The purpose of this MUSC Occupational Therapy (OT) Doctoral Capstone project was to determine if stroke survivors demonstrate participation gains resulting from Rasch-derived, patient-spectice practice, i.e., “keyform mapping,” program by evaluation participation at 3 levels. Approximately 50% of stroke survivors have participation restrictions that may impact their engagement with fulfilling, meaningful activities. This is a secondary analysis of data collected from a stroke rehabilitation RCT parent study which tested the effect of a tailored. task-practice program using Rasch-derived keyform map of the individual’s FMA-UE item responses. Like Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, transitions, and endings, spreading depolarizations (SDs) can be depicted with two faces: one looking backward, waving a symbolic farewell to the end of a cortical seizure; the other forward looking, opening a darker door for a fatal wave in the brainstem that ends life. There is good agreement on the distinct electrical nature of both events, but neither role is yet proven in patients. The physiological and clinical importance of motile cilia in reproduction is well recognized; however, the specific role they play in transport through the oviduct and how ciliopathies lead to subfertility and infertility are still unclear. The contribution of cilia beating, fluid flow, and smooth muscle contraction to overall progressive transport within the oviduct remains under debate. In 2024, the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) leveraged the Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) to support the development and training of Alabama’s public health workforce. Technical assistance was provided by the Region IV Public Health Training Center evaluation team to conduct ADPH’S Workforce Training Needs Assessment.

Purpose. The purpose of this Research Brief is to report key findings from this needs assessment and discuss implications for public health practice in the Deep South.

Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics have been shown to enhance treatment adherence and outcomes in individuals with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder. In recent years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several LAIs with differing amenities of care, such as mode of administration, duration of oral medication supplementation, dosing frequency, needle gauge and size, and injection volume, amongst others. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is a promising non-invasive method to improve motor function in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) by enhancing spinal reflex pathways. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different tSCS electrode placement montages and targeted spinal levels on neurophysiological responses such as spinally evoked motor responses (sEMRs), dorsal root reflex activation, and muscle recruitment in individuals with SCI and healthy controls to optimize stimulation strategies for motor recovery. Practice Problem: Incidences of increasing maternal morbidity and mortality are often preceded by a period of unrecognized deterioration. The lack of an obstetric early warning system in a high-risk Level IV Maternal Care Facility further contributed to delayed identification and intervention of deteriorating mothers.

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health crisis, disproportionately affecting individuals identifying as women, with lifelong physical and psychological consequences. Despite recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) for routine IPV screening, many primary care settings lack standardized tools to perform this screening. The Modern Woman Health and Wellness Center (MWHWC), a women’s only primary care clinic in Connecticut, identified the need for a validated screening tool to increase detection of IPV, improve patient outcomes and align with national screening guidelines.

AIMS: B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and mid-regional pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (MR-proANP) testing are guideline-recommended to aid in the diagnosis of acute heart failure. Nevertheless, the diagnostic performance of these biomarkers is uncertain.

METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a systematic review and individual patient-level data meta-analysis to evaluate the diagnostic performance of BNP and MR-proANP. We subsequently developed and externally validated a decision-support tool called CoDE-HF that combines natriuretic peptide concentrations with clinical variables using machine learning to report the probability of acute heart failure. This case study examined the effects of stroboscopic vision training during an entire varsity softball season for a 16-year-old female. Stroboscopic vision training uses specialized glasses with crystallized fluid that flickers, intermittently impeding vision, a technique that enhances visual performance. The stroboscopic glasses were worn two to three times a week during hitting and fielding skills. Background: Traction of the optic disc occurs during incomplete detachment of the posterior vitreous from the peripapillary glial tissue. It can sometimes cause the appearance of disc edema and bilateral cases can be confused with papilledema or cause patients to be worked up for pseudotumor cerebri.

Case Report: A patient presented with an outside diagnosis of unilateral optic disc edema and was found in fact to have vitreopapillary traction.

Conclusion: Costly, ultimately unnecessary testing such as magnetic resonance imaging can be sometimes avoided if vitreopapillary traction is considered as a differential for disc edema. It can be easily identified with …

Background: Primary and secondary orbital diseases can arise from different tissues in the periorbital regions as space-occupying lesion leading to ophthalmic symptoms. Therefore, eye care providers are often the first encounter for these patients.

Case report: A 54-year-old Caucasian male presented as a new patient at the eye clinic with an incidental finding of edema of the left optic disc. After a thorough optometric evaluation, a referral was made to a local ear-nose-throat (ENT) specialist who confirmed a diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma by further neuroimaging. Surgical removal eventuated in resolution of disc edema with restoration of vision.

Dietary nitrate supplementation has been reported to enhance explosive-type movements, but our understanding of the ergogenic potential of nitrate in resistance exercise and women is understudied. PURPOSE: To investigate if dietary nitrate, provided as nitrate-rich beetroot juice (BR), improved resistance exercise performance compared to nitrate-depleted beetroot juice (PL) in resistance-trained women. METHODS: Eighteen resistance-trained women were assigned in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design to consume PL (0.10 mmol nitrate) and BR (6 mmol of nitrate) 2.5 h prior to performing barbell back squats and bench press at 55% one-repetition max (1RM), 60%1RM, and 65%1RM.
