Case Report: A patient presented with an outside diagnosis of unilateral optic disc edema and was found in fact to have vitreopapillary traction.
Conclusion: Costly, ultimately unnecessary testing such as magnetic resonance imaging can be sometimes avoided if vitreopapillary traction is considered as a differential for disc edema. It can be easily identified with …

A Space-Occupying Lesion Manifesting As Unilateral Optic Disc Edema, Len V. Koh Od, Phd, Anna Wells Od, Lindsay Jansen Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Primary and secondary orbital diseases can arise from different tissues in the periorbital regions as space-occupying lesion leading to ophthalmic symptoms. Therefore, eye care providers are often the first encounter for these patients.
Case report: A 54-year-old Caucasian male presented as a new patient at the eye clinic with an incidental finding of edema of the left optic disc. After a thorough optometric evaluation, a referral was made to a local ear-nose-throat (ENT) specialist who confirmed a diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma by further neuroimaging. Surgical removal eventuated in resolution of disc edema with restoration of vision.
Conclusion: An insidious …

Social Health Among Adolescents In The Global School-Based Student Health Survey (Gshs), Luke Pontoriero, Sarah Simon, Lauren Anderson
Social Health Among Adolescents In The Global School-Based Student Health Survey (Gshs), Luke Pontoriero, Sarah Simon, Lauren Anderson
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Background: Social health is a function of the quantity and quality of relationships, including with family members and peers. Adolescents who report being lonely or having no close friends have a low quantity of relationships, and those who feel that their peers are unkind and their parents are not understanding have low quality relationships. We examined whether poor social health is associated with violent behavior.
Methods: We analyzed data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), which employs a standardized two-stage cluster sampling method and a validated questionnaire to explore health and risk behaviors among nationally representative samples of …

Closing The Gap: Preschool Quality Affect On Language Acquisition Across Socioeconomic Statuses, Abby E. Hannnon Ms, Kaitlyn Clark Ms, Olivia Lewis Ms, Catherine L. Cotton Ms
Undergraduate Research Conference
Language acquisition is impacted greatly in the early years of life by many contributing factors. Children begin to have the conscious ability to acquire, learn, and develop language in exponential capacities around the age of 3-4 years old. These years are vital for the future of individuals' speech and communication. Preschool education is the beginning building blocks that lead to K-12 language learning and development. Socioeconomic statuses differ across all preschool aged children’s homes, consequently affecting the language heard and learned in the household. Our goal is to examine whether the quality of preschool education reduces the language acquisition gap …

Does Awareness Of Behavioral Challenges Impact The Preparedness Of Recent Slp Graduate Students For Their Professional Practice?, Madison K. Jones, Catherine L. Cotton Dr.
Undergraduate Research Conference
This research aims to explore how awareness of behavioral challenges, such as aggression, defiance, and hyperactivity, affects the preparedness of recent Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) graduates. With over 84% of children receiving SLP services also facing emotional or behavioral difficulties, it is crucial to examine whether new SLPs feel prepared to manage these challenges. The study seeks to assess whether increased awareness of behavioral issues correlates with greater confidence and readiness in addressing them during the first year of clinical practice. The study will involve administering a survey to first-year Speech-Language Pathologists. The survey will focus on their preparedness and their …

Dietary nitrate supplementation has been reported to enhance explosive-type movements, but our understanding of the ergogenic potential of nitrate in resistance exercise and women is understudied. PURPOSE: To investigate if dietary nitrate, provided as nitrate-rich beetroot juice (BR), improved resistance exercise performance compared to nitrate-depleted beetroot juice (PL) in resistance-trained women. METHODS: Eighteen resistance-trained women were assigned in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design to consume PL (0.10 mmol nitrate) and BR (6 mmol of nitrate) 2.5 h prior to performing barbell back squats and bench press at 55% one-repetition max (1RM), 60%1RM, and 65%1RM. Power and velocity were measured via …

