BACKGROUND: To investigate the pathologic differences in patients with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI).

METHODS: Fifteen children with POMS and eight children with ADEM underwent DTI and DBSI. The comparison of DTI and DBSI diffusivity measures of POMS (31 scans) and ADEM (17 scans) was performed as group comparison and association over time.

RESULTS: In univariate analysis of average measures of DBSI and DTI over time, DBSI fractional anisotropy is lower in POMS than ADEM (P = 0.002), indicative of axonal injury of POMS. Higher …

PURPOSE: Volar locking plate (VLP) of distal radius fractures (DRF) carries a number of surgical risks including flexor pollicis longus (FPL) rupture secondary to irritation from prominent hardware. This study reviews FPL reconstruction (with interposition graft or tendon transfer) after VLP-related rupture.

METHODS: This retrospective case series reports the experience at one tertiary center with FPL reconstruction after DRF. Patients treated between January 1, 2013, and June 12, 2023, were eligible for inclusion. Preoperative radiographs were analyzed for Soong grading and fracture reduction parameters. Our objective was to examine whether scored lung ultrasounds predict hypoxia among a nonhypoxic, ambulatory population of patients with COVID-19.

METHODS: This was a diagnostic case-control study. The AAA protease FtsH associates with HflK/C subunits to form a megadalton-size complex that spans the inner membrane and extends into the periplasm of E. coli. How this bacterial complex and homologous assemblies in eukaryotic organelles recruit, extract, and degrade membrane-embedded substrates is unclear. Following the overproduction of protein components, recent cryo-EM structures showed symmetric HflK/C cages surrounding FtsH in a manner proposed to inhibit the degradation of membrane-embedded substrates. Methods: We performed an evaluation of the VISA-A measurement properties using Rasch Measurement Theory by pooling individual participant data from previously conducted studies (n = 217). CpG island hypermethylation, a hallmark of cancer, exhibits substantial heterogeneity across tumors, presenting both opportunities and challenges for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. While this heterogeneity offers potential for patient stratification to predict clinical outcomes and personalize treatments, it complicates the development of robust biomarkers for early detection. Understanding the mechanisms driving this heterogeneity is essential for advancing biomarker design. Vascular rings represent a heterogeneous set of aberrant great vessel anatomic configurations which can cause respiratory symptoms or dysphagia due to tracheal or oesophageal compression. These symptoms can be subtle and may present at varied ages. More recently, many have been identified in patients without symptoms, including fetal echocardiogram, resulting in a conundrum for practitioners when attempting to determine who will benefit from surgical correction. Here, we provide a review of vascular rings and a guide to the practitioner on when to consider additional imaging or referral. Additionally, we discuss the changing landscape regarding asymptomatic patients and fetal echocardiogram.

OBJECTIVE: To provide a comprehensive overview of the American Urological Association Medical Student Surveys and includes data 2022, 2023, and 2024.

METHODS: Data collected through surveys distributed prior to match day and were distributed to all medical students who submitted a rank list for urology residency. Questions consisted of various topics, including applicant demographics, application metrics, and experiences with preference signals and virtual interviews.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) pose a significant public health concern. Preliminary research suggests benefits of physical activity (PA) for individuals receiving SUD treatment. However, current PA interventions have limitations, particularly regarding PA maintenance, due to motivational issues among people with SUDs. Research question: What are the risk factors for mismatches (involving or not involving biological material) and critical mismatches (CMM; involving biological material) in an assisted reproductive technology laboratory equipped with an electronic witnessing system (EWS)? Design: In total, 73,719 witnessing points were extracted retrospectively from an EWS database, representing 11,210 consecutive treatment cycles performed at Fertility North between January 2016 and July 2023. Results: Overall, 138 (0.19%) mismatches and 16 (0.02%) CMM were identified during the study period. This study aims to describe the risk factors and trends in birth prevalence of septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) and gastroschisis between 1980 and 2023. This descriptive, population-based study of SOD and gastroschisis used Western Australian Register of Developmental Anomalies data from 1980 to 2023. Birth prevalence was calculated using Midwives Notification System data for all births after 20 weeks gestation. Relative risk (RR) for SOD and gastroschisis showed risk by maternal age. Introduction: In the past 2 decades, international student enrollment in tertiary education increased globally, with English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States attracting a significant majority of these students. Many of these international students are attracted to studies in health professions and related sciences, particularly nursing.