Difference Or Disorder? Misidentification Of Speech And Language Disorders In Mississippi’S Public Schools, Lori Leachman, Catherine Cotton Dr.
Undergraduate Research Conference
Students who are misdiagnosed with speech and language disorders often miss out on necessary class time and can fall behind their peers. In order to decrease the prevalence of misdiagnoses due to dialectal and linguistic differences, we must first understand how SLPs currently differentiate between typical and disordered speech. In this study, information will be gathered on the current abilities of Mississippi public school SLPs to identify the difference between a speaker that is linguistically diverse and a speaker with disordered speech or language. SLPs will listen to AI generated speech samples–some disordered, some typical, but with non-mainstream dialects–and be …

Title: Natal And Neonatal Teeth In Mississippi Newborns
Submission Type: Semester Long Research/ Oral Presentation
Abstract: In recent years, we have seen a growth in Mississippi infants being born with or growing teeth at an earlier stage. This may be caused by several things, like gestational age, maternal age, or possibly the mother’s diet. We are now looking for common similarities between these infants to see what the possible cause may be. Although this may not seem detrimental, this is still very harmful for infants, causing diseases like Riga Fede Disease. This is a disease that is caused by mandibular …

ONU Student Research Colloquium
Fear-related disorders are often treated with exposure therapy, a technique based on the concept of extinction. However, this type of therapy is ineffective for many individuals, so finding a pharmacological adjunct that augments the extinction of fear could lead to better treatment outcomes. In recent preclinical work, investigators have shown that psychedelics can accelerate the extinction of fear, potentially through their impact on neurotrophic signaling. We previously found that psilocybin exerted sex-dependent effects on the extinction of conditioned fear to an isolated cue (i.e., a tone). Specifically, psilocybin enhanced the extinction of cue fear in male rats but impaired it …

Use Of Visual Cues In Pacu Pca Pumps On Increasing Patient Satisfaction Of Pain Management, Rebecca Willier
Use Of Visual Cues In Pacu Pca Pumps On Increasing Patient Satisfaction Of Pain Management, Rebecca Willier
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Abstract
Problem: Effective pain management in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is crucial for patient recovery and satisfaction. Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps are commonly used to manage post-surgical pain, allowing patients to self-administer analgesics within prescribed limits. However, confusion about dosing intervals and uncertainty about when the next dose can be administered may lead to anxiety and dissatisfaction among patients. Previous research suggests visual cues can enhance user experience and confidence in medical device use.
Aim: This study aims to investigate whether the addition of visual cues on PCA pumps improves patient satisfaction with pain management compared to standard PCA …

Cognitive Function And Cardio-Pulmonary Responses Following One Night Sleep Deprivation Among College-Age Students, Jacob S. Kreger, Andrew Schroeder, Michael Ranney
ONU Student Research Colloquium
The relationship between sleep and quality of life has been extensively studied. Previous research suggests that even one night of sleep deprivation negatively impacts cognitive ability and stress levels. In this study, physiological stress markers—heart rate (bpm), blood pressure (systolic, diastolic, mean arterial pressure), respiratory rate (rpm), and oxygen saturation (%)—were measured while participants rested. Cognitive function was assessed using the Stroop color test. Twenty five healthy college students (ages 18-23, male and female) were grouped based on sleep duration (0-4, 4-6, and 7-9 hours), each group consisting of male and females. It was hypothesized that shorter sleep durations would …

Evidence-Based Practice Consideration For Perioperative Use Of Mepivacaine In Total Knee Arthroplasty, Courtney E. Haley
Evidence-Based Practice Consideration For Perioperative Use Of Mepivacaine In Total Knee Arthroplasty, Courtney E. Haley
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is becoming increasingly prevalent, with projections of a significant rise in cases by 2050. Optimal perioperative management is essential for enhancing postoperative recovery, minimizing complications, and supporting early discharge. Spinal anesthesia, particularly with long-acting agents like bupivacaine, is commonly used; however, it may lead to prolonged motor blockade and postoperative urinary retention (POUR), impacting recovery. Recent research suggests that mepivacaine, an intermediate-acting spinal anesthetic, may offer improved recovery outcomes for TKA patients compared to bupivacaine. This evidence-based practice project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of mepivacaine in reducing neurologic recovery time, POUR, and length of stay …
